Sunderland is very much orientated around real ale pubs such as The Peacock, Fitzgeralds, The Isis, Dun Cow etc and places that do gins, cocktails etc like Revolution, Libby Mays, Poetic License (Seafront tho) and Sams Bar . There's also places like The Rabbit and No2 Church Lane that specialise in food and drink. There's not really any themed bars like what Sam Jacks was other than the usual sports bars/pubs. Try the Colliery Tavern. For those getting the Metro over from Newcastle it's a short walk from the Stadium of Light Metro station and it's the nearest pub to the away end (other than the bar at the Hilton hotel). It's very away fan friendly and has a beer tent and beer van outside to cater for the numbers. There's also a decent burger van for scran. Don't act like bellends though, the 'Taverners' don't suffer fools gladly!
Sunlun1985
Best to get off the metro in the city centre (S'land or Park Lane) for the pubs. It's around a 15 minute walk over the bridge to the SOL from the city centre.
