Baldock and Intimidating grounds

Was Curbishley in charge of Charlton when they came down for the FA Cup game the round after we'd beaten Liverpool? If so, and I've said it on here before, it was the most intimidating I can remember the old girl. The place was absolutely toxic that day. It was great!

As for Brighton, again, said it on here before, they've usually bought good numbers with them to the Gate, which always helps the atmosphere. I like to read things like that, always feels a little stale to me nowadays. Nice to know we can still put on a show from time to time

Got arrested that day!

Brighton supporting mate of mine told me that he had heard Baldock was on his way back to City. I can't find any mention on this site. Whilst looking on the Brighton forum I found a thread entitled 'most intimidating grounds'. Not surprisingly Brighton fans listed Millwall most frequently but there were also quite a few mentions of us. I can't recall any problems between City and Brighton fans at Ashton Gate in the past 30 odd years but obviously I've missed stuff based on their memories.

I guess we all glossed over the Baldock coming back bit ?

Maybe unlikely but more likely than Curbishley managing anyone again.

Small point of order: we didn't lose the home game, we lost the replay at the Valley.

Well, bugger me. I'd have put money on us losing the game 0-1

The rumours are/were not true, at least according to the Charlton old boys I know, we are still mocked in certain quarters for perpetuating them.

Which rumours, intimidating or the park incident?

I'm not sure whether Curbishley was their manager at the time, but Charlton equalised after a certain Scott Minto took a throw in to his own player down at the Open End of the ground rather than returning it to City, who had kicked the ball out following an injury - I can't remember if the injury was to a City player or a Charlton player.

I remember when Charlton scored from the cross, SM turned around and shrugged his shoulders in fake innocence when he started receiving abuse from what was then the enclosure.

It is fair to say that the atmosphere did heat up a little bit after.

Ha, good memory! Was in the Dolman, so obviously missed the finer points

Pathetic? It wasn't even that good! I'm pretty sure it was Man U away for the winners?

It most certainly was Man Utd in the next round.

Pathetic was the most forum friendly term I could think of at the time ;)

To be honest I cant imagine he will get many games at that level , I expect the 3 year deal was given so they could sell for an inflated price , around 10 million i daresay .

10m?? He'll see out his contract in the reserves then, they won't find any clubs remotely interested.

Probably not even for a 5th of that price.

A paltry average of 6 goals a season for Baldock since he left City, no reason why his value will have risen at all.

They were certainly true from what I witnessed. A mob got chased round the back of the Wedlocks Pub (as it was then), which to their dismay was a dead end.  I can 100% confirm that there was a chap with a Millwall tattoo across his neck (seen it with my own eyes).  Whether that was just 1 guy who decided to travel of his own accord I don't know, but I'm certain there would've been others.

To add to other comments - yes, that was one highly charged atmosphere that day.

i still have a little chuckle when i think about this game.....or at least the aftermath. One particular 'saarf' Laaaandon gentleman wasn't content with exchanging pleasantries with the Dolman hordes as we left the ground and headed towards the park , this clown decided that spitting through the police cordon at the city supporters would be a great idea ! Now this plan is flawed in one very big way as the bloke his detritus landed on was a legend at the gate for years and any Shire boys reading this will know exactly who i mean . We knew the 'thin blue line' wouldn't last forever and suffice it to say when it dawned on 'spitty'  that he wasn't getting his own individual police escort his face was a 'picture' of panic ....well at least it was for the half a nanosecond before it connected with the biggest ' right hander ' i've seen thrown at the gate !

i believe they call it KARMA ......

Tinnion free kick if my memory serves me. Always remember the pathetic performance in the replay at the old Valley.

My memory serves me as that being a fantastic free kick as a 12 year old sat in the Park End end of  the Williams in 1994.  A treasured early memory.

Charton fans going apeshit face to face, chucking loads of shit and old bill casually moving between us an them to calm things down, also sticks in the mind.

My early memories of AG are largely good and adrenaline filled, I loved the buzz.

It is now largely soulless, dead consumerism :(

It was well on the way in 94!

I was 17 and also in the Open End, that goal and the atmosphere around that time.

Think a big part of it is being young and loving the hostile environment, maybe it seems soulless now as we are older?

Still think Ashton Gate is an intimidating place now on its day.

There were, loads of them....

Well, maybe the Charlton boys didn't like the fact they needed some 'help' that day, but I think they are in the wrong on this one

Ashton Gate is not in the least bit intimidating. Bristol Sport are skilfully creating a top family environment winning Family Excellence Awards . Its one of the few grounds where fans of both clubs  mingle together in a fan village. In the future there will be there will be stands like there are at Fulham where home and away fans can watch the game together.

But you're not an away fan

Remember they had Carl Leaburn up front who was putting himself about a bit, to say the least, which didn't endear him to the home crowd. For years after that game and the furore over their goal, our fanzines of the time referred to Minto as 'Snott Vimto'.

Maybe it's because I was an innocent, oblivious 10 year old at the time, but I had absolutely no idea until years later that there was a load of trouble after the game.

Excepting when we play:-

Cardiff

Millwall

Leeds

Villa

Brum

Wolves

Forest

Boro

QPR

Sheff Utd

...

Lummydaze, they can't even allow away fans on to the corporate hospitality bar balcony without it kicking off big time.

AG is still initimidating when it wants to be.
