Top Robin

Team for tonight (Merged)

Recommended Posts

Tonight would be perfect time to just try out something different in the centre of midfield. Pack and Smith have been overrun in recent games so a new pairing for this game may just unveil something that we have been missing. Suggestions welcome.

hence the need for a good defensive midfielder who can break up play, we just don't have one

All our central midfielders are similar. Nobody carries any creativity or goal threat. It's ridiculous. Should have been priority. Johnson has his dad's obsession with strikers.

Would like to see some sort of a plan B trial, maybe a 4-3-3:

Fielding

Vyner Flint Hegeler Magnússon

Bronwhill O'Neil Smith

Eliasson Diedhiou Pato

I'd definitely rest Diedhiou. He looked exhausted on Saturday and I think two games in a week is something he needs to get used to. Why not play Hinds, give him a chance to build on his Plymouth performance.

Having thought about it, we have Villa on Friday so probably a few rested and a load of changes for tonight.

Similar to what others are saying;

.........Lucic or Fielding

Vyner Flint Hegeler Magnússon

Eliasson O'Neil Brownhill O'Dowda

........Hinds Diedhiou

A bit soon for Taylor to have a few minutes ?

Agree with most here - possibly shelving a cup run chance goes against the grain

But Villa 72 hrs later is looking like a marker game for us so I'd pick my side for Friday and form a side for tonight from what's left in the squad

We dont have any creative ones either, which makes me wonder what are our midfielders actually good at?

Would like to see Morrell get a game. Thought he looked very confident and tidy on the ball when he came on against Plymouth...although admittedly we were several goals ahead already.

Good shout

Pato, O'Dowda, Ellison (given the chance) all creative all will create given the chance, we have no defensive midfielder full stop, I've name 3 creative players in midfield but can't name one who can break up play and protect the back 4

Lucic

Vyner

Flint

Mags

Golbourne

O'Dowda

O'Neil

Hegeler

Eliasson

Hinds

Fammy

Apart from Fammy needing a goal or two for confidence, and our other lack of strikers I wouldn't risk anyone who will play against Villa.

Looked tired Saturday and we definitely need him Friday so I'd  not be playing him personally

Maybe have him on the bench for a 10 minute punt at the end if we are level

They're all used as wide players though, in the middle (Pack, Smith, O'Neil and Hegeler) we have a real glut of defensively minded midfielders. That's important of course but can't see that lot getting many goals.

Think we need someone who's also more of an attacking threat.. someone in the same style as Irvine or Hourihane would be great.

I hear ya. Was thinking more in the CM position Pack Hegeler Smith GON Brownhill are hardly the most prolific / creative bunch and if you're saying they cant defend either.... its a pretty bland CM

I agree Bob. But isn't it a shame that we're already having to think like that. I always get my hopes up about a good cup run (as we mostly all do id imagine) and they always seem to get quashed over the last few years.  Here's hoping whatever team goes out tonight can cause a surprise and pose LJ some headaches for Fridays selection.

Exactly. Lukic worries the crap out of me, but I hope he can change that

ill be amazed if Flint doesn't start as well as Magnússon. Hinds will feature at some point and COD should be in. I'm a fan of Vyner and Kelly and GON needs pitch time. All in all we have a very decent second 11, some may say in some areas better than the first 11 particularly since the second half at Birmingham

Depressingly acurate.

Did LJ learn nothing from Paul Hartley?

Have to say I'm fed up with it year in year out. I can remember some great keepers, left backs, wingers and strikers. But midfield? Nah. We bypass the midfield. We don't score enough goals from the midfield. We don't win enough tackles in the midfield. It's been going on for far too long. Manager after manager.

Alot of people are putting Fammy in, he doesnt look fully fit anyway, so after Saturday, I cant see him playing tonight and again 72 hours later.

The spirit of Sir Gerry would like a word.

I'd like to see (but suspect I won't);

Lucic

Vyner Flint Mags Golbourne

Hegeler O'Neil Brownhill

O'Dowda Hinds Eliasson

Subs: Kelly, Taylor, Reid, Morrell, Moore, Paterson, Fielding

Can't imagine Watford putting out a full strength side either, so we could possibly benefit from that if we don't weaken our own chances too much by overly concentrating on the Villa game... of course we know changes will be made but I hope we intend to 'go for it' tonight never the less...

OK ,for once, its our turn to ....'.'MIND THE GAP'  at Watford tonight and it is a long shot (I'm thinking 3-1 defeat) but maybe just maybe, if we are up for it , we can bridge that Gap.. & hope for a cash generating glamour tie in the next round.. :fingerscrossed:

(if we must lose tonight then for the sake of the prediction league I'd take a 3-1 reverse with Flint scoring for us and 1-1 at half time... but forget that, lets Mind (and bridge) that bloody Watford Gap and progress. :city:)
