Not suggesting there is any truth in this but some people write it off by saying it can't be happening as surely he'd be undergoing an interview somewhere.

Well, perhaps the interview took place a couple of weeks back and Mr Rowett was sounded out then about his salary?

I suspect part of it is people being dubious that the club actually has a contingency plan in place.

Was just looking back through my PM's and said the same re Rowett at the end of January.

Update

Lee Johnson met with Steve Lansdown and Mark Ashton after last nights game. Lee was adamant we would not go down. Ashton has his backing but Steve told Lee that his position is getting to a point where it is untenable. He said he was not prepared to see the team get relegated or look in danger of doing so. He asked Lee to go home and think about things and they met this afternoon. He has been told regardless of his decision he will remain in charge at Newcastle but that does NOT mean his job is safe, Steve Lansdown has met with Keith Millen and invited him to join the coaching staff as a defensive coach. Keith has told him if Lee be relieved of his duties he will be asked to take temporary charge until such a decision is made and would be invited to throw his hat in the ring. Keith said he would not wish to go back into management and will give his offer serious thought over the next 24 hours.

John Pemberton and Dean Holden will leave the club after the Newcastle game as part of a coaching overhaul.

Lee has been offered the opportunity to resign before Monday with the option to remain in a coaching role and to assist Jamie McAlister with the under 23's. Steve feels the head coach role has become to much for him.

In the meantime SL & MA will talk to four targets two are unattached and two with clubs.

Stuart Pearce has been approached and will meet with SL & MA tomorrow.

It is also believe that Phil Brown and Keith Hill are being considered

Tomas Schaaf has also been approached and attended the game last night.

He has been helping with the European scouting and was behind the moves for Jens Hegeler and Fabien Giefer.

Should Millen accept the role he will be expected to assist a new head coach and the new head coach will be able to bring in two other coaches of their choice

You lost all credibility at 'met SL'. He's not in Bristol and wasn't at last nights game.
