CITY APPOINT NEW SUPPORTER LIAISON OFFICER

City have announced the appointment of Matt Parsons as the club’s new Supporter Liaison Officer.

The 36-year-old City supporter arrives from Premier League club Arsenal, where he previously led their events team for six years, engaging in countless fan events.

Parsons will take up the role immediately, fulfilling the position on a full-time basis after a year of a ‘job share’ between the club’s head of communications Adam Baker and Bristol Sport’s head of supporter services Rachel Lemar.

City chief executive officer Mark Ashton told bcfc.co.uk: “The role of Supporter Liaison Officer is an important one, for both fans and the club, and it’s something we have been looking at for some time.

“Bristol City fans deserve a full time Supporter Liaison Officer and we believe Matt will be able to provide an important bridge between the club and the fanbase.

“He’s already spent time speaking to internal stakeholders, as well as attending our games in the stands, both home and away. He will now spend time meeting the fanbase, including our various supporter groups, to see what he can do to enhance their experience at Ashton Gate and on the road following the team.”

Hooked on football since watching Italia ’90, Parsons attended his first game at Ashton Gate against Plymouth Argyle months later.

He spent time at the University of the West of England, often trying to entice his friends to BS3. On moving to London in 2004, Parsons even set up an unofficial Putney Supporters Club for City fans!

Parsons joined Arsenal in 2011 as events manager, leading a team centred around matchday activities at the Emirates Stadium, as well as away day experiences for Gunners fans.

Working as part of the team arranging events globally, Parsons also travelled to meet Arsenal fans around the world as part of his role – and also worked hand-in-hand with the Arsenal community and foundation setups.

Parsons said: “My immediate aim is to get out and meet as many fans as possible. I want people to see that I’m approachable, both at Ashton Gate and on away days.

“I like nothing more than talking about football and Bristol City and I’m really keen to look at how we can all work together and create something that as fans we can all be proud of.

“I will work closely with the Supporters Club & Trust, the Fan Advisory Network, the Senior Reds, as well as other focus groups to understand the issues that we have as fans.

“In my position, I’ll be able to speak openly and honestly to the relevant people on a day-to-day basis to find solutions that are right for both the fans and the club.

“I love how proactive our fanbase is; seeing the flags and crowdfunding pages set up by Section 82 being a prime example, and I see my role as supporting and enabling as much as I can to maximise the impact supporters can have.”

Parsons added: “I want to be easily accessible on matchdays and will be in the Supporters Club & Trust bar from 3pm to 4.30pm on Saturday – so come and say hello!”

Fans will also be able to contact the new SLO via email – matt.parsons@bcfc.co.uk – as well as on Twitter (@MattParsonsBCFC) and via the online Fans Forum OTIB.

Good. Definitely a step in the right direction. I really hope they’re allowed to challenge the club where appropriate and aren’t just there as a tick in a box.

The previous arrangement clearly didn’t work so pretty pleased to see it seemingly being taken more seriously.

Hope they make themselves available on here and social media.

Not the easiest job in the world so best of luck Matt.

Agree that it is a step in the right direction it wasn't fair lumping it on Adam when he clearly does a great job from the media side of things and clearly didn't have the time to do both roles

Just need to get him on here now

Exactly. Let people concentrate on their specialism - the media team is thriving this season. The GIFs will be used in University case studies for sports marketing.

Just about the perfect use of social media.

Not that accessible, then.  Surely, all supporters will be watching the game?

So his accessibility to everyone means hiding in a bar you can only access if you are a SCAT member.

Good start.

(Someone had to say it!)
