  1. But his house is just behind the Dolman Stand.

  2. Wow, disappointing that people are bringing this stuff up in a discussion honouring the man's death. Of course Mandela co-founded the ANC's military wing, and its fight against the evil regime sometimes resorted to violence. You see this as a bad thing? As someone else alluded to, for Mandela to renounce the violence of the ANC would be akin to the French Resistance rolling over for Hitler. It is no different. In both cases sadly, blood was shed, but good triumphed over bad. And Jerry Dammers got to write one of his catchiest tunes! RIP

  3. Ah righto. Thanks for that. I guess that is better. Less awkward for any not wishing to partake.

  4. Other than people who knew Osborbe at Oxford. The FCS - at the time led by BBC political editor Nick Robinson - DID produce Hang Mandela t-shirts (I've seen them) and Gideon's contemporaries said he had one. He had an interesting time at "varsity"; living with a Colombian prostitute and being keen on the odd gramme of "Nigella". Just imagine the Mail if a Milliband had led a similar youth?!

  5. Yep, unfortunately his ANC party are corrupt to the core and have made many black South Africans poorer than they were under apartheid, even if they are free. Unfortunately I think this can stem back to the acceptance of money from various bad sources which led to many party becoming drunk with the thought of power and money. I don't think Mandela agreed with this but I not sure he ever distanced himself from it, and to my knowledge never criticised his party for the way it was run making his fight for racial equality and rights for Black south Africans a little hollow. Unfortunately his South Africa is now more corrupt, and money grabbing at the highest level, than it ever has been. Brutality towards blacks by the government is just as bad as it has ever been, but is massively over looked. I am all for the good will towards Mandela, but I don't think his legacy will be as great as the ideals he stood for.

  6. Not so sure about that, KC. Remember, Mandela appeared on the popular television programme where you get your garden all spruced up when you're away for the weekend, and it's all a surprise when you come home! Starring Alan Titmarch, a big bloke from Essex, and a ginger bird not wearing a bra. You might have seen it before. Of course, Mandela was "away" for a bit longer than a weekend, but would you believe it (!) they still had a mad rush to get it finished on time. I think Mandela was chuffed that his absence from home was not for nothing. And not a little bit overwhelmed. At the very least, overwhelmed by the ginger bird who forgot to pack everything for the trip....

  8. The only thing that's factually correct in that article is that Mandela was a member of MK and the AIDS statistics at the end. Other than that its a vile, racist rant against 'Africans', labelling them with some bizarre Victorian-concept savagery

  9. No, you're the one changing history. Presumably you also find the actions of the French resistance and various other resistance movements of the 2nd world war unjustifiable too?

  10. I wonder if George Osborne still wears his Hang Mandela t-shirt which he got when he was in the Federation of Conservative Students? My POV on NM is he was one of the few people who enters politics for the right reason. Prevented a civil war, it has to be said.

  12. If you want an idea of how he almost single handidly stopped South Africa falling into civil war post apartheid, read 'Invictus' by John Carlin (turned into a Matt Damon film whose name I can't remember). That is real leadership combined with an ability to forgive and move on I'll never posses. RIP. ps Using Winnie Mandela's actions to criticise him is frankly outrageous and really does show the crass stupidity of the poster. pps Mugabe and Mandela may have had similarities to begin with (both used violence to fight racist dictatorships), but one has ended up a despot and brought his country to its knees, while the other has just died. On a lighter note, can't get Harry Enfield's Nelson Mandela's fighting beer sketch out of my head!

  13. This has got to be the most crass and pathetic post I have ever read on here....and that really is saying something. I hope you wake up and realise what a complete and utter idiot you have made yourself out to be. I don't know whether to feel embarrassed for you or sorry for you.

  16. What rubbish. Mandela would have been released from prison the moment he rejected violence and he refused to do so. He preferred to carry on killing. So are martyrs created
