Parallels with BS3? I think @Olé lives in New Cross (not sure if he`s the only living boy there or not!) and has posted quite a bit about their plight on here.

I've got to be honest, I have an unusual soft spot for Millwall now. By London standards the area is decent, a lot like Bedminster, you're in touch with reality. I drink in their locals and they're (mostly) a very decent lot (interesting exception the lad who wanted me to bring him down tomorrow and get him in the home end - now banned from my local for dealing). I was in the Five Bells last Friday the night before their last home game (long term City graffiti in one of the toilets) but even by Millwall standards the place was deader than I've ever remembered it as far as proper football lot is concerned. A lot of them have been displaced and live out Eltham and other places.

Just those locals who still live at the bottom of the Old Kent Road on the fringes of the industrial estate (the poorest part of the area) are Millwall, although increasingly displaced by even poorer African and South Americans. I think BS3 is safe, on a relative basis BS3 and SE14 are proportionately valuable real estate for their city, the big difference is the new communities in SE14 have little interest in Millwall, whether culturally or intellectually. I feel really sorry for the old timers who are still around. It is a tough fight to justify it as 'home'. BS3 is not the same, I *think* with a few exceptions, most old and new in BS3 are still prepared to support their local football team?

I travelled down today as I didn't fancy mixing it with them on the trains tomorrow and didn't fancy leaving my car in the area over the weekend (tyres slashed over the summer). If I'm honest I probably have no idea about their following, the ones still in New Cross do not travel, in fact they barely go to home games. They're definitely a club going through a battle to maintain an identity and a traditional area. They can get to **** tomorrow but I wish them only success maintaining their heritage and their place in South London. They're a proper football club and like most places in England, London is otherwise too full of people happy to jump on Premiership bandwagons.

Always love going to Millwall including the old ground, wish them all the best as a club after today of course.

I agree, it would be a nice first step if they would stop fighting the police on the way to the ground then they may be allowed a little more freedom when travelling.

When they played us last season, the police kept them kettled in a pub long enough to ensure that they missed the first 30 minutes of the game.  I think I'd probably be a bit lairy if that happened to me when there was so much riding on the outcome.

Whilst I appreciate they are like all clubs largely supported by loyal and decent fans, I cannot understand why the police give their games a safety certificate. the lunatic fringe make every match a high possibility of serious public disorder, and therefore I cant understand why the club is not shut down. I feel very sorry for what I assume are the vast majority of Millwall fans, who I imagine just want to watch football.

Assumed they would have brought significantly more tbh.

Millwall...I don't know what to make of them tbh. @Olé definitely posts some interesting stuff on them and the area generally.

Someone other day told me they (by which I mean the fans not the club) have, or had, a reputation for far rightness. Is that badly outdated? Or a mere tiny element? Again I dunno. Even taking that aside they get kettled etc (never knew was so frequent) for a reason.

It does. I think Wembley was the final straw for the owners - especially when they`re in this battle with Lewisham Council and their `preferred developers` to avoid having a compulsory purchase order slapped on The Den. They need public support for that and the borough is becoming increasingly gentrified so it`s getting more and more difficult to get that as a lot of their core support has moved out to Kent.

Oh no-does this mean I need to grow a beard for the return fixture??.....

So in contrast to their self-heralded anthem - somebody does actually like them.  And I bet they'd care about it, too!

Disappointed in that. Thought they might of sold out their allocation.

Not that much of a surprise - 1200 is about what you'd expect from Millwall who have rarely brought large numbers to AG.

The powers that be at AG have allocated far too many seats to away fans, and bar a few games there will be swathes of empty seats in the Atyeo this season.

No City fan will Be minus a seat re: away supporters/atyeo stand....plenty for all that want one-But it will for certain fixtures add revenue/atmosphere..

Really? That's unacceptable behaviour from the police, and a surefire way to get their backs up enough to stir trouble. I remember a similar thing happening to us at QPR in our nearly season. The 5 minute walk from White City to the ground took about 30 minutes thanks to a provocatively slow police escort that ensured we got into the ground 30 minutes late. Disgraceful.

It is clearly much easier securitywise whilst the game is going on to have the away fans isolated in a single seperated stand if there is the capacity there for it. Until we are at the point where we are close to selling out the other stands on a consistant basis empty seats in the away end are irrelevant.

A friend of mine who captains a dive live-aboard out of Cayman is a Millwall fan and told me of one visit to AG back in the 1980s: they were being marched from Temple Meads to the ground, and were doing the usual chants etc. The cordon passed a guy on the pavement who was selling Socialist Worker or similar.

The guy mistook the cordon for some protest march and asked one of the Millwall lads what they were marching in support of. The Millwall supporter replied with "equal rights for paedophiles" and that chant got picked up by the rest of them.

My friend hopes there is some middle aged ex-Socialist Worker seller still dining out on a story of the most bizarre protest march he ever encountered.
