Red Rag
What the hell has happened to football. Why do I feel like the odd one out when leaping from my seat to protest at dodgey refereeing designs, fouls by opposition players, or just generally going off on one when things are not going our way. I look around to see people just sat there with blank expressions. Am I in the wrong, I remember the days when so long as an opposition player was in ear shot all manner of insults would be hurled at him, mostly humorous but none the less let the sods know your there. Bless me we are far to nice, get a bit feisty it will help the team.

exAtyeoMax
From your seat you can't see everyone's expression or reactions. To be honest I'm looking towards the pitch and what is going on there, not who is doing what around me. There are lots of people shouting but because it isn't in unison it won't be heard. Steve Cotterill is usually hoarse after a match but I can't hear him shout from where I am.

1960maaan
I would have liked the new EE / South stand to have unreserved seating but it wont happen. Might be possible when the ground is complete with plenty of room but not until then. Unreserved would mean those that wanted to sing and jump around could sit together, with a nice new shiney stand it may happen naturally, we can only wait and see. At the moment, it is what it is. exAtyeoMax
can people not specify that they want to sit in the singing section when they buy their season ticket? Does it have to be unreserved seating?

Does it have to be unreserved seating? Unreserved seating makes so much sense on so many levels. I would be delighted to see premium seats (middle blocks, upper tier) and a family enclosure reserved seating and the rest of the whole ground unreserved seating. Away games are much better when were able to stand/"sit" where we want and the people wanting to sing can get together. I always go on my so for me I used to love the east end as I could just go stand near a group of people making noise and join in. Reserved seating means you'll end up with people wanting to make a noise all dispersed and inbetween them people that might not.

Not if they specify a certain area surely? There is a family block so why not a singing block as there is at the Shed End of the Williams at the moment? Guest
I'm not being funny, but why? You can sit where you want, when you want. If you bring a friend who is not a regular there's no difficulty in 'ah you gonna have to sit two rows ahead diagonally on the left' yada yada yada. Invariably of course people will tend to sit where they do ordinarily, but it's pretty damn frustrating currently for instance where you have umpteen clusters of two three or four seats empty in the Dolman but if you try to buy a ticket for you or a mate, or both you'll find only singles available. Personally, rather than what is the benefit of unreserved seating, I wonder what is the benefit of reserved seating? Premium seats pricing - fair enough, flog the middle blocks in the dolman and williams as reserved. Bringing kids, fine have a family block or two reserved. Want your own seat every time? Don't be so precious, but if you do get there at 2:30 and you'll be fine. If you can't get your one seat, I bet you'll be able to get one within 5 seats either side or row so much of a muchness. Like the people you sit around? Well, if they like you they'll probably float in and around the same block, don't need reserved seating for that. Conversely, sit near a bell end, get up and move. It's one of the reasons they are so keen on databases. I suspect it is also one of the reasons that the authorities are so unwilling to introduce safe standing. Personally, I would like to see areas of unreserved seating. Another reason the atmosphere is nullified is that people aren't arriving long in advance of kick off to secure their spot like they used to. Premier League grounds are virtually empty 10 minutes before kick off, they then fill very rapidly. Also wish clubs wouldn't blast out songs from the tannoy. Think we're living in a more self-conscious age than ever before, people are more inhibbitted. The demographic of attendee have also taken an effect. I, for one, am not comfortable effing and jeffing at the top of my voice around children, nor women for that matter.
22A
I read an article by a journalist back here after a few years in Italy. he went to watch a Charlton game. 1. He was amazed to see away fans openly wearing their colours in the streets outside the ground. - Never get away with that in Italy 2. He couldn't understand why Charlton employee someone to stand at the front and lead songs. - What happened to spontaneous songs & chants? 3. The club make a big thing of "WELCOMING today's visitors". - In Italy you know the visitors are anything but welcome.

People will sit where they sit and there may be a handful of occassions where that shifts, if that. handsofclay
In Italy they have to create a lot of atmosphere because most of the pitches are so far away from the stands that if they didn't make a racket nobody would know that they were there. A couple of seasons ago I watched Mangotsfield v City reserves at the Gate in the GFA Cup. Bolasie was having a mare and became the subject of humorous banter aimed at him by Mango fans. At half time the City stewards warned them even though none of it was racist, and it killed the atmosphere. So maybe as well as it being all seater stadia people nowadays are more reluctant to let forth because we are far more PC and they fear they might shout something they consider inoffensive that someone else might strongly object to. Ohbasso
Not sure why some people are so obsessed with having a reserved seat, but each to their own I suppose. But when the new ground is finished it's the perfect opportunity for the club to make sure they cater for each type of fan with ample choice of where to stand/sit. Eg - A large family area (preferable not next to away fans) An area for for people that like to sit and analyse the game A large area for singers to gather, where they can stand, swear and wave flags etc (hopefully the new eastend) An area for the corporate types There will be plenty of space for every type of fan, hopefully the club get it right even if it takes a couple of seasons for everything to settle down.
