Evans And Cisse

Why are people so obsessed with spitting?  Footballers spit all the time (I had a girlfriend whose favourite player spat copiously right in front of her at a match, and she never got over it).  In Evans's case, it appears to me that he is spitting down on the ground, which might be because he needed to, or as an expression of contempt (is spitting on the ground as a gesture of contempt now unacceptable?).  He doesn't appear to be spitting in Cisse's face, so what's the big deal?  In any case, would you rather someone spat in your general direction, or punched you?

Because spitting at and biting people are two of the lowest things you can do.

I quite agree, I went to a Junior School in a rough part of Bristol in the 50's and I got spat at and was bitten, and other times the teachers would beat me with an iron bar :smartass:

Isn't he Northern Irish? So the OP was right with British

UK but not British.

While it looks to me that Evans could claim that he accidentally gobbed on Cisse, Cisse's retaliation, straight in the face from 12 inches, has less of a get-out clause.

Perhaps he could "claim" that but surely if you know you need to have a spit and another player is in close attendance you turn your head away from them to gob. Spitting at someone is something you expect from a four year old who doesn't know any better. The general behaviour of players in the Premiership is pathetic.

Are you sure you went to a rough school? I thought the "iron bar treatment" was more public school!! The Houses of Parliament and Barristers chambers are full of old boys who enjoyed a bit of iron bar punishment.

Away from the point of the thread but my OCD is overwhelming me. He is a British Citizen (will say as such in his passport) despite being born off the Island of Great Britain (as such a rule would stop those from the Isle of white, Anglesey and the many Scottish Isles from being British too).

I think McManaman said on commentary last night that spitting is worse than breaking someone's leg. I've heard other players say this. Really??!! I'm guessing those who say this have probably never broken their leg.

I guess if it was a really full, heavy amount of gob and it hit you in the leg a break could be possible.

Agree, this is the kind of weird nonsense that gets wheeled out by 'pro's all the time. Wipe some gob off your face vs. have your career ended?!? Suspect it's something to do with leg breakers being loveable hard men and spitters being cowardly Johnny foreigners, but still nonsense.

Have to disagree WTTJ. He's from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. That's why he'd qualify to play for Ireland at rugby or cricket and - were he an Olympic athlete - he could choose to do the same.

I'm not making a sectarian point here - being neither Irish or Catholic - when I say Northern Ireland is not "Britain".

The status of Anglesey, which is part of Wales, is irrelevant.

ahh but Ireland is in the British Isles, so it may be okay ;)

I would assume that it is more to do with "respect". That said, I would definitely prefer to be spat at than have my leg broken..

So Cisse says sorry straight off and he was the one who was spat on first. Seven game ban.

Evans denies it and denies it and was the one who started it. Six game ban.

How on god's green earth is that anywhere near correct?

I think he got an extra game due to a ban he's already served this season (or somthing along those lines)

But at least cisse admitted it, rather than cowardly lying like Evans

Both received 6 match bans, but Cisse's was increased by one match as he had already been sent off this season.
