One of City all time greats.

Best memory though is of a Saturday morning early 1960's on the front at Cleethorpes on the dodgems with about six City players including Jantzen and Shadow Williams and the teenagers from Number One coach. Well unless it was a close away game we only got one coach in those far off pre motorway days.

When we got to Grimsby at about 6-30am, we went to the bus depot canteen for a big fry up. Yes it was an overnight coach ride leaving AG at 11pm on Friday.

Memories!

Remember him well as a player.  Am I correct in thinking that he liked to be known as Jim?

Yep, he was often called Jim, not sure if it was his preference though. First saw Jantz play in 1958 for Bristol Boys against Swansea Boys in the English! Schools Football Association Under 15 final at the Vetch Field. Bristol won the cup that year. In that game Jantz had a stationary ball at his feet and lifted it over his marker and ran around him collected the ball and continued away on his dribble. Quite unique in those days, as a 15 year old, even with the likes of Puskas and Di Stefano around. Jantzen's son, Paul, also featured in a ESFA cup winning team for Bristol Boys in 1979. I believe the only father and son duo to have achieved this.

I was once told by "someone who knows" Chris Garland would never pass to Jantzen. Any other old timers able to confirm or refute that story please?

Getting back to the OP, will we in future years go to "Dodgy Dave's" to buy a truck from Mr Beckham?

What year would that have been then Harts? Law was the early 60's if i am not mistaken but am sure there were others before him Jantzen, it seems, included.

Denis Law, Jimmy Greaves, Gerry Hitchens and John Charles all went to Italian football in the early 1960's.

Jantzen left City in 1970/71(?) For Paris St Germain. At this time French football was apparently less popular in France than Cycling and Rugby Union. While I do not know if he was the first English pro to go there, it is very possible that he was indeed, the first.

So Harts was a bit off with his 'factoid' , date and country wise, but I was assuming he was quoting Derrick himself. Perhaps Derrick forgot or has been telling fibs for so long its now a fact in his mind. !

Think John Charles was first in 1957 to Juventus.
