A New Poster - A New Observer

So yesterday was my first account of the new Ashton Gate crop, and as I took my 4 year old daughter I was excited about what potentially could have been an open, exciting game. ( If a challenging evening keeping her entertained).

Some very interesting things that I took from the game:

Mark Little - Either he is incredibly unintelligent or just very lazy. I don't mean this to sound unpleasant or slating, but on numerous occasions he COULD have run down his right wing to create space (especially in the 2nd half), yet didn't. Needs to provide more of an outlet.

Aaron Wilbrahiam - God he was awful, one of the worst performances I have seen in many years! Granted he has played well (from what I have heard) espeically with his 2 goals, however, yesterday he should of been taken off at the 60 minute mark for JET....some may argu that JET is a liability, lazy, languid.....but im sorry, Aaron was poor yesterday, there was NO WAY that JET could of been any worse!!! Not entirely sure what his future holds if SC desn't bring JET on in these circumstances (saying that, I would be VERY suprised if he doesn't start on saturday).

Our defence seems well balanced, Flint was a rock, won everything ala Mccombe (when he was good), where as Ayling was impressive as the ball playing defender breaking from the back, very impressed by both....Williams did the little things well.....slightly concerned that Osborne may be phased out (very impressed with him last season).

Now the major talking point....Frankie Fielding, a liability!!! panic!!! no confidence!!! get rid!!! NO, yes he has the running style of a deranged monk, but he had to put up with some appaling back passes yesterday, not to mention some strong saves and excellent claims.....lets compare this to Ledgzkins....exactly!!! He kicked the ball out of play twice....what do you expect when players are standing on the touchline!!! I was actually very impressed with him....far more than away to Swindon the last occasion I saw him where he looked a serious liability.

Elliott and Smith overrun in the middle....Pack flattered to deceive like he has done throughout his city career.

As a new poster thought I would share my views on what I saw, I am well prepared to be shot down!

I agree largely with what you have said.

I too noticed that about Little and on Saturday too. There are times when we are in possession in the middle of the pitch that he could be more advanced and in a wider position.

Joe Bryan is the same - he seems to 'hold back' a bit aswell.

Defensively I thought we looked really strong. Flint as you said was superb and I like how Ayling can bring the ball out and commit opponents which should in theory free up space for others.

I'm not sure I would agree completely about Wilbraham - I thought he did ok but lacks a little bit of pace. There were times when he'd got the ball down and wanted an extra touch before laying it off and they just took it off his toe. One thing he does do though, which JET wouldn't/doesn't, is close down opposition defenders when they are in possession and he also wins headers in our own box from set pieces.

Fielding I thought had a better game and looked more assured for me than in previous games. He only kicked a couple into touch and most of the time his distribution was pretty good, particularly as you say in light of one or two dodgy back passes.

Overall, i thought it was a solid, strong performance, we just struggled a bit with the final pass and lacked a little bit of creativity in the final third.

You do raise a good point about Wilbrahaim closing the defence down. I wasn't expecting wonders, but was disappointed with his touch and inability to control the ball....looked like a bit of a donkey. However, I appreciate it was prbably an off day....something all players have.

Little?  He's a great signing from what I've seen so far.  I certainly don't see him in the same light as you.

Wilbs is another one I saw very differently from you.  Yes he should have come off earlier, but only because he'd worked himself into the ground for the second match in three days.  Another quality signing.

In fact, all of our signings this summer look like they are good business (at this admittedly early stage).

How did your girl get on?  I'm toying with the idea of taking my little boy down at some point this season (he's 4 next month), but not sure if he's still too young or not.

Harsh on Wilbraham in my opinion, he won a number of flick ons throughout the game yet no one seemed to anticipate it. Baldock seems to always be miles away from him despite apparently having a great partnership with him at MK. Little has been very impressive so far but yesterday he seemed very reluctant to defend, he didn't seem interested in closing down Cox and just let him cut inside at one point

Little was clearly impressive on the box at Sheff Utd, I was just disappointed with him yesterday, a lot of standing around when on the attack, especially in the second half.

She did well, called Vincelot a girl, and told Omozusi to **** off twice. She's getting there.

Seriously though, my mate kept her entertained, no way would she cope if you actually expected her to watch the football.... p.s Ateyo family stand seats are dogshit.

The thing is about reviewing a one off game particularly with a new team  at the start of a long season is that you could come away thinking we are world beaters or destined for another scrap. We are all just getting to know this team.

Get him along before he starts supporting Arsenal! Took my oldest- now 14 at the same age v Tranmere and we won 3-1. He cried every time we scored as the noise terrified him! He loves it now and is a ST holder of course.

To be fair I have to agree about Little Tuesday, again no doubt he was very good against Sheffield Utd, however he had no interest of wanting the ball unless it was passed right to his feet. Elliott had to practically direct him for a pass in the 2nd half to make a run.

About Fielding, its not really praise, more look at the keepers in the division, we've probably got one of the best yet people compare him to a championship keeper standards mostly. Frankie made some good saves and dealt with poor back passes well, yes some dodgy moments but he's a better keeper than most in this division.

Me to he was awful.

A few things to bear in mind:

Take young children for their first matches when the weather is warm. You might be prepared to sit through a match when it's freezing, but they may not.

Have a good supply of snacks & drinks as their attention span is short.

Try and find a seat where they can actually see the match. This may be a bit difficult with the reduced capacity.
