Isn't Downing left footed ?

Of course.  But once Hörður started showing him inside, he instantly seemed to lose his effectiveness. I saw joe speak to him during an injury break juat after he had bean well beaten outside a couple of times.

For me, he looks more comfortable at CB than LB and his long throws are great. Not manycan get a long throw beyond the back post. if

I think that is the point I am trying to make. Downing was kept quiet all game and he ended up getting subbed.

That's down to Hordurs play.

About where I am which is why i would rather have a proper left back in that position. I am not the biggest fan of Wright either. I think those two need to improve if we are going to be critical.

Wright's ball for Joe's goal today was mm perfect.... but he's not usually the best past the half way line. Brilliant defensively though.

Thanks goodness, I also thought this was a thread to knock the lad, I’m glad it’s not.

The fact is that he’s played a handful of senior games in the championship, a league that a hugely experienced player like Pisano’s says is rediculous for its pace and physicality. He will learn from his mistakes, and yep, he may cost us more goals, but, please remember what Flint, possibly the most effective centre back in this crazy league, looked like when he came here...

keep learning.

What???  Close to MOM? Let too many crosses be delivered by standing off Downing. Don't know which match you were watching. I am not slagging off Maggs as he is doing his best playing out of position.

Downing had such joy that he had to be subbed  ?

Playing out of position my arse. You clearly were not watching the same match as me. He is growing on me big time. Top player Magners.

Playing out of position?

You do know that he is now Iceland's first choice left back?

If he went in goal he would be playing out of position, but he definitely isn't at present...

I got to say I barely noticed Downing until he got subbed and a few round me said they hadn`t realised he was playing. Same with Braithwaite, I was expecting great things from him but he hardly had a kick - mostly down to our midfield it has to be said.

Sorry!!?? Not. The. Biggest. Fan. Of. Wright.

Read that back slowly. You actually wrote it.  Wright is the difference between 3rd and 13th.

If you ask him to run through a brick wall, he'll reply "what do I do when I get on the other side"?

He's been fantastic and one of our best players.  Mostly for stuff he does off the ball.  Pray he doesn't get injured.

He was solid enough but he's not a full back and never overlaps. Did well  for a player playing out of position and in a position that he isn't suited too.   Still, he's getting game time and that will help him if we get any injuries or, worst case scenario, lose Aden Flint in the January window.  Given he's not a natural full back and doesn't really venture forward much it was a credit to Joe Bryan that he played so well on the left with a MOTM performance.

City are doing well given we have no natural full-backs at he moment.  Bailey Wright is another who isn't a natural full back but he was very solid and I was surprised to see how far forward he played in the second half. With four centre backs , Marlon Pack plus Djuric when he is on then we will deal well with aerial threats. Also, as he showed with his goal Joe is good in the air to add to the pluses of being two footed and strong in the tackle.

Thought he was decent; not spectacularly good or bad. Made a vital interception in the first half otherwise 'Boro were through on goal (think it was a run from Troare who got tackled but the ball went past Baker and Mags swept it up). The one thing I noticed was that he was allowing Downing too much space and showing him inside onto his left foot which was dangerous. Downing doesn't have the legs and he's primarily left footed so he wants to cut in and he played some dangerous balls in from doing that, Mags should've showed him wide and get Bryan to track Christie on the underlap, other than that he was good. I watched the Hull game back last night and he was fantastic so it's good to see him kick on

It’s pretty common to show a player inside, irrespective of his stronger foot, as angles get closed as does space.

Thought Hörður was decent enough tonight.  He made a couple of very important interception, and some important headers (not the og :P, which just skimmed off of the player in front of him).  Baker had a very quiet game tonight, mainly because of our dominance.

Let’s hope that’s the best ball by an Aussie tonight

Same here. I didn't realise Downing  was playing until he was subbed.

I thought Magnússon was decent tonight.

Yeah, we have old fashion defenders now to compliment our attacking silky skills.

Wright and Baker would smash anyone in there way. What I love about them is there 19.70s attitude to taking attackers out!!!!!

I'm glad he played well although when I saw the OG go in I said to my missus "I'm going to get some crap here!"

Played better against Hull, but for me the crucial thing was that after the OG, he kept on trying - last year his head would have dropped and LJ would probably have subbed him.

I think LJ has a lot more belief in him than some on here.

The lad can play, and play well - the fact that he has had two threads in 2 weeks praising his improvement says it all.

He's not shaky, he's learning.

And tonight he learnt he is better than a bloke who played 35 times as a full international for England.

Keep it going Hodour!

Not for me. When a defender is going 1v1 with him, he doesn't close him down, allowing easy crossing and further attacking play, and allows the attacker to get past him easily. The weakest link in the defence.

Yep. Not fast enough off the ball to play lb successfully. His positional sense has improved though.

If that had been packs OG the knives would have been out. For some reason Mags gets a lot of support on here. Probably because he played for Iceland who did well at euros, rather than Cheltenham.

No he is shaky. That og was caused by nerves. He wasn't decisive, and made the wrong decision. I thought the tv boys went very easy on him.

As for the og, he's not in the same league as the absolute best at City in my time. Sir Jack Connor OGS (own goal specialist)

Twas a lovely finish though. ;)

Ok I'd say you are going very easy on him. Marlon pack had one poor game and he got accused of being league 1 standard. This from a player who has been pretty consistently good this season. Why do certain players get away with this type of criticism and others don't?

I was praising mags performance against hull last week, but thought he had gone backwards again based on last nights performance. He didn't really have to deal with downing much as Bryan was dealing nicely with their right back and blocking his supply line. That's why downing was invisible.
