Sturridge Not Fit For England... But Fit For Liverpool?

I really don't like Brendan Rogers...

"I don't think he's fit to play for England. We're hoping he can develop over the next 48 hours to be in a position to train with the team on Thursday and maybe be available for the squad on Saturday."

Cock.

Fit enough for the squad means give him twenty minutes as part of his rehabilitation.

A trip to Estonia playing for a poor England side and being the only real goal threat in the squad... That will do him the world of good.

I think he's got a point.

Going to stick my neck out and say that it seems reasonable to me. He says Sturridge might travel with the Liverpool squad on Saturday if he can train Thursday. Doesn't say anything about him getting on the pitch. Even if he gets on towards the end it hardly puts him in a position to start an international 5 days later having played a few minutes at best all month.

At any rate England should be picking on form, not reputation. Unless he plays and scores a hat trick Saturday that isn't Sturridge at this point in time.

You're too sensible.

Now please edit your post and resubmit it based around Liverpool bashing.

Other side of the coin Costa at Chelsea , struggling with a hamstring injury so not training between games. Seems Chelsea are powerless to stop him going to play for the national side instead of resting it.  I guess that's why some clubs play these games.

That said if the player was fit and wanted to play , what would stop him?

If Sturridge is not playing why would he be considered , surely there is someone playing and in decent form somewhere?  Berahino ??

if costa is fit enough to play for his club then he is fit enough to play for his country, no sympathy for chelsea,

I was thinking of this lad. Great games to give him a go in.

England will not play Berahino. We'll have the dancing marionette who only scores with shin kicks.

Welbeck!

Didn't he recently win us a game against a top-10 ranked nation away from home?

As for Sturridge, I can see where Brendan Rodgers is coming from, but he's forgetting that it's not him that'll make the decision on whether Sturridge is fit enough, it's England's medical team. I would hope we can beat Estonia and San Marino without him, so it would be sensible to rest him, but that's not Rodgers decision to make

What do you expect him to say? BR's loyalty and priority is to Liverpool not England and to be fair to him, given Liverpools current form he needs his best players back ASAP. If I was in his shoes i wouldn't want to risk any players to potential injuries on international duty either.

Cant stand the England love in these days. Its just a squad of players that represent all that is wrong with PL football.

Can I ask why you think this? With the exception of Rooney the squad at present possesses none of the golden generation, none of the players are top earners at their clubs (again with the exception of Rooney), it is the youngest on average we have had in ages and for the first time in a long time I don't think you can question their hunger although the quality may lack.

Sure, firstly though i just want to point out that on re-reading my comment about England it may have come across as a dig at the OP - not intentional at all.

Over the past few years, for me England have come to represent a group of over hyped, over payed individuals that lack the spirit of what it meant to represent your country. I get your point about the younger players coming through replacing the older lot but for me the damage has been done - even when you look at how much transfer fees some of these 'youngsters' have been traded for and the reported wages of some of them, verses the return in quality and skill they poses - it's disgusting. Slightly off topic i know and maybe a debate for another day but it does link back to the OPs point i guess. Like i said, unfortunately for me they represent all thats wrong with the PL as a whole and is one of the main reasons im glad i support a local team, watch lower league footy and dont support any PL teams.

What a dilema i'd have if City ever made it to the PL ;-)

Sturridge has 74 goals in his 192 career games (0.38 goals per game) and Welbeck 41 in 183 (0.22 goals per game). Even Welbeck's 10 in 28 (35.7 gpg) for the national team isn't miles away from Strurridge's total of 5 in 16 (31.25 gpg). Sturridge has also scored 36 in 52 (0.69 gpg) at Liverpool, which is actually a better rate than Suarez's 82 in 133 at 0.62 gpg.

At club level they're not close at this stage but I don't see why Welbeck can't be successful at Arsenal, especially since he's their only centre forward with Giroud out long term. Clearly it's far too early to say, but he already has 4 in 5 for them.

That said, England would be mad not to want Sturridge in the team given what he's done since he's been at Liverpool.

Not forgetting of course that Welbeck has been consistently played out of position, usually on the left wing. I've always been a fan and consider him to be a far better all round player than Sturridge. In fact I think he's the only player in the current England set up that would have had any chance of making Ramsey's World Cup winning team.
