grubby Posted May 19, 2015 Report Share Posted May 19, 2015 I did my early drinking/playing darts in 2 pubs, the white horse, Ashley road, a cracking "paddy" pub that rarely shut...... and the old fox , Gloucester rd, horfield, the late martin budd was landlord for many years and was a good host, letting me drink at 15/16 years old, even though a lot of screws drank in the place, being 6ft2 and 16 stone probably helped!!! We all used to go down the pub and the same faces were there but lets be honest pre 2000 there wasn't much better to do other than go to the pub. Now we all have phones and tablets etc to keep us in contact with friends where as before it was easier to catch up with friends down the pub. 15 years ago everyone in my street would be there at some point in the day. Children grew up in beer gardens. Back then you knew everyone in your street. Now I know the people either side of my house but thats it. People tend to keep themselves to themselves now and are not interested in socialising and that's another reason why pubs have changed. I used to go down the pub out of boredom and then habbit but now there is so much more to do in life then wasting time at the pub. Most people now go to a pub for a meal and thats the only time I now ever really go. The pubs that failed to serve food generally closed whilst those that adapted to the changing market and served food have remained open and grew stronger. The problem was many publicans were stuck in their ways and didn't want pubs to change. They wanted it to remain as it was. The Lord Rodney is where the first Gloucestershire Cup Final was played in 1888, well the Rodney Road playing fields to be more precise, but believe the pub was used as changing rooms. Then moved to Fire Engine Hill, West St. and as a teenager went upto the 'Three Horseshoes' aka the 'Three Lions' top of the hill, for a bottle of 'Cydapple' or 'Dandelion & Burdock' plus a packet of 'KP Salted Peanuts and change out of a 1/-, not forgetting the 3d of for the returned bottle! The Garlands kept the 'White Horse' further along West St. and the link to Chris Garland. Now I can remember watching Dennis Roberts, Capt. many times and can recall visiting the 'Avon Packet' Coronation Rd. with my late father and meeting Dennis as he was the Landlord. Another player who kept a pub was Bert Hoyle, goalie from across town who lived in Cockwood, Starcross, Devon on the Exe Estuary and he kept the 'Anchor Inn'. Visited it many times when on holiday in Torquay. Bert had had a terrible road accident on Redhill and suffered head injuries which stopped him playing for 'them' I believe Paul Cheesley kept the 'Star' Tickenham but never went when he was there. Relatives of mine kept the 'Butchers Arms' Nailsea and her daughter kept the 'Sawyers Arms' the other end of town which was a haunt of Adge Cutler. Rumour has it he was related to us but never found out if it was true. So how many local pubs were kept by other City players over the years.? Great pub in the late 80's early 90's until the landlord Barry was forced out by the brewery. He even built a ski slope in the back garden and managed to get himself into the Sun newspaper for it. In came the managers and it was a downhill all the way. Blige...that takes me back...we used that pub when it was called the New Inn, cracking little cider house full of cracking cider heads then an ex cop took it over and destroyed it and changed the name to The Highwayman....having ruined our local he headed down to the A37 weston road and took on The Full Quart Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Alan Williams ran the White Horse for many years - now flats. He also had before that the Miners at Farrington Gurney - now an Indian restaurant. He also had with his son Gary (also a City player) the Horse & Groom near College Green - last I saw closed and not looking good. Paul Cheesley had the Knowle, think another one as well in addition to the one you mention. There was another City player from the 50's had a pub on the Bristol-Weston Road many years ago, long closed. Fatty Wedlock ran a little boozer called Wedlocks. I once made the mistake of buying a bottle of lager rather than a pint. Bottles were chilled using the drip tray on top of the back of the bar method. Used to really like the White Hart. Watched a good few England games in there on the big screen and also a couple of City away games I couldn't get to (like Sunderland away when Soren Anderson got the late equaliser). I also remember a couple of pubs in town that would have been knocked down when Cabot Circus was built. I think they were called the Mail Coach and The Crown? The mail coach was between C&A and LIttlewoods. Used to pop in for a couple when I was working in town. Once after one session during 1999 rugby World Cup I walked into (literally) Jonah Lomu who was staying with the all blacks in the Marriott. There was another City player from the 50's had a pub on the Bristol-Weston Road many years ago, long closed. Fatty Wedlock ran a little boozer called Wedlocks. I played football for the White Horse when Alan Williams ran it and remember playing against The Golden Guinea,Redcliffe who had about 6 ex city players playing. In fact the most recently opened, a converted old Post office, feels like it's been their for Centuries.
