Press conference

I think I'm right in saying if we sell him without him requesting a transfer we would have to pay x% of his contract. Having his agent sow the seeds discreetly  (or maybe not so discreetly as it seems here) with clubs who have been linked they can gain more financially.

The other advantage for the player is if the move doesn't come off he can claim he never wanted to leave, thus saving himself grief from the fans. I'm not saying this is the case, but it's a possibility.

The club wanting to sell is, in my opinion, less likely, given how highly Flint is regarded by pundits and other mangers. Add that to the new contract he's signed makes me think it less likely we want shot. Anything else makes Mark Ashton appear less than competent. Now you may say we gave him the contract to maximise his sale value,  but given the fact we signed him up until 2020 would mean we needed to pay him off at a higher rate.

The one plus point for the club is they took a proactive approach and signed Baker avoiding the debacle of last season and Kodjia. If he stays or goes I don't think we'll ever really know the truth. Roll on September so we can concentrate on the players we have and not have to speculate on the  comings and goings.

Well-thought arguments here. A couple of things though: by giving Flint a new contract the club can hold out for more money when they sell, that's why they offered him a new contract. The decision to sell Flint has been made some time ago (by Lee and Mark), that's why Baker was bought. Flint did not ask for a move.

Not really imo., perhaps he's satisfied being a natural leader on the pitch but doesn't welcome the other/off field responsibilities that might go with being captain.

After all, he wouldn't have to change his game at all, he's basically a captain every time he plays, bar wearing the armband and having the title.

True, the modern captain's role isn't for everyone. Forgot about the other things that come with it.

Bailey Wright seems more the sort to relish that sort of role. I say all this just from the snippets we see in the media but it's definitely the impression I get.

If it were me though as manager, I'd doubt someone's drive and winning mentality if they didn't want to be captain.

All hearsay though, we don't know whether Flint was even offered captaincy.

At 23 Joey is already closing in on 200 appearances. He's got a chance to become a City legend if he sticks with us long term

Yep.

Loyalty is what motivates almost all footballers - money doesn't come into it.

I'm not ITK, but simply processing the various (and there are a lot) versions of events that I've seen (not necessarily all posted publicly), I have a feeling the truth is probably one which technically satisfies both versions of events, but certainly doesn't admonish the club in the way some are using today's video to do.

At a guess from piecing together storylines: Flint is another of the players to fallen out with the manager, principally because he cares a lot about City, as has long been evidenced by his on-field demeanour. He was someone who was loyal to the promotion team and Cotterill in particular, and never truly settled under Jonhson.

When the summer came round, both sides knew he would be considering his options. Now suppose for a minute there is a much earlier unreported offer this summer, that wasn't communicated to Flint. He may feel betrayed in addition to his frustration at the direction of the club. Now he does want out but the club hold all the cards.

In this situation you have someone who dearly loves the club (so people saying that are correct) but has run out of the patience with those in charge. You also have a club that doesn't want to sell (so people saying that are correct), but has pushed the player to the brink and ultimately now has to and is engineering a sale (see: Baker).

This is conjecture of course, but I can't find a better way to reconcile everything I've read and heard. Usually the truth is somewhere in the middle.

You may well be correct. Like you I'm certainly not ITK. But I would suggest LJ cares more about City than Flint does, I also wonder why Flint signed a new contract knowing LJ was at the helm, if he was unhappy with that ( I've not checked, though I'm fairly sure he signed when LJ was in charge). Ultimately it's all conjecture. COYR

I think he's one of those players that is 100% focused on his own game that means he wouldn't make a great pick.  @RedM has allured to him in the past being in the zone pre match and barely talking to anyone.. that's not what you need from a captain.  Not saying that's a bad thing just that it doesn't suit the role

my thoughts exactly

Have tried to watch the video of Press Conference on BCTV but it wants me to login although it says "Free to Watch", anyone else had this?

No-one else had an issue. Don't forget all that free porn download counts and perhaps your internet provider has acted in your best interest and applied your data limit?

Just sayin'.

Yeah had same issue, just watch it through the latest news and not the Player.

Is the decision money driven (ie he's at the peak of his value right now and we have to cash in now) or for other reasons?

I don't know the reason, but probably you are right. Flint did not ask for a move, that's certain.
