Letter From Pat Beasley - 14Th June 1951

Good afternoon all.

My Grandfather and my Uncle collect a lot of sporting memorabilia and when I went to my Grandfather's house on Saturday night, he told me that someone gave him a box of items. In there were a number of sporting books and a signed city shirt from the squad a few years back. Currently analysing each one to confirm the year.

However, within one of the books, he found the letter that you can hopefully see in the link below. I had some crappy message on here about not being able to have the image on this message board and the attachments were all too big.

He said to me well you can keep that, which I was very happy about. But driving back to Wolves from Bristol yesterday, I thought that it would probably be more suitable in the hands of either the club, or a relative of one of the people listed in the letter.

Obviously Pat Beasley was the player manager at the time as you'll see from his position noted at the top of the paper and the signature at the bottom. He was up until 1952 when he became the full time manager until 1958. He was born in Stourbridge which is not too far away from Wolverhampton so he may well have some (albeit) distant family still here.

I looked through the history books and G S Kendall never played a first team match for Bristol City, so from what me and Granddad deciphered, he was either a colt or a reserve team player.  We are also not too sure on who Mr Crandon or Mr King were either, could well have been Directors at the time. it's only a very small letter. Unfortunately, it did not come with the enclosed form, so we are guessing he returned it to the club.

So yes, basically, can anyone shed any light on who these people were? Does anyone know whether any of the relatives would like this in their possession, or would the club like it for any reason? Either way, someone else would appreciate it a lot more I feel.

I thought this would be the best place to start.

Much love

Dan

I would suggest that you might like to donate it to the new Club Museum. I am in the process of disposing of my programme collection to a yet to be chosen young City fan. But I have asked the Club via David Lloyd, if they want any items.

I started watching City in 1950 and do not recollect any first teamer called Kendall. Possibly one of the younger ones in the reserves (Football Combination) or Colts (Western League).

The letter also emphasises the role of the Club Manager also involved quite routine clerical duties in addition to managing and coaching the First and Reserve teams. Totally different from today.

No mention of a Kendall here

So as others have suggested it may have been some youngster.

No mention of a Kendall on this site either [has more past players listed on this one]-

Using my Genealogy site have found he may have been George Samuel Kendall b 1933 and married Patricia Luffman in 1954 at Kingswood. He apparently died 1996.

As stated above he may have not sent the form back or was employed in some other post ie Training, Groundstaff etc.

Some more info on this sent to me via email:

Mr T King was probably Mr Ted King who was my headmaster at Knowle Park Junior school in the 1960s.   We often used to get free access to Bristol Boys matches because Mr King had been the team manager (I think) previously.   He had a big and continuing influence with Bristol Schools football.   In 1963-64 I saw my first Bristol Boys match when they beat Somerset Boys 5-1 at Ashton Gate and I know the Boys beat Liverpool Boys at Ashton Gate in a later round before losing to Stoke Boys at Eastville in the final.   Mr King arranged for final year Juniors to go to those matches.  It was going to see those early Bristol Boys matches that got me into supporting City.

I would assume that G Kendall was a Bristol Boys player which is why no record can be found of him having been on the Bristol City books.
