Cardiff....can't pass, won't pass...

...a fiend of mine pointed this out to me today.

LJ mentioned what to expect from Cardiff, who have one of the lowest 'ball in play' stats.

They have the worst passing accuracy in the Championship....yet the best expected goals ratio. We are the second best in the league.

All explained in these two articles...worth a read. Seems direct football is still going strong, in the form of the dinosaur Warnock.

It'll be interesting to see two teams pitting their wits against one another, in very different styles.

They appear to be the same article. To be honest I fancy our back for in a physical game, I wonder how much change they will get out of us if they do play a direct game.

Direct football has historically been the statistically best way to score goals. Sam Allardyce noticed this and has adopted the tactics ever since, with great success. Those who have played football in defence, will know that being battered with long balls for 90 minutes is anything but fun, and will almost certainly lead to mistakes here and there.

My apologies....edited for you. Both articles there now.

We certainly aren't a pitty-patty side. Those stats reflect that, at our best, we play fast, high-risk counter-attacking football, rather than safe, pass it endlessly back-and-forth around the half-way line stuff. It's been effective overall so far. When it's not clicking, which hasn't been often, it's not so easy on the eye.

As for "can't pass, won't pass" perhaps go to 35 seconds below.

Or 1:24 here:

I'll counter that with Tomlins 'pass' at 54 seconds wtf!!!! ;-)

I don’t really want to get into the Warnock, love him or hate him, debate but I think it’s wrong for people to keep calling him a dinosaur. There are plenty of so called modern progressive managers who talk a good game but achieve very little. At least with Warnock his teams usually achieve more than they should. Some of City’s recent “modern” managers were dire - e g McInness and SoD and, in the case of SoD, he couldn’t even talk a good game. With SoD I’m sure the pass accuracy must have been high because the plan seemed to be for the back four to continually pass the ball sideways between themselves, before kicking it long. Overall a high pass accuracy, but useless

People do what they are best at.

Warnock wants a game that is disrupted with the ball in play as little as possible, lots of off the ball pulling, nudging and minor fouling that the officials won't see and with the home fans frustrated that the game doesn't flow due to his anti football.

He will, along with his backroom staff, who like a few players follow him from club to club, chip away repeatedly before, during and after at the officials to get away with as much as possible.

He is good at it, successful with it but his style makes Russell Osman's look like Pep's and he is a totally obnoxious****.

There's nothing wrong with direct football so long as it goes somewhere. 3 long but accurate passes to score a quick breakaway goal is better than 30 that go nowhere.

The problem is when the long passes are not aimed so much as hit forward in hope. Clearly whilst Cardiff don't make many passes, the ones they do make are creating a lot of good quality chances. It's going to be a very difficult game for our back four.

This is exactly how the game will be on Saturday, very disjointed, city not able to get the ball moving due to Cardiff being in our faces etc. I expect warnock and co to bully the officials into giving lots of fouls.

We will need to win ugly again on Saturday if we are to overcome Cardiff.

So is it someone you don’t like who pointed it out or does he just always beat you at pool when you go out for a pint together?

There is a difference between a long pass and simply hoofing it up field. A long diagonal ball into the channels is a different art form to aiming for a target man down the middle.

Colin is good at what he does but I have to admit I haven't seen anything of Cardiff other than highlights this season- From those they don't look like a hoof ball team at all, but direct and pacy.

However a leopard rarely changes his spots and the amount of Colin teams I've seen playing against us using the percentage game of hoofing it up field and hoping to win a dead ball /throw in (annoyingly with a good number of successful results) I won't be surprised if this is the case tomorrow.

Its not actually true because of the way people like football analysts Hughes and Reep who influenced English football and directed the FA compiled their data. Teams that can regularly keep possession for more than eight passes score more goals historically.

English teams who followed Hughes and Reep along with the FA and its blueprint for football condemned much of English football to failure.

I think we have one of the best defenders in the English leagues at defending the long ball. Aden Flint.

So I would welcome this long ball approach.

If Mags playing, not so much.
