Totally agree, footballers have generally finished their working day at lunchtime during the week....to then give a few hours to support their communities and the people who help fund their lavish and privileged lifestyles doesn't seem too much to ask to me...

Apologies in advance, the socialist in me has been triggered.....

If you ever visit grounds in working class areas, take Goodison Park and Anfield for example, sociologically you will observe mass-inequality between the community and the clubs.

Many local people, supporting their 'heroes' are struggling to keep going or providing basic needs for themselves and their kids.

It sickens me to see a very select few, who happen to make the grade in a subjective field that society happens to have put on a peda stool be worshipped as demi-gods, and earning enough between them to ease the stress of all around them.  The celebrity culture the same.

The absolute irony of the matter is that this inequality is the route course of the mental health issues, addiction problems etc that this country is totally failing to absolve.  It's actually one the Government and ruling bodies are squeezing ever harder.

Prevention rather than cure; relative equality is the answer.

So no, I don't think "JT" or Chelsea showed much class today.  I think they typified quite a lot.

Watched your clip and saw nothing wrong with his team mates applauding him off. How do you know he organised it. It would seem a pretty normal thing to happen. Has been a great player for Chelsea.

You're absolutely right but not stop mid match to form a guard of honour.

If that's ok maybe we should do the same next season to run the clock down

Genuinely embarrassing. Applaud him off by all means but a guard of honour during a match?

Jesus Christ. Never mind the choreographed barf inducing 26th minute thing.

Take him off on 89 if you want an ovation from the ground but it's a football match FFS not a pantomime.

Not weird at all, it's his squad numbers, and there was nothing on todays game against a team that are already relegated.

Good job he wasn't a goalkeeper then, it would have been the shortest appearance in football history

Don't see the issue myself, and very highly doubt he would've organised it himself.

If you left a job you've been doing for 19 years and been a huge part of the success for the company, you'd go out hugging and high 5'ing a few people.

Exact same thing happen for Lahm and Alonso yesterday.

In the dying minutes, not in the 26th minute having asked the other team to kick the ball out.

what they did yesterday was ridiculous, and that's coming from someone who admires John Terry (the footballer)

I'm just pleased his final game wasn't at Ashton Gate.

26th minute?

I'd have already vacated my seat in the Dolman by then.

You'd be be queuing to get out then Rob?

Barf inducing load of nonsense from a self obsessed cockwomble.

All reports suggest it was all pre-arranged up to and including Chelsea asking Sunderland (from David Moyes's post match interviews) to kick the ball out on the 26th minute.

Anyway, must go know, I've arranged for everyone to stand and applaud me out of the staff canteen.

I generally get a round of applause on the rare occasions I turn up in work!

Would John Atyeo have done this?

By all accounts John Atyeo was a proud Bristolian and a gentleman.

That said, I've heard Harry Dolman upped his wage to stay, following interest from Portsmouth (?).

It is a sad indictment on football and society that these people see themselves as above it all.

Stop the game on 26 minutes everyone, little Jonny needs some final attention.

Pathetic.

For the sake of balance, it was his mate's ex-Doris....

And they both denied it.

And what on earth has it got to do with anyone other than him, his wife and Bridge's ex?  It certainly has nothing to do with Wayne Bridge.

Interesting to read that the bookies have paid out on a number of bets linked to the timing of the substitution:

http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/39999708

Now is the whole event not slightly murkier than it was before,? The bloke is a total fraud and a lying, cheating bar steward. Who's to say that the bets placed are not that innocent if there was some forward planning going on.

@WTFiGO!?! @downendcity @shelts

John Atyeo was born in Dilton Marsh, Wiltshire. I don't think (but don't know) he ever lived in Bristol.

Played twice for Portsmouth as an amateur before joining Bristol City. His dad arranged the contract with Harry Dolman, who visited him at work in a signalbox, where it was agreed JA would be City's highest paid player.

There was interest in JA from big clubs in Europe, but I think he never wanted to go full time as he wanted to keep teaching. I believe that's the reason he never got more than a few caps for England - scored the goal that took us to the 58 (?) world cup finals, but didn't get in the WC squad.

No hard facts, obviously.  Just reputation, smoke, fire etc.

A wholesome reputation is thankfully something that money can not buy you.
