I'm on vacation in California and thought that it would be nice with a pint at Kevin Mabbutts restaurant in Santa Fe. When I came to the place I saw it was ongoing renovation work there. I went inside and asked a lady if Kevin was there. She said she was the new owner of the place and didn't know anything about the previous owner. Does anyone know anything about Kevin's plans, retirement? Move back to England?

What the hell is the video showing City v Gas below that link mate?...watched it thinking 'how crap were both teams back then' then realised it must be something like fans playing?

I thought they were playing on an icy pitch?

Looking at the kit it was around 81-82 which is a time when we weren't too good to be fair. Too many spectators for it to be fans playing, unless it's some kind of half time kickabout? The number of people wandering up and down the Dolman steps might indicate that.

I was there that day at Old Trafford. United missed a penalty too, one of the Greenhoffs. Had my first ever curry on the way home to celebrate. Happy daze!!

Apart from a few obvious exceptions (e.g. Arsenal & Coventry and a few others) we very often didn't take large numbers away in the old First Division days.

Well not noticeably anyway, though many City fans - like our group - may simply have gone in in the first turnstile they came to, rather than trying to find the away end, which often wasn't segregated anyway. It wasn't a good idea to look indecisive around the turnstiles, or appear unfamiliar with the ground.

I certainly remember being at places like Everton and Man. City - even Aston Villa - and looking over to the away section to see the City support appearing very small.

I wasn't at the Mabbutt match but was at OT the season before, where, although being careful to avoid the Stretford End, we came a cropper after inadvertently sidling in to the worst possible section of the ground which, unbeknown to us, was home to United's main hooligan section. A very large one it was too.

Thing to remember is going away in those days was very different to now, you had to keep your head down at many grounds where you were very likely to get attacked if you were even suspected of supporting the opposition, whether inside the stadium or in the surrounding streets. I imagine that put a lot of City fans off, particularly after the first season up when the novelty of First Division football, and visiting famous old grounds, had worn off.

NTTB and I were at many games of the period...although I have never met the bloke! And I have got to say his points about really not having the big away support are pretty good from my recollection. There are a lot of games I can remember where we were pretty sparse and one I will never forget in the North Stand at Chelsea where about 100 had to stand their ground as the coppers allowed a steaming mob to charge and then threatened to arrest anyone trying to get out. (I scuffed up my first pair of Doc Martins in that one!..) Although there were quite a few late coach's that day. Charlie Cooke scored the winner for them incidentally.

Other sparse turn outs included anything North of Birmingham and anything west of QPR..... In those days weather reports were shit so being stuck somewhere with a match off was regular.

Other Places I have been attacked cica 76-80 without the help of anyone much including all firms and aged raconteurs, include WHU, Villa, Sunderland and Everton among others! Just for the record!!

this is way before my time, but i did ask a similar question about our away following on a different page. what were the numbers like to, say, midlands clubs - cpl of thousand at best? i thought this was at the height of the 'football special' and had always assumed we would be taking massive followings everywhere so was surprised when i learned we did not. Also, and directed to all the 'old lot' on here, what were our away followings BEFORE div 1?

I didn't go away very often in those days , not long started work. I just googled to see my first away game, October 30th 1976 at Derby. Supporters coach stalled and they asked us for a bump start ! It was also a strange start to away games, seeing locals bolting doors over their windows in case of trouble !!! There were only a few there , not sure how many and as a 16 year old coming out with City and Derby facing off was, umm interesting.. Coventry was awesome, QPR when the CATS started was a good following but I went more and more as we got worse and worse. Therapy would have been cheaper !

I was there as a 12 year old with my late Father.

I remember going up on CATS, parking in Old Trafford cricket ground, where a senior policeman came on the coach to tell us to wait outside the ground, after the game, for an escort back to the coaches, as it was unsafe to return alone. But, there was no escort after the game, and me and Dad walked "alone" back through the crowds, trying hard to conceal the smiles on our faces.

During the game, I remember a Father pulling his Son down back to his seat as he cheered us on. There was not much segregation in the main stand as I recall.

For some reason, the CATS coach we were on, then travelled onto Blackpool to see the illuminations, which was a huge anti-climax to a great day to be a City fan.

Now I tell my 11 year old boys, that City beat the likes of Man Utd, Tottenham, Aresnal & Liverpool back in the day, they can't quite beleive it.

Will they ever see us in the top league of English football again? I doubt it.............

They might see us there (hopefully) but I doubt we`ll be beating the likes of those teams again any time soon.
