Thierry Henry Retires

Announced yesterday.

In my view he was the greatest goalscorer I've ever seen and that includes Jimmy Greaves.

175 PL goals over a 100 scored at Highbury. A tue Arsenal legend.

Simply brilliant finisher. No-one better.

Now he's off to work for Sky as a pundit.

A tue Arsenal legend eh? So he had a therapeutic use exemption from the anti-doping board. Interesting, perhaps that's why he scored so many goals.

Still a handballing cheat though.

Don't understand it. Pro footballers say that Maradona and Henry were favourite/greatest players. Forever condemned by me as cheats and thus disqualified out of hand to be considered great. The English and Irish have more than enough reasons to share my opinion.

Even worse some players blame the officials for not spotting the handballs rather than the players, what is that????

If somebody is that good why would they need to cheat?

So you will turn your back on all the great things that Henry did and all the competitions won on the basis of one hand ball?

You will end up with a pretty short list if you rule out anyone that has broken a rule.

Sadly its the first image that pops in my head when he's mentioned. No love for him in Ireland that's for sure.

Top goalscorer for sure, just never really warmed to the bloke.

Henry was embarrassed and full of remorse after the handball. Apologised and said it was "an instinctive reaction". Not that many Irish fans accepted that.

Do many of us point at Zindanes sending off in the World Cup final as a black mark against one of the Worlds greatest players?

Not me in both cases.

Instinctive? The initial contact might of being but the prolonged celebration wasn't. A magnificent player for sure, but like Maradona, a cheat. A real shame for both of them and why, IMO, they fall short of Pele for me.

The case of Zidane is different in a way. A violent reaction to an insult that shouldn't have happened, but he wasn't trying to gain an unfair advantage through cheating.

You can hardly blame them!

If we lost say a playoff final to something similar you would be ok with it would you?

I do.

I don't like the thought of the brilliant Thierry Henry being dissed because of one " instinctive" handball.

So "instinctive" he touched it twice with his hand.

Not arguing he wasn't a good player, but that was just plain and simple cheating and it does IMO tarnish his record.

Conveniently he only expressed his remorse and apologised after the final whistle that confirmed France went through.  Compare, for instance, with Fowler's instinctive reaction v Arsenal when a penalty was awarded for Liverpool and he immediately turned to the ref to get it overturned.

Best striker of the premier league era for me (born in '91 so all I really know) had everything you could want in a striker and his goals per minute ratio shows it with him sitting top. If he hadn't gone to Barca and stayed longer I'm sure he'd have beaten Shearer for most goals. Also seems like a genuine guy which is nice to see around football, will be tainted by the handball but should also be remembered for the player he was.
