The Somerset Rebels speedway team have finished top of that sport's Premier League. :chant6ez:

Downside 1; just like the rugby, the top four teams now have play offs to decide who's Champion;

Downside 2; no automatic promotion to the Elite League. :grr: They would have to apply and hope their finances and off track set up is acceptable, then set about recruiting top riders for next season.

The Elite league is awful...much prefer the Prem. Would love to see SL get involved with the Rebels. Zach being a Bristol lad. They got rid of the Confederate mullarky last year. Now have Somerset symbol. Always a good night out...should be a good meeting in the cup against Sheffield this Friday.

Been 3 times this year and never noticed that they changed it. Still a few flags about though.

@phantom Not a chance fella...in fact it will probably go the other way. Big changes planned for Speedway next season. Talk of making the Elite and Prem the same level. Too many top riders now not riding in the UK, so the elite league is only 'Elite' by name. Too many riders riding for two teams in this country...doubling up. The majority of the Somerset side double up and ride for other teams in the UK...it's all a bit of a farce. 3 of them ride for Swindon as well.

Speedway is on it's last legs in this country. It's a great sport, run by people who imo, have only a short term outlook ,and ruin it every year by changing the rules and regs.

Plus the Governing body is made up of all the Promotors and owners who only have self interest at heart and no one can ever agree...it needs a Governing body that is neutral.

@Welcome To The Jungle Yes...some flags still about mate, but as you can see from the logo, they are now using the somerset or Wessex dragon...can't remember which one it is...especially being a Gloucestershire boy ;-)

Would love SL to get involved with them though...some Millionaire businessmen have taken over Glasgow and transformed them.

Somerset speedway is so poorly promoted in Bristol. Shame...

The advertising should focus on speedways biggest draw...the smell! Waiting for air waves to do a burning methanol scent for the bathroom.

But I'm amazed how many motorcyclists have never been from Bristol. The ride down in the summer is lovely, have a pint upon arrival with some chips so it passes through a few hours, watch the speedway and enjoy the smell then ride home with the sweet sweet smell still on your clothes and up your nostrils. All in th warm summer evening sun.

Did I mention the smell at all?

OK folks, Somerset, having won the League have now made it to the Play off Final.

Wednesday 26th away to Sheffield and the following night, Thursday 27th, the home leg. Tapes up at 7.30pm.

If it was Friday I could go but I can't. I find Autumn speedway a wet and miserable affair, far flung from the long, warm summer nights.

Are they being promoted or staying in the same league?

The three different leagues are ring fenced, so teams normally stay in their current league. However a few years ago P'boro who had been an Elite league team were losing too much money and were in danger of folding. Instead, they voluntarily dropped down a league. Eastbourne dropped down two leagues just to keep going.

The current Elite league is that in name only and there is talk of inviting teams such as Somerset to move up. There is also talk of somehow merging the Elite & Premier Leagues.

We'll just have to wait & see. Daft thing is; in the premier League Rebels have to travel to Berwick and Glasgow. In the Elite league their longest away trips would be Manchester and Kings Lynn. IF rebels came into Bristol Sport, financially they'd be able to match the current Elite league teams and may even have the financial clout to lure some big name riders to Oaktree.

Often wondered if they would buy into it - sadly maybe a bit too far south for Bristol Sport

Just hope they know what they are doing. Leicester moved up and are struggling financially and competively. Belle Vue look a basket case and with Lakeside no more and can't see Eastbourne or Peterborough on list clubsare going under all the time.

With the new converted averages announced Jason Doyle a 13.41 at Swindon team building will be near on impossible,so could well be a very diluted league or give it a month people's averages will drop and teams will be all change.

OOPS! Rebels lost that leg 53-37. Worse still, two of their riders had a fight in the pits. Good thing was that the start was delayed due to the large number of people trying to get in.

First win; Rebels 49 - Leicester 41.

Don't forget; Good Friday, Rebels are away to Poole, tapes up at 11.00am and home to them at 7.30pm. Hopefully the weather will be fine; nothing worse than standing around in the cold.

Sorry folks, both A & H legs of this fixture are off due to waterlogged tracks.

So no need to rush from Barnsley to reach the Oaktree Stadium for 7.30 tapes up this evening.:P
