Why isn’t there a Bristol City app?

We must be one of the only teams in the championship without one. Even burton have one. If we were to go up then for sure we’d be the only team in the premier without one.

We we had one last season. We were told there’d be one this season.

They are good good for many things, ticket sales, marketing and merchandise not withstanding.

It makes the club seem seem archaic and cheap. These things are not new, and are not expensive to set up or manage.

The players have got one!

There's very little point in most apps from a user point of view.  Most of the time they are simply mobile websites wrapped up in an app with additional tracking and data theft, usually they demand permissions they have no real need for and they make you accept terms and conditions which if you bothered reading them would make you realise you're sharing pretty much everything on your phone.  There are very few things that can't be done well in a website delivered in a mobile browser with javascript and service workers these days, and that way you have far greater control over your privacy and intrusive advertising.

I’m highlighting the benefit of an app from the clubs POV. Less time for consideration = more sales. It’s also additional revenue through ads.

From a personal POV, I want it for quick easy access to city news and fixture lists.

I don’t go on the sky sports website when I want a browse of the sports news. I don’t go on the bbc website when I want a browse of the news. I go on their apps. They’re quicker, easier and better.

App utilisation is literally why smart phones are so popular. You old gits.

I'd like to think I know enough about apps - I've dabbled in making one or two ;) but was more pointing out nobody else seems to have done "the full package".

And I suspect that's partly a problem with interfacing an app with an externally supplied ticket system for which the ticket system supplier will probably want a few quid. Then there's the integration with the online shop to sort...

So do you think city should get a bog standard app sorted? Worts n all is obviously more of a dream.

Also, how much would it cost to make? £10k?

A pretty standard app  shouldn't be too expensive. The City/Bristol Sport sites are running out of a content management system so a news feed would be pretty easy to implement. Videos are delivered via StreamAMG so shouldn't be too much complexity.

On my way back from Lisbon at the moment. Have been using the Carris (Lisbon transport) app for the past 3 days. Simple directions how to get from a to b, by bus, metro, tram or combination of each, whatever is the optimum. Told me when to change and when to get off. Made  journeys so much easier.

Why can’t they just go to the official website and which the highlights reels

Because they videos focus on individual players, positioning, movement etc. It’s pro-zone, not the normal video for fans like us.

Honest question mate, I don't really use my phone for this kind of thing so I'm not wise to it. What would you actually be able to get on an app that isn't already available through the club by other means?

Only thing I could really think is that an app would (in theory) be designed for mobile devices and thus optimised for them.

While much better than before I'm not wild on the mobile site as it is now.

I do Barry, I do. I'm just jealous of how great your life is that you don't have that extra 30-60 seconds free to open up google and buy your football shirt that way because you're to busy balls deep in Scarlett Johansson.

Saying that, going by the name Barry I assume you're an older gentlemen, so I suppose every second counts when there aren't many left :laughcont:

You can tell the posters over the age of 40 on this thread. Apps are much easier and quicker to use.

Bit patronising! Massive generalisation on both the age and value of apps remarks.

The average person of any age only uses about 4 apps regularly - there isn't some big secret that young people have cottoned on to, if there was, why do people of all ages use so few apps for any serious amount of time? Everyone is driven by how worthwhile an app actually is, and many (probably most) apps simply aren't.

I work with companies that need to tackle the mobile market and apart from the excitable marketing director, a lot more thought now goes into it than simply we need an app. Having an app is not right for everyone, in fact it is not right for a lot of companies and use cases. @Nibor has illustrated some very good reasons why.

Having sat through focus groups with these companies listening to customers from every demographic, it is actually the youngest and most technically savvy who are most aware that apps often aren't worth having. So, respectfully, to simply say "apps are much easier" isn't quite the youthful insight that you have implied. ;)

Also, a halfway useful app will cost £50,000-£100,000 to produce. The idea that City, who are so cost sensitive to their merchandising operations that they only produce about 7 different items of clothing and only hold stock in popular sizes for about a month, would do this so someone can buy said gear in an app, is laughable.

Completely accurate.

However The question was why isn’t there a BCFC AP. Have you not made an arguement why from the Clubs perspective they should have one. All that data access to our long lunches and porn habits are bound to be useful

Either way I wouldn’t want it and perhaps the ROI Just isn’t there if the consensus is they can ram it no matter what!

Will Scarlett or other 'hubs' be integrated into the new Bristol City app that Barry is making?

Get on dragons den like?

You’re normally a good poster but a lot of this sounds like shite
