The Dolman Pragmatist
A propos today's news item, how many people who were in the East End in 1966 remember singing "Who are they looking for? Harry Roberts!" to the line of police in front of the stand?

Robbored
Although I was just a football mad youth at the time I remember the chant "Harry, Harry Roberts" being aimed at the police at AG. I heard the same chant at the County Ground as well.

Admin phantom Posted October 23, 2014 Admin Report Share Posted October 23, 2014 He's released this week apparently after 48 years inside. 78 and spent well over 50 years in prison - whats the betting that he'll be back inside within a year ? Pointless life. Why would he be back inside? Yeah he commited a crime, but he has served his time - certainly wouldn't be creating the same reaction if he had not killed two policemen! Surely murder is murder, no matter who you kill?

Cynic didn't mention policemen? I think his point was he's 78 and spent the best part of 50 years inside, a waste of a life, and it's going to be pretty tough settling back into a 'normal' life now. Can't imagine he's got too many friends left on the outside
REDOXO
Remember the song long after Roberts went down. Think he was lucky as hanging was only recently stopped! Sad indictment of the relationship with the police back then and to be honest it seems to have only really changed in the last few years in many cases/areas. Days gone by! Harry Roberts, Aberfan et al being sung on the EE....These days they throw you out for standing up!....Yep times have changed!

Harry Roberts, Aberfan et al being sung on the EE....These days they throw you out for standing up!....Yep times have changed! Indeed, times have (thankfully) changed although, regrettably, football fans appear still to be fair game for far too many of Britain's finest. I remember well, though was only a young boy at the time, how many 'lads' in the East End had ACAB tattooed on their fingers - its meaning was explained to me, but I must say I never really agreed with the sentiment (although, of course, and being an impressionable young boy, I used to join in with whistling the Zcars signature tune and the singing of 'who's that bloke with a tit on his head?'). Somerset Red
I always enjoyed the 'Dixon' song when a couple of unsuspecting coppers would walk in front of the East End.

Can't imagine he's got too many friends left on the outside He is a career criminal. He was a criminal before he killed and he continued to be involved with crime (drug dealing, contraband) whilst inside. He has plenty of friends inside and out within criminal circles so his "normal life" will no doubt continue to be intrinsically linked with crime

The ACAB thing is still very much alive and well not only within this country but all over Europe. If you go in some of the pubs around AG8 you will see references to this, forget which side it was but recently one of the top German sides had a whole end holding up card, which displayed ACAB with various artwork around it I guess the ACAB attitude is the flip side to those who believe all football fans are hooligans

REDOXO
Yes ACAB was pretty much the feeling! I wont get into my thoughts of the social/political issues that drew people to that conclusion in that era, but we remember it well!! Zcars and the T1T Head song were a bit more light hearted! Without wishing to prolong the ACAB thing (with which, for the record, I disagree totally), I also recall: 1. A song, to the tune (impossible, surely) of Andy Pandy finishing with the actual words of ACAB and 2. 'Lads' being challenged about the ACAB tattooed on their fingers and swearing blind that the C related to Cardiff!

He was transferred to an open prison and allowed unsupervised work......he ended back in normal prison when they realised he was not working just going into London and supposedly organising drugs and contraband. He also tried to escape on numerous occasions........this guy will never be rehabilitated.
