ashton_fan
Luke Steel apparently out of contract at the end of this season with rumours we're looking at other keepers. Do people think we'll keep him or let him go?
Ashtonwurzel
Very decent back up if he is willing to accept the role.
RUSSEL85
I think he will want first team football and its unlikely we can offer that but I do think he will stay in the Championship.

Port Said Red
I think goalkeepers have a different mindset when it comes to playing regularly as they are fighting over one specialist position in a team game that often celebrates utility. I remember his interview on joining quite clearly and he made it clear that he understood his position behind Frank. I would imagine that he has been pretty pleased with the amount he has got this season, mainly thaks to the cup run. I would be happy for him to stay if he wants, looking back on the season, it could be argued that his display against Man Utd was the best by either 'keeper. robin_unreliant
I think we should be looking for a new number one, with Fielding as cover, and let him move on.

We should've gone in for Daniel Bentley when he was at Southend. I'd be up for that if we could bring someone of his calibre in.

He is better than just a 'decent back up ' from what I've seen of him . Frankie gets the nod because of his amazing will to win and knowledge of how his long time teammates play. I wouldn't be worried if FF left and Steele took the number 1 spot . I am surprised that his contract runs out this summer view the fact that Mark Ashton said ' none of the players we want to keep are out of contract in the summer ". Logically that says that we don't want to retain his services .
wendyredredrobin
There's nothing much between Steele and Fielding. Steele has better distribution, comes for crosses and comes for balls when defenders expect him to though. Of the two, on balance, I prefer Steele, but h emay get the offer of a better contract as a no. 1 elsewhere. Hope he stays.
Angmering Red
Looked it up and the BBC sport website quoted when he signed that it was a free transfer, 1 year contract with an option of a further year.

Good work . Could this be a ' Post talking cobblers ' again type thread. So this summer we have an option to extend.

Wasn't saying as a back up to FF necessarily but he would be /is a quality back up for a top 6 Championship team and probably not a regular starter. mattjtsmith
I think that he and Frank are about equals. Different strengths but same overall. It would be right for LJ to look for an improvement as I think it's an area we can certainly strengthen in
cidered abroad
Not wishing to widen the debate but if we are to realistically make a consistent challenge for promotion, FF and Steele plus several other regular first teamers, are the ones who we need to replace with better quality. Dredd
I agree that if we want to challenge then a higher calibration of keeper is required. Frankie is better in my opinion and would keep but depends if he would want to play back up
ashton_fan
I think the problem is that for any keeper better than Frankie we'd have to pay a lot of money and probably it could be better spent elsewhere in the team. The past has shown that the other low-cost keepers have been OK as a backup but been unable to challenge him for a first team place.

Disagree, I would like to see us splash out on a top keeper for once, who can organise the defence as well as be an incredible shot stopper. If we had a keeper who could organise his defence well I could see players like Magnússon improving rapidly and not making poor mistakes mistakes e.g. first Preston goal. I don't disagree, I thought Girefer was ok apart from his kicking. We only got Frankie because of his injury issues, he was destined for higher things when he was younger but a top foreign taller keeper would keep him on his toes

If we are building for the future surely he can't be considered as the starting keeper?

While that is true, for the style of football we are trying to play, do we really want a keeper who has such poor distribution and constantly loses us possession? It can't be considered mistakes anymore for the amount Frankie boots the ball out of play! Don't get me wrong I think Frankie would be an excellent backup, but I would hope we are looking to bring in a far better number one.
BCFCadam
As much as I'd love him to stay, I think it's only fair that he gets more first team football, he's definitely good enough imo
