Section 82 stewarding yesterday

Can anyone please enlighten me to what that was all about yesterday. Last few games I've noticed they've tightened up on the strictness of it to stop other fans from other areas sneaking in which is fair enough but its now beyond a joke. Walking up to find a seat my ticket got checked three times from different stewards which they all seen the previous steward check. The amount of police as well in the middle, surly its all a bit over kill now.

I took a pic of the police at half time. It did get my back up a bit. Stewards constantly move people if they stand in the aisles, but the cops did it for most of the game yesterday.

Completely unnecessary for the area of the ground, anyone would've thought we was the away section by pictures

I guess the issue is that if anyone does get into that area without having an appropriate ticket for that area are more likely to cause a  bit more of a problem when asked to move. And it’s more of deterrent if they know their tickets will be checked.

It only takes one person who has had a few beers on board to sit / stand in someone else’s space for it all to kick off if they are required to move by someone other than a steward.

Like it or not but the area will attract people who think they can do anything they want there as it’s a more noisy area etc but that’s not the case, the people that have their tickets there are there to enjoy the game & to make a decent atmosphere for everyone to enjoy not for their own selfishness.

could they make the standing area larger next year if so popular?

How about the atyeo ? Fans of both clubs mix in the fans village so allocate away teams part of the lower Lansdown. Watching 3000 Cardiff in there yesterday brought home how potent that could be.

A positive note for one of the stewards yesterday (at the back of S82).

It appeared that this guy was new to the job, because he was asking a lot of questions of his nearby colleague.

This was a bloke who had a great time. He was clapping and shuffling around to "Aden Flint is having a party", and was celebrating like a fan when we scored.

Good on him, I thought.

(he will probably get sacked now for not paying enough attention to the crowd / doing his job properly)

Aha.

But mixed fans are ok as long as they’re in areas where they can spend even more money.

Segregation doesn’t count then. Put the same fans together to watch a game, sing Bread of Heaven or wave coloured paper at each other?

**** me. Then we need to step in.

Spotted him like, started tapping his head when the players came over an all :laughcont:

Believe it or not, lots of stewards are in fact fans of the home side. (Surprise us I hear people say)!

However, naturally stewards aren't allowed to show any let's say celebration or such if the home team scores- even if they are in home ends, and even if they are a fan of the home side-who would that possibly offend??

Mad, I know. It's probably some sort of central guideline eh.

Stewarding is one thing, having a police presence is the section is entirely another.

Where I was stood, after about 10 minutes I felt something behind me and turned to find a policeman, fully armed with large baton and riot mask hanging from his hip.
I asked him politely why he was in here and standing so close to me.  His response was "just watch the game pal".
I then politely informed him that I found it difficult to relax and watch the game whilst I could feel his helmet touching my backside.  So I asked if he could kindly move away from me, which he did.

I see no reason why there should be police with riot helmets in the home section.  There are plenty of stewards to deal with any ticket checks and any strays.  No need to have the robocops too.  Perhaps they'd have been better off deployed near the warehouse where a group of City fans confronted and chased a group of Cardiff fans, leading the Cardiff fans to run into the warehouse and close the shutters.  Maybe, just maybe, the police would have been more useful at that confrontation, rather than provocatively standing between home fans.

Slim. Is this the first time you've been uncomfortable with a helmet touching your backside?

I think that, excluding segregation lines and the away end if a major and potentially volatile following (e.g. Cardiff, Leeds) police should only be in stands if directed say by a stand manager or the safety officer.

Otherwise they should be in a roving role around the ground and with a fairly lowkey presence. Stewards only in home stands, police assistance only directed if necessary.

Yeah, but then 'super-cop' Tactical Officer baton swinger might actually have to do some work rather than lumping a Millwall fan, and then hiding behind his fellow officers.

He didn't seem the sort to have the desire to confront someone who would give it back and probably more.

Not that I condone, or approve violence against the Police - I most certainly don't.

But make no mistake - this is A+S making a point - you complain about us, we will make the next couple of weeks difficult.

I guarantee that this was an organised response to the incident a month back where one of 'their own' got into trouble.

Police were deployed in psu overalls at the game yesterday as normal deployment in a high risk game.

their helmets need to be carried with them inside the ground and are carried on belts dangling , unfortunately there is nowhere else to carry them!

there were no Cardiff fans chased into a warehouse that I have been made aware of or saw. I was stood directly outside the warehouse post match and did not see any chasing going on!!

An escort to a group of Cardiff fans  was provided both to and from temple meads . Police horses and other officers assisted in this escort .

there was an incident at the end of the game behind the atyeo stand where 1 Cardiff was arrested. Coins and bottles were thrown between groups of fans for which officers would have had to then put these helmets on had it continued. However we very quickly gained control and this was not needed.

there was also an incident in Ashton terrace where another Cardiff fan was arrested.

both have been charged to court with public order offences

a third Male from Bristol City was also arrested at half time for being drunk and abusive to stewards . He has also been charged to court

@JulieH

Was that last post, 3rd male being charged with drunken and abusive words/conduct the reason police went into the Dolman?

No unfortunately not.

i understand that some city fans had reported a group of males in the dolman they thought were Cardiff fans,  so we assisted in having a chat with them!

they weren’t, just not regulars, so all good .

@JulieH can I ask why they were instructed to stand where they did yesterday? In the middle of a gangway, miles from any away fans, so no chance of a flash point, and where fans are regularly asked to move away from by stewards if they linger there. Was just a tad annoying and a bit hypocritical given how fans get treated if they stand there for any length of time. My picture highlights what I mean :)

Hi Julie, how come there were around 15 police officers amongst the small section of blocks S25-S27 in the home end, yet in an away end of 3000 Cardiff fans the police presence was, by my count, 0?

There were around 8 police officers located between the Atyeo and West Stand, though these were miles away from any Cardiff fans and out of the stand itself. I just find it very very odd and I'm not sure what you, or whoever makes these decisions, are anticipating to happen in blocks S25-S27. I wanted to politely ask some of the officers myself but felt that could have ended horribly as the batons were out.

None of which explains why there was a need for police officers to stand amongst home supporters.

There have been some problems with this area whereby there have been more fans than seats, this has led to overcrowding and persons getting inured when goals scored.

stewards have been increased in this area as I am sure you have all noticed in an effort to ensure the area continues to remain safe for everyone. We have been used to assist the stewards in this.

There has been some occasions where some fans have not been as conooerative as others and this has led to issues whereby stewards have not been able to do their jobs.

i have seen a improvement in the area with this issue and we continue to speak to the club on a match by match basis regarding deployment of police in this area.

Not answering one question, why were the police blocking the isles? Any fans standing there for a few seconds get told to move by stewards, which fans do so. No need for police at all this is totally down to imtimidation towards fans.
