Why should he know where Millfield school is? He's from Manchester, not the west country.

Its known fairly nationally but you are right he is from Manchester and sounds like he left school at around the age of 8

What a horrible, arrogant attitude. Yes, it is a nationally known school but there's no reason why he should know it and the fact he doesn't know it doesn't mean anything. It certainly doesn't make him stupid or whatever you think that indicates. Weird.

I used to live on the same road as Gary...Harwood, near Tottington....he's originally from Bury. He's actually a very nice bloke, and very down to earth. Does his local shopping in Tescos in Bury, and will chat to anyone. I have a lot of time for the bloke...and he is well educated...he just sounded furious on that call.

I am horrible and arrogant for criticisng a man, well known to a sporting fan, who swears at a junior incessantly over the phone... Get off your stupid horse and take a look at yourself.

The phone call isn't his finest hour, but from his book and appearances in the media he comes across as thoughtful, articulate and intelligent.

He probably has about 10 takes before he gets it right, had a ghost writer, for sure, for his book and, in my opinion, sounds incredibly boring and monosyllabic in television or radio... And i know i am far from alone in those thoughts.

As for being intelligent? Depends how you define it. He sounds rather dim to me.

I would recommend the book, he's a working class lad that's done well. He's never had an agent, loves Man United and Manchester. He never went to a Russell group university or Eton but he's an intelligent man. As for his analysis, ok that's your opinion on how he sounds, what about what he's saying? Gordon Brown sounds monosyllabic but he's an intelligent man.

I do not doubt his football prowess. Great servant for Man Utd. My view is not just from that phone call, its his TV performances and i never really liked his sort of dirty style of play.. Or how he came across.. Theres more than one side to everyone. It just stuck with me when he played. Good player though, no question.

Gordon Brown sounds a lot more intelligent in my view.

I didn't say you did doubt his football prowess! One theme from the book which is of particular interest to me is his emphasis on hard work. He grew up playing with Giggs, Scholes, Becks etc and acknowledged he wasn't as talented so made up for it in hard work. It's a great message as there really is no substitute to hard work in any walk of life. One of the better football books I've read, cheap on kindle too.

As for Brown, I only used him as people seemed to suggest he wasn't magnetic or charismatic enough in the 2010 campaign, which was probably true. His speech on Scottish indy-ref is something to behold.. But that's for another thread.

The phonecall makes him sound bad, but maybe those kids had been leaving messages, winding him up for ages. Also, if his number gets out that's not good - a security risk even given how he's regarded by fans of other clubs. Also lots of hassle to change his number.

Gordon Brown's biggest legacy, before that speech, was to famously sell a significant portion of our gold reserves when the price was at a generational low point. Timing never was his strong point but he did partially redeem himself with that indy speech.

I know you didn't say u doubted Neville's prowess! I was just making the point!

I'll bear the book in mind!

I said your attitude, in this particular situation, was horrible and arrogant, not you.

Your initial comment was nothing to do with him swearing at a 'junior' on the phone. It was to do with his stupidity at never having heard of Millfield School. Could that comment be any more snobbish? If anyone's on a horse, that would be you.

As for your secondary criticism, i'd hardly classify the lad as a junior and a few f-bombs down the phone is hardly going to scar him for life. I think if anything he was more scared at GN's comment about passing his number onto the police.

I agree with your last sentence.

The Millfield School remark, at least the way i said it or meant it but as often happens these things get lost in interpretation, was said in a fairly lighthearted way.
