New Captain For Next Season..

Give it to flint and it will take his mind off doing the job he has done this season.

See this comment every year but never understood it.

Why would it take Flint's mind off of his job any more than it would Smith?

Wasn't Baldock our captain when he was L1's top scorer?

The only reason Flint is suggested is because he's a big centre half. He's a proper character possibly not suited to being diplomatic at times. Korey Smith as captain all day for me.

He doesn't have any problem shouting at his comrades on the pitch!

Not sure what the purpose of a captain is in football other than to lead the side out and call the toss.

I think its a redundant institution and, unless forced to name a captain, I wouldn't.

I agree with this, it's certainly not like rugby or cricket. I think the important thing is that we have strong characters in key areas. Not just on the pitch but also in the dressing room. We certainly have this, but could probably do with another one or two experienced heads, especially given that Wade won't be playing next season, but I don't think the identity of the on-field captain matters so much in football.

And much the worse for it imo. Agree with all that you say.

Wilbs would be a no from me as I wouldn't like to put money on him being a starter week in week out. Could be the same as this season otherwise, with captain not even playing half the time.

Elliott barely played this season and Wilbs filled in when he had to, could see similar next season with Smith filling in when Wilbs doesn't play.

Flint won't be captain imo, he doesn't need the armband to be a vocal point in the team or to inspire other players.

Have you ever played a team sport?

Yeah, but usually captain was a token gesture to the fat kid or the manager's son.

I'm being facetious but I see no point in the need for a captain in football where its a bloody free-for-all anyway. You don't need an armband to gee up your mates or inspire them. Just because you don't wear an arm band doesn't excuse you from geeing anyone up. As for relaying the manager's instruction he's only got to bloody yell - if they can't hear the team can relay or any one of those other blokes on the bench. As for organisation for me it should be the Goalkeeper pulling the strings and organising and yelling - he's got the best view after all.

In some sports yes I agree the captain is a vital role. In football and the way it has developed, not in my opinion.

I tend to agree although the way Cotterill has used the captaincy this season has been perfect and shows that it still has some role in the game.

I believe any contentious decision by the ref can be questioned legitimately by the captain... So you don't want a mouth bell end given the job. Needs to be a calm level headed guy imo. You can have all the mouthy gee up merchants still cajoling the team...
