England - New Zealand

Can't believe there isn't a thread yet for the first test match of our summer!

Lyth just gone, but it seems the TMS team were happy with how he looked whilst making 7....I'll bow to their superior knowledge

Nice to see Wood in too, with a name like that he can't go wrong!

One thing that is really getting me right now though, the England players referring to Andrew Strauss, their boss, as 'Straussy'. Show some respect, and make it seem like it isn't a closed shop for your mates right now, even though it is

Tough summer ahead, we'll do well to beat NZ, and even better to not get annihilated by the Aussies

25-3, wonder if a certain ex number 4 becomes a hot topic of conversation.

Will make for an interesting conversation, I understood the point that Ballance, Root & Bell deserve their places, but if we get done 0-2 here and one of them is massively out of form before The Ashes.....

TMS saying Ali wasn't ready.

Just read that, having a net! Jesus - doesn't that sum up this shower of shite

Just tweeted that Jason Gillespie has been arrested for doing a handbrake turn on the M1 - only half tweeted in jest!

He wouldn't, but it won't stop people talking about him.

And doesn't he like it when he's the centre of attention?!?!

Anyway, forget KP; where on earth would this England side be without Joe Root?! Has to be up there with the best test batsmen in the world at the minute and he's still only 24 I think

He's going out with the daughter of someone I used to play cricket with. What with Cook's Dad opening the batting for us back in the day it seems that good old Cam CC has a few links to the England team right now.....could make the 6s interesting if we can persuade them to come down!

Root is a star, he looks like Cook did at his age, unflappable

I am back for the Cardiff test, with tickets for all days:  should start looking for alternative things to do for days 5, 4 and possibly much of 3...

This does not bode well.

Why not?  213-5.  Slightly behind.  Would want 400 at start of play but should get 330+ which when you consider the start is pretty good.

To be fair, the way NZ have batted lately 400 is the minimum we'd need in the first innings, I suspect

Lords in May can be a leveller though

Good comeback in the afternoon session for England though, fingers crossed Root & Buttler can see us through to stumps now

We were still at the 30-4 stage when I had last checked the actual score:  I realise that recovering to 213-5 is a better display.

If NZ can rip through us like that, I fully expect Australia to be able to as well.

The first hour today was almost perfect for bowling and the Kiwis took full advantage of the conditions. Once the pitch dried out a tad England were already 4 down. That said Cook played a reckless shot to get caught.

In came Stokes and Root on a much less responsive pitch and put on over 150.

Good to see a positive approach at last.

Agreed, Super. I think that if the younger batsmen go out to be aggressive then most of the public will forgive them when it doesn't go to plan. I'm sure most people will be delighted to see England being aggressive and trying to score quickly, even if it won't work all the time - and it won't.
