Happy St Georges Day

Typical of all the local bars.

Wall to wall shit a few weeks back for St Patricks day, but very little today !

Never understood this. We can welcome in our neighbours but can't promote our own day for fear of upsetting someone. Today should be a Bank Holiday, get rid of May Day if we have to.

Happy St George's day one and all

But that isn't the reason St George's Day isn't celebrated, that's just a few isolated incidents ramped up by the right wing press. The reason it isn't celebrated in the same way is because it often falls very close to Easter. Even as a religious 'Saints Day', it's kind of overshadowed by that magic baby dying then coming back to life as the Easter Bunny, or whatever happened . The reason St Paddy's day is celebrated is because a) disparate Irish communities will inevitably have a stronger connection to their heritage because they are isolated from it and b) bars like O'Neills can make money from the stereotype that all Irish people are drunks

I think it'd be great to have more of a celebration of England on St George's day, but we 'll not get a day off because it's too close to Easter and will cost the economy. Even if we did get it off, they'd just take away the May bank holiday weekend. B@st@rds.

Well yes, but I'd like to point out that there are disparate English communities too. They just tend not to bang on about it.

Anyway, there are 4 days of St George related events down my local, so well done the landlord - who's Canadian.

Indeed. I know a couple of guys who live in Singapore who are going to a big St George's BBQ this week. I was referring to its celebration within England though

One of the pubs near me is having a St George's Day English Beer Festival, advertising that they'll be serving discounted Tetley's (owned by Danish firm Carlsberg), Carling (owned by US firm Coors and originally a Canadian lager) and, perhaps most bizarrely, the fake-Belgian lager Stella, produced by the Belgian-Brazilian brewing conglomerate, InBev. At least they're trying

Hmmmm, Tetley's, Carling and Stella. I'll be giving that one a miss!

The breweries should take a lot of the blame - a social club I book entertainment for, was sent in shed loads of nonsense a few weeks back.

When we enquired for items for today, nothing was delivered.

Luckilly we had the same problem last year so had plenty of our own to put up

Happy Annual Let's Talk About Why We Don't Celebrate Saint Georges Day As Much In England As They Do Patron Saints Day Else Where Day.

My three bullet points to add would be:

  • A bit like us compared to sags, we don't measure our identity against any rival nations in the way the Welsh, Jocks and Paddys do

  • Piss 'Ead little Englanders aren't to be encouraged any more than necessary.  Christmas/Bank holidays etc is bad enough for the health/police services etc

  • Break down of community spirit.  Street parties, neighbourhood activities, errr knowing your neighbour's name is fast becoming a thing of the past.  I want to be left the **** alone in my free time, not made to socialise with people who just so happen to be living next door.  Being forced to interact with people at work, calling in on my parents and having to tell my girlfriend to stfu and stop blabbering on about complete bollox for once in her ******* life is bad enough.
