Bailey Wright

Why does he get so much stick? Slaughtered by fans around me last night again, I think he has done well playing out of position all season. Ok going forward and his passing at times isn't the best but deserves more credit than he gets.

Nobody can question how wholehearted he is and passionate. But he is very weak at times. Nearly cost us a goal second half when Mitrovic slid in. When Pisano is fit we either play a back 3 and wing backs to keep Wright or he is benched.

He's done a great job standing in at right back, but he's not a right back and he was caught out a few times last night.  As you say, 'ok going forward' but certainly no more than 'ok'.  He is playing like a centre back who has been asked to play right back, which is hardly surprising, but I do think that with a dedicated right back all season we would now be in an even better position than we are.

Completely ageee, you can tell he isn’t completely comfortable playing there, but has done so for virtually the whole season, without any objection.

His passing isn’t the best , and yes he isn’t going to bomb forward on the overlap but has been solid and ultimately that’s his job.

Interesting choices for Johnson when Pisano comes back.

Gives 100%-always....true battler.

But lacks the quality required for the starting eleven of any side with genuine ambition in this division.

When Eros is match fit/sharp where does Wright fit???

Some absolute whopper a few seats behind me was giving Diedhiou dogs abuse all game.

For Wright, you've got to congratulate him really. Playing out of position against one of the best wingers in the league and did admirably.

He gets caught wrong side, he doesn't always make the most sensible choices when it comes to playing the ball, like last night on the halfway line when he was the only one back and tried to launch a header instead of bringing it down and all he did was head it straight to Fulham to leave them 4 on 1 (that was potentially suicidal). The worst thing for me is that he cannot keeps his hands off other players shirts due to his bad positioning. He gets caught on the back foot, doesn't have the pace, so he starts pulling and climbing all over the opposition player. Not long now before he either picks up enough bookings to miss games or gives away a penalty.

Not in question-if absolutely ready then Eros plays.

I really like Bailey Wright as a person, but as a footballer, even when he is playing centre back, he really is nothing special.

I sit on the fourth row from the front in the Lansdown so I had a great view to watch him individually. I have to say by the end of the second half I was convinced he was one of the worst players on the pitch, and whilst he is a solid reliable player, and has played out of position nearly all season for the team, he is distinctly average.

I'm really unconvinced as to whether he has the quality for a top championship side, and also hope that Lee doesn't make the mistake of refusing to drop his captain when there is more quality (Pisano) available.

Having said that, I'm sure his sentiment has a good effect in the changing room, and he would be strong coming off the bench in case of injury (or suspension).

Exactly as you said, played out of position all season and he's not a full back. Easily beaten by a turn of pace, not good at going forward but we play overlapping full backs etc

It's not his fault he's in that position but he simply isn't a right back and it impacts us when another team exploits that.

Title of thread should be "The one to crucify this week"

LJ, BW and the supporters know his limitations but 100% effort and dedication to the cause.

In fairness the OP was asking why he gets stick as the OP couldn't see anything other than the odd misplaced pass.

As I said before he has played RB for us more than he has played in his natural position, and that’s a big ask. I think he does give all he has, no question but of course he has limitations in that position.

I  can’t honestly remember what Pisano was like playing for us, it was so early in the season and we hadn’t settled then. I think he was good at bombing forward, but he never played enough games to see if he is consistent or not, how injury prone is he generally, what’s his discipline like etc? I think we are putting a lot of faith in the ‘when Pisano is back’ and forgetting the bloke who has been filling in there all season.

I do notice though regarding Wright that Korey does all the talking to the Ref re decisions, Wright rarely gets involved. He doesn’t seem to be barking out orders on the pitch either, players like Korey and Flint do a lot of the organising. I guess Wright is Captain for a reason, but if he is eventually benched for Pisano I don’t personally think we will miss our Captain as such  on the pitch, maybe the player.

I find that statement a bit confusing, surely being a solid reliable player is one of the qualities we require.

How many times have you been out with him or on holiday with him and his family?

That's probably just where you're sitting. I was in two areas last night both supportive of him, didn't hear a word of criticism. Or slaughter. Given he kept one of the divisoin's best players Sessignon quiet by letting him know he was there early on I thought Wright did well, can't believe he'd be slaughtered for that. His passing can be wonky though.

As a centre back he is one of the best in the division.  Top 15 i would say.  As a right back he isnt great but doing a solid job filling in.

People seem to expect our players to be amazing every game. Every player is two poor games away from being sold.

list our centre backs from the last 20 years and Wright would probably be top five. Easily top 10

I must say that I felt he was caught out for the equaliser at Leeds, he let the attacking player get the wrong side of him, I think a genuine right back would have been positioned better, that is understandable though. Where he can be good is in the crunching tackles he makes that get the crowd going and change the momentum of games. I don't think you would ever seem give anything less than 100% in that regard.

You’ve got that completely (bailey) right.

I agree he’s done well standing in at right back but to progress we need some one who offers a lot more and has more confidence in that position whether that’s Pisano or someone else.

Mate.....he's done well enough however, he isn't a proper right back which is a specialist position and sometimes he gets caught out, especially when confronted with a someone who is tricky with some pace.

If we are serious about progressing in this league we really need proven players in their correct positions..........where the heck is Pisano

3rd from the left on the bench probably, he wouldn't be in my starting eleven but has done a reasonable job in a position he does not look totally at ease with.
