Nothing on the Football League's website, but mention on SSN that the EFL Trophy (aka Checkatrade / Johnstons / AWS / LDV etc) may be scrapped after Sunday's Final. :clapping:

Just don't understand this. It was always a nice little distraction, especially if we were mid table. A chance to win a cup for smaller clubs and a trip to Wembley. Should never have arsed around with it

Meanwhile, new rules for Sunday; http://www.efl.com/news/article/2016/checkatrade-trophy-final-flags-and-banners-3646855.aspx

The EFL and Wembley Stadium both recognise that supporters of Coventry City and Oxford United may wish to display flags and banners in support of their team at Sunday's Checkatrade Trophy Final. Guidance around size and suitability of flags and banners has been issued ahead of this weekend’s showpiece to assist visitors in ensuring their flags meet with Health & Safety and WNSL Ground Regulations.

The standard protocol for supporters who wish to bring a flag or a banner into Wembley Stadium without prior permission is that flags must be smaller than 250cm in size at the widest or longest point.

Following a safety and security meeting earlier this month - attended by representatives from Wembley Stadium, the EFL, Coventry City and Oxford United - a decision was made to require supporters to seek prior permission for flags that are larger than 100cm in size at the widest or longest point into the Stadium.

However, the EFL and Wembley Stadium would like to clarify that Wembley Stadium security staff will permit flags or banners purchased through official club channels, that are no bigger than the original stipulation of any flag that is larger than 250cm in size at the widest or longest point.

Supporters have until 5pm on Thursday 30th March to request permission for flags that exceed the stated limits and were not bought through official club channels.

A spokesmen interviewed on SSN reckons attendances have been lower and that allowing in Young players from Prem & Champs teams ruined the format.

Why is it pointless? Great day out for the lesser teams and a team like Walsall who had never played at Wembley. Just stop messing around by including reserve teams.

It was the format this season which ruined the cup, but Coventry taking so many on Sunday will rescue the reputation a bit. To me it certainly has it's place for the lower two leagues to compete in, just get it stripped back to a basic tournament again.

If they scrap it, does that mean we can keep the trophy forever more like Brazil did with the original Jules Rimet trophy?

So buy the cheep ones from street vendors and they are catastrophically unsafe if they are more than 1m wide. But the official club merchandise is perfectly safe up to 2.5m wide. Plus the ones on sale at outlets inside Wembley of course.

Fans being treated like cash points again in the name of safety.

Pointless competition, should have scrapped it years ago.

It's not in the least bit pointless for clubs that win or reach the final. For most of these clubs it's the only "major" cup they will ever win. Some winners have been relatively big teams that have fallen on hard times, but many have also been small clubs that never achieve much - e g Carlise, Chesterfield, Crewe. I've been to all of City's finals and have enjoyed all of them, with the exception of the losses to Mansfield and Stoke. The 1986 win against Bolton, with Terry Cooper as manager, was a fantastic day. (Watch the Terry Cooper interview above) Almost as good was the area final when City came back form a first leg deficit of 0-2 to beat Hereford 3-2. It's not the cup that is a problem, just the awful structure of the early rounds.

Suspect this might be more to do with trying to minimise visible protests by Cov fans against their owners than anything else.

So it's now a worthless tournament that needs to be scrapped because none of the Premiership (reserve) teams got anywhere in it, and/or because they decided to mess about with the format and it pissed people off so they decided to not bother with it? Strange how after one season of the changes it's being scrapped, when it has worked for many years before.

Ok fair enough, nobody really ever took it seriously until they made it through to the latter stages, but the point is that it is a competition that gives the smaller side a chance of realistically winning something. That and a day out at Wembley!!! Did we actually gain much financially from our last cup win? I doubt it, not when you take into consideration of the costs of opening a half empty stadium (lights staffing, refreshments, operational costs) all the way up to the final. Does it matter though? We won a trophy. At Wembley.

Once again, it seems as if it's a case of if it doesn't benefit the Premiership elite, then there is no point of it.

Actually if this season's format has proved one thing, it's that the bigger clubs have a lot of players that aren't actually any better than league 1 or 2 standard. What this in turn means is that in a year or two, there will be an influx of new faces in the lower leagues, that could never make it through at the bigger clubs. Why is that? It's because they buy up anything and everything they can. It just proves how much of a mess this countries national side is in.

Fair play to Coventry and Oxford, hope they have a great day and that they show their respective fans that they care enough to bring a trophy home.

That competition never needed "bigger clubs", all it needed was to be left alone.
