I had some **** trying ot wind me up for ages in Weston the other day for earing a city top, spitting clueless drivel about how 'shit' we are. Clearly didn't have a clue as to where we are in the table and was quite indulged in the prem football on offering so will hazard a guess and say he wasnt gas. To make things worse I went't to all stars the week before when Man Utd were on TV. The bar erupted everytime United scored and I couldnt help but feel my blood boil!

It doesn't end their though. My dad who grew up supporting chelsea (being from a family based in Hounslow) is currently on holiday in Padstow. He was watching the Chelsea vs Man U game when a couple of locals walked up to him and started screaming 'Your team are shit you Chelsea ****! and proceeded to carry on until he left. He wasn't even wearing his shirt!!

Slightly off topic I know, but proves that I would much rather have (preferebly friendly) banter with Rovers fans who proudly wear their colours like we do, than a bunch of clueless tosspots who support whoever wins the most games on TV. think they know the game? Experience the real atmosphere and love that supporting your local team provides us with.

Without a doubt, people opting to wear a Gas shirt. Sadly, PL shirts vastly outnumber both City and Rovers, although this isn't limited to just Bristol. It's just the way things are and I can't see anything changing. Portsmouth got it right when they advertised their season tickets with the slogan 'Football isn't a TV show', but for many it is.

I'm prepared to tolerate local retards in blue and white a lot more than PL plastics.

Even though the sight of that clowns' outfit turns my stomach, at least it's local tat.

I watched Hot Fuzz again last night and felt a bit sick when I saw Nick Frost in the vile colours, but I suppose it reinforced his character as the overweight thick one.

Cracking film, though :)

Venture down to the robins when Liverpool are on before city and if they score hear the cheering from blokes in city tops, i hate it!

I don't mind that. If they wear City shirts and are in the Robins en route to Ashton Gate, then having a preference for any Prem team in a televised game is OK.

Personally I have an empathy with Liverpool which dates back to 1993 when their fans accepted defeat by us in such a good way. They were obviously upset but acknowledged that the better team won on the night.

And for me I always look for Shrewsbury and Livingston results before any other because I used to live there.

I'm with most on here in that I detest the plastic fans of the top Premier teams and yes I would prefer to see gas shirts as the only alternative to City's red in Bristol.

Kids in premier league shirts for me, there is hope for them to grow up and realise the folly of their ways before turning to City. blue and white quarters are already lost to us...

Even amongst adults, presumably loyalty amongst the plastics isn't strong and they would be the people swelling the numbers at Ashton Gate should we ever get to the prem.

If you're going to get pissy about it and only allow people to be City fans who have always been, then the numbers attending are never going to increase. The aim should be to become one of these teams that people support just because they are in the prem, in which case you will have to accept fans that used to support someone else.

I know that, before the age of 12, I went through phases of supporting Man Utd and QPR. I put this down to not coming from a football supporting family.

Tricky question.

I will always have more respect for anyone who supports their local team, whether it's the Gas, Yeovil, Exeter etc, armchair fans are killing football in this country. However, it's always been relatively common for kids to support a Premier League club and it was no different when I was at school.

What interests me is that some of the kids who 'supported' Liverpool/Arsenal/Man Utd in my school and used to take the piss out of me for supporting City are now some of the most devoted City fans I know. They also take their own kids to AG and buy them City shirts.

As richwwtk points out, anyone wearing a Gas shirt is already lost to our club. I may respect their loyalty but they are never going to contribute anything to BCFC. A kid wearing a Gas shirt is going to be a Gashead, a kid wearing a Man Utd shirt could be a City fan. Whenever I take my boy to his football training there's a couple of City shirts but the vast majority wear PL clubs shirts. It wouldn't make me feel better if the vast majority wore Gas tops, it would actually worry me because I don't know any Gasheads from my youth who now support City. I also know plenty of blokes who follow City but also support a Premier League side.

On that basis I'd rather have a drink with a reasonable Gashead than a plastic Man Utd fan but that doesn't mean to say I'd prefer to see Gas tops instead of Man Utd ones on the streets of Bristol.....if that makes sense?

Supporting somebody else's team has always been weird to me, especially when it a a northern hellhole. I think this activity is the reserve of the sad sad glory hunting individual. Let's face it, wearing polyester sportswear and watching moving images on a screen makes you no more a real supporter than an actual premier league player. Support your own local team.

I don't get the "having two teams" thing.  I really don't.

Like people who say they support City and then Man U, what happens if they play eachother?

I just don't get how you can have that much passion for more than one team, your team is your team and there just isn't space for another if you ask me.

Would much prefer someone from Bristol supporting r*vers than a prem team.

I look out for certain other teams results, mainly due to friends or family connections, but I would never say I support that other team.

Coaching kids in South Bristol I would be alarmed if I saw numerous Gas shirts v the big clubs.

Regarding local clubs Bristol City are not the club local kids see on a daily basis. In BS3 you can see huge adverts for the EPL, street stalls in East Street selling items featuring the Big clubs, local shops have EPL goods not those of BCFC, City cente stores have "BIG" not, local Bristol kids can access club training videos [City don't do this!] and tv stations of the "BIG", there are roadshows in town from Arsenal and on this goes.

Bristol City v the blanket coverage of the EPL are virtually invisible. Bristol City could make marginal gains by becoming the local side that is evident in its community. The Community Trust is a start but it is a finger in dyke at this point.

Getting seen in shops and on the streets raises awareness. The EPL advertises and widely markets itself, City just don't.

To be fair that is the last place that you want to go, the place thrives on plastic fans

I know four people who are actually manure season ticket holders, they are all bristol born n bred, i have put the same question to all of them...." why support utd when we have (at the time) two league teams in bristol ?"

They all come out with the same answer," Football in bristol is crap, i would rather watch a prem team,"

I always reply that if more locals supported their own teams the better those teams become, better attendances, better atmosphere, and more income for the clubs, which in turn allows the clubs to invest in better players etc etc..........all i get is a look of Whooosh

Cardiff run a football school here, so do WBA, Southampton are in Baff, Swansea are opening up in Bristol as well, Manchester United boss Broadmead, Chelsea are running the midfield in Cabot Circus and BS have hit back by putting a fanny on City shirts which can't be bought anywhere except ashton Gate. Local who?

I would argue these are the opposite to what was highlighted above, they chose their team and actually follow them.

I get the same arguement put to me living in Weston. Why don't I support my local side instead of following City all around the country. I would tell them the same answer as what your friends mentioned above, whilst they say the same thing to me

As a side issue, we are a prime example of having money to invest and not being able to guarantee success so not convinced better attendances etc would ever guarantee success

Different sport but the same problem, I went over to bath a few years ago to watch Bath V Bristol,

i boarded the bus at St.George and was shocked to see mainly bath shirts being worn !

in fact more piled on at hanham, longwell green and bitton....what's that all about ?

Probably the fact that Bath have had continuous Prem rugby whereas Bristol have had a poor record over last fifteen / twenty years.

If only Bris can get promotion this season, SL will do his best for them to stay in and grow as a Premier Rugby team. Then you'll see the rugby version of plastic Premier football fans going to the Gate instead.

And if promotion is gained this year, Bristol Rugby will fill the stadium on at least four occasions; versus Bath, Gloucester, Leicester and Northampton. Possibly Exeter? No segregation so every seat filled.
