During WWII the landlord of the Colston Arms, St Michaels Hill defied Bristol city council who were very compliant with the American military order that US soldiers be racially segregated in Bristol. He still served them and showed great hospitality. After the war black GIs returning to the USA took their experiences with them and eventually joined with and strengthened the civil rights movement. The Landlord of the the Colston arms certainly gave moral support and encouragement to that movement.
