Birmingham Away

I see Reading ticket details for the following week are announced but not Birmingham yet.  I've never been to St Andrews and had a few questions for people who've been before:

1) How confident can I be (as a non-season ticket holder and non-Forever Bristol member) of getting a ticket? I'm assuming there'll be a decent allocation given the size of the ground?

2) How much time would you suggest allowing before and after the match for getting from train station to ground and vice-versa?

Never been by train but you'll have no problem getting a ticket

Probably worth pointing out that the train line is CLOSED between Gloucester and Birmingham that weekend - so anyone planning on going by train from the South West will be put on a replacement coach service at Gloucester

1. It won't sell out, you'll be fine.

2 [If you're coming from London:] It's definitely walkable up the Digbeth Road and into the centre through the back of the new shopping area where the Bull Ring once was. Probably not dissimilar time required Ashton Gate to Temple Meads, so about 45 minutes is safe either side of the game.

2 [If you're coming from Bristol:] You need to allow precisely zero minutes before and after the match for getting from your train to the match, as the West Midlands Police will be helpfully putting you right back on the same train you got off, and asking you to vacate their precious dump of a city.

Dear me, are Network Rail stalking us this season?

1.9 miles from St Andrews to New St. So depends on how fast you walk. But definitely walkable.

Cheers - am coming from London so hopeful arrival will be fine.  My concern is whether we'll get held at the ground or I'll be otherwise delayed from getting my evening train.  I'm wondering if booking one for 6pm is too risky...

I found the name of it, It is called the Bull Ring Tavern. And then head up the road to the anchor inn, which is a great pub really enjoyed it, it is friendly pub so long as you don't start singing cause you don't want to upset the locals who were playing poker. They had a nice cider in there but i had one too many, and now I can't remember what it was.

I was up and back from London last season (avoiding the round up) and left a few minutes before the end (pretty poor game at the time) and had no issues leaving the area quickly although WMP were already limbering up to get in the way of anything that moved. You'll get back to New Street station for 6pm no problem, and if you aren't fixing a train ticket, there are plenty going back to London.

Regarding pubs, I went in The Woodman before the game last season, in a very recently redeveloped open space/park just East of the centre about 5 minutes from the station, round the corner from where I went to uni years ago. Very friendly (few City and Birmingham in there), good value, big selection including Real Ales, and on the way to the game without being in that dump of an area!

Cheers for this - really helpful.

I've only gone there on the CATs coaches. Last time it was a very slow journey - we stopped at services for what seemed like an eternity and then had to wait for ages for the police escort. Got to the ground about 15 mins before kick off. Train seems a much better option (even with a replacement bus service).

Admittedly I haven't been for 15 years or so, but it used to be third on my list of places behind Millwall and Cardiff where you were most likely to get a slap just for being a City fan. Keep your wits about you if it is still that type of environment.

Remember seeing that on Points West.

They let your tyres down didn't they?

We met Alex Lovell quite a dish and she flirted with me!!

Quite scary in Brum a few of our lads got a hiding, most had it on their toes. Unfortunately they had the wrong mob!!
