RoystonFoote'snephew
The best, the very best. A joy to listen to and a real gentleman. Not just Blackpool, not just Lancashire, but the whole of football mourns. RIP Jimmy
Kid in the Riot
Must have listened to him for a combined total of hundreds of hours on radio commentaries. An excellent pundit who was a proper football man and yet had no ego with it. RIP Jimmy

cheshire_red
Sad to see this, I knew Jimmy well, he was Patron of my former cricket club where he played for 30 years. A lovely Gentleman who had time for anyone and never said a bad word.

GrahamC
A true great. Proper enthusiast for football who always made sensible, constructive points. Well before my time but a top player & good manager, too. RIP
YorksRed
Really saddened by this. By far the best summariser on Radio 5 and seemed like a true gentleman from everything I have heard and read about him. A humble voice linking us with football’s past when players were a true part of their communities.

ChippenhamRed
Loved Jimmy Armfield. It was like listening to my Grandad talk about football, in the very best sense. A voice from a bygone era, yet still hugely knowledgeable and very much in touch with the modern game.
Cunnyfunt
The holy trinity of Ingham, Green and Armfield on a Sunday afternoon were awesome listening. Sky was banned in my house growing up so I really enjoyed listening to these guys on Radio 5. A top player by all accounts as well. RIP Jimmy. oldstandrobin
Just saw on BBC lunchtime. A true legend and gentleman and a one club man. Like our own Big John, saw England service and gave his all for his club. RIP Jimmy
Lanterne Rouge
How said, RIP Mr Armfield. You were one of the last true gentlemen still involved in football and will be sorely missed.
Ska Junkie
I don't remember him as a player but saw his epitaph to Tom Finney which was a real choker. He was highly thought of by Blackpools' rival fans and was obviously a real gentleman. Like others I knew him as a fine commentator and will miss both his expertise and dulcid tones. R.I.P. North London Red
He had a remarkable career. Some may not be aware that he was a member of the England World Cup winning squad in 1966. He was also one of the few Englishmen to manage a team in a European cup final. He always came across as incredibly humble about his considerable achievements. cidered abroad
I saw him play just once in a live game. It was an FA Cup tie at home against Blackpool, Stan Matthews and several other internationals. Only 42,500 bothered to turn up! Mike Thresher bottled up Stan and it was Wally Hinshelwood who stole the show. We drew 1-1 and lost the replay 1-0 on a foggy seaside night. Thanks Jimmy for you contributions to football and radio commentaries. You will be missed by many who never met you. PS. We used Cardiff City kit in both matches due to colour clash. Can only echo Cidered Abroad's view on Jimmy and agree he was a great listen to on any football subject. Was at the game, gates to the Open End opened at 12 noon we started queueing at 10.00. am to get our usual spot on Crackers Corner. No advanced ticket purchases in those days. Being down the front it got a bit tightly packed as the crowd built up so a lot of us young uns were lifted over the railings to sit on the perimeter track. The bus men had the benches that were inside the railings. Got quite close to Stan when he took corners at our end which made our day.
Erithacus
There's a sense of the past that is lost now: that sort of player and that sort of play have changed markedly compared to today's fare. Not to forget that Jimmy was a member of the '66 squad.
Arsene's Wanger
Armfield and Graham Taylor were the only ones who just spoke about football in normal voices. They gave insightful views and didn't court controversy for the sake of it. Now everyone seems to be an insufferable pr*ck like Robbie Savage or Jonathan PEEEAAAAAAARRRCCCCEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even worse when women try to comentate like Pearce. Probably only David Pleat worth listening to now, and he usually sounds like he's had a few before the game. BanburyRed
Very sad to hear this today, a real gent by all accounts, a great footballer who represented his country with honour and distinction, and a broadcaster and commentator who told the game in the same way - with honour but most importantly distinction. When Jimmy spoke we listened. Will miss his clarity and the dignified manner of his voice. And whether he meant it or not, a saying that he would always use, once a game 'as much as anything (else)...' Thoughts and condolences to his wife and family, and the wider football community who knew him better than we do by voice alone. RIP Jimmy Armfield
