Best Of Times & Worst Of Times: A Tale Of Two City Moments

I was thinking about my times supporting City and about how good this season/team has been compared to so many past seasons. I came up with my best and worst moments as a supporter :

Best moment was walking into Wembley for the Championship final after an incredible 2 seasons and seeing all the City fans in our national stadium. We were possibly only  90 mins from being in the Premiership- the feeling was amazing.

The next was listening to gas being relegated to non league obscurity whilst on a weekend away in Edinburgh and looking at the increasingly delirious thread on otib. Sad but true it was like winning the world cup for me.

The worst moment ( other than that night at Trumpton) was last season after the most abject performance I think I've ever witnessed- Sheffield United at home.We looked every bit relegation fodder- and every home game was pitiful to watch. My 11 year old son who I only get to see every other weekend said after final whistle " Dad- can we do something different instead of watching Bristol City?"I was devastated and realised how much trouble our entire club was in.

Fortunately SC saved us and my boys love attending every match with me and I hope they get to have some of their own special moments as born and bred Reds.

How about sharing some of your own moments? We have such a wide age range on OTIB- there must be some interesting stuff.

Best - has to be 5th March, 1991 and the Louie Donowa moment. Hadn't seen us beat that lot until that night. One of the G*s on here even commented on how loud it was when the ball went it. That is what football is all about, local rivals, last minute. Even promotion to the Premiership won't top that moment for me

Another one that I look back fondly on was an away day at Wycombe - giving it all the 'we got Mickey Bell' before the game, pretty sure it was first minute, brought down in the box and gets up to score the penalty. Not a particularly important moment, but one I won't forget

Worst - 1-3 at home to Walsall in the first leg of the play off final. All those hopes, crushed by David '*******' Kelly.....again! Also pretty much any time we've played Wolves

That's what Jon said to Steve for most of last season as well!

Both games I've been to this season (Oldham home and Coventry away) have been high-points of the past 4-5 years for me. Two games that showed how far we've come in the past 12 months - atmosphere, belief in the crowd and on the pitch, togetherness between supporters, the team, and the manager. Haven't felt that since Gary Johnson's days.

Other highs, more left field than the obvious Hartlepool, Palace play-offs, Rotherham promotion games...

- Tinman's 500th game at Notts County and the last minute winner

- Cardiff home and away in 2002/03 with two 2-0 wins

- Scott Murray's goal at home to Oldham where he ran the full length of the pitch

- Murray's lobbed equaliser against Middlesbrough in the FA Cup at the Gate a few years back

there's loads more.

Most of my highs came between the ages of roughly 15-21. Some great games and moments, particularly under Wilson and Johnson, and this was the age where City really had a hold on me and I was able to go to 20-30 games a season.

Many lows, the last 3 years up until the revival under SC were absolutely miserable:

- 3-1 defeat at Brentford last season with Elliot Parish in goal, Tyrone Barnett up front... Terrible performance and I was convinced walking out of the ground that we'd soon be League Two team.

- 1-1 home draw with Sheff Wed under O'Driscoll in the Championship. Last game I attended that season and we simply had to win, but there was no real drive, no intensity on or off the pitch. Really, really poor, and the sign of things to come under his leadership.

Further back:

- 0-6 home defeat to Cardiff.

- 5-1 defeat at Blackpool under DW circa 2001 - we needed a win to stay in play-off contention, and were 4-0 down after about 30 minutes.

- 2-1 defeat at Swindon (Basso's debut) when we were bottom of League One (again)

- 7-1 at Swansea.

I was fortunate to miss about 90% of O'Driscoll's tenure, but going into every game expecting to lose... Lowest 12 months as a City fan for sure.

Best- Got to be Wembley 08. Watching the teams walk out in that game I've never felt so emotional before a ball had even been kicked. It was difficult at the end because if one more person had said "oh well at least we got our day out" I was going to kill them, but I was so immensely proud of what we had achieved that season.

Couple of recent ones:

Sheffield Wednesday away 2-3 and Alberts late free kick. For a moment it felt like all our relegation fears could be put to bed! Admittedly that feeling didn't last long.....

Carlisle last season. It wasn't a great game and was only lit up by JETs hat trick... but bloody hell had a win been a long time coming. The relief and jubilation at a win away at Carlisle is not something I'm particular proud of... but it was like embracing a long lost brother. I hugged about 15 different strangers when the fourth went in.

Worst: any time we play Wolves, get hammered by Cardiff or the gas get one over on us.

Best - The Hartlepool home play-off game was pretty special

Worst - There have been so many but how about Florist away. 2-1 up mid way through second half when Gunter throws the ball to McAllister in the corner after a Basso injury break then immediately shuts him down, steals the ball back then gets pulled back causing MacAllister to get a second yellow. Inevitable what happened next - we lose 3-2. Cheats.

Best - 11 wins in a row in 03/04. Obviously Playoff semis vs Hartlepool and Crystal Palace too.

Worst - Getting beaten by Crawley Town 1-0 in the FA Cup whilst we were a Championship club.

The whole Steve Coppell fiasco, which made us a laughing stock.

Every bloody time we go to the County Ground.

Keith Fear lob to equalise against Leeds in the FA Cup when they were the best team in the country...we won the replay at Elland Road.

Worst was Wrexham, again in the Cup, coming back from 2 nil down to lead 4-2 at the Gate, we pulled a 4-4 draw but got whipped in the replay.

Both a long time ago when our aspirations were pretty high!!

Best two.

Big Cheese and the lads at Arsenal 1-0.

Kevin Mabbutt 3-1 Manure at Old Trafford

Worst.

Newport County away when we all thought it would be the last ever City game.

Northampton 7-1 City during our slide to the bottom of Div Four.

I was thinking almost the same in terms of worst and best. The only thing to add is the unbelievable atmosphere and love for the team as they ran out at Newport to what seemed to be almost  an exclusively City crowd.

Best moment? Winning at Highbury first game back in the top division just edges out the FA Cup win at Leeds and John Atyeo's promotion goal in 1965.

Worst moment, with no shadow of doubt, was our abject surrender to Brighton at the Millennium Stadium. Even being stuffed by the Gas, far too many stuffings by Wolves, several relegations, near bankruptcy and the truly dreadful football under Russell Osman pale into insignificance. It makes me angry with Danny Wilson even now - bring on the Thatch :drunk2:

Best; Portsmouth game 1976

Worst; losing to WBA away in 1999, when both Ivan and Mickey Bell were carried off with season ending injuries, and later to be convicted felon Lee Hughes, scored a winner for them in about the 10th minute of injury time.

It was actually a 2-2 draw mate but it felt like a defeat to me, those injuries were awful and the ref seemed to be playing on until they equalised, it was about ten mins of added time like you said.

And it HAD to be Lee Hughes who scored and he did that cringy celebratory dance that he thought was his trademark!

Bestist........Chester away....our rise from the depths

Worstist......Chester away when the gearbox ****ed

Were we in the same car ha ha ?

on the way back , the exhaust on our mark 1 escort fell off at worcester ,

the gear stick came off at cheltenham ,

we somehow drove to the horseshoe inn at coalpit heath stuck  in top gear without stopping !

that day at chester and the party that night , are one of my best city times ,

the worse ? no single game does it , when were on one of those downward spirals , when we expect to get beat every game , and get relegated ,

gives me this hopeless , sick feeling , thats hard to explain.

It was under Russell Osman when City gave me my best away night and Souness was duly sacked the next morning.

I'd forgotten ( blanked out) this one. It wasn't so much that we surrendered more that we just didn't turn up. I seem to remember that we had only recently re-signed Scotty from Reading and he didn't seem to get in the game.

The best bit was pre match entertainment with those guys doing a ball skills competition one wearing City kit and one Brighton. Our man won to a massive cheer which was the last City cheer that day.

My very best moment was the very first time I came into the ground between the enclosure and the East End back in 1967 for the FA Cup tie with Southampton.

He ground was packed -  had never seen so many people - and the excitement of that day, with a 1-0 win, has never been matched since, not even on the promotion night against Pompey, although that des rank a very lose second.

Worst moment is still every time we lose.
