  4. It was a really strange time for me. My daughter Molly had been born around 6 weeks before the tournament started, she was premature and weighed in at just 15 ounces and spent all of her short life at Southmead hospital. I was going to the games then travelling back and going to see her in the middle of the night (there was no restrictions on visiting hours for kids in the intensive care unit). There was this strange feeling of euphoria while I was at the games, tempered by the obvious worry about my daughter and looking back I view the whole tournament as marking a big change in how I view my life . I still laugh when I think of the quarter final against Spain and my mate getting in a row with Wendy Richard after we spotted her in outside a Paddington pub and he started yelling 'Pauline' at her and at the semi final game drinking with Johnny Vaughan and his mates after a mate struck up a conversation with him, it was before he got the Big Breakfast gig but he had been on TV and I spent the whole time trying to remember who he was while my mate didn't have a clue who he was. It was a bit of a scramble to get tickets for the semi final , but we did manage to get a couple (I seem to remember it was a case of just ringing the ticket office to get them). The noise was so loud at the start of the game, that when Shearer got the early goal, there wasn't that much of a noticeable difference in the noise. I even went to the final . Divvy (not that I ever called him that, he was always Mark to me) had 3 tickets, but once England were out he wasn't interested, so sold them to me. After briefly leaving intensive care, Molly caught an infection and died in the August. Like England's bid for glory, it just wasn't meant to be, but by May of 1997 we had a son ( and another daughter in 99). So Euro 96 meant an awful lot to me for all sorts of reasons , however Tony Blair will be remembered, there was still a real feel good factor about the country and Euro 96 was a huge part of that wasn't really seen again until the 2012 Olympics.

  5. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/52665809 England captain Harry Kane has joined forces with Leyton Orient by sponsoring their shirts next season and donating the space to three good causes. Tottenham striker Kane, 26, made his senior debut for Orient in 2011. The club's home strip will carry a message of thanks to frontline workers tackling the coronavirus pandemic. Mental health charity Mind and Haven House Children's Hospice will have their logos on Orient's two change shirts as part of the deal. Kane was 17 when he joined Orient on loan from Tottenham and scored five goals in 18 appearances for the O's, before going on to establish himself with Spurs and England. Orient have said 10% of the proceeds from each replica shirt sold will go to the cause featured on the front. Kane said: "I was born and brought up only at a couple of miles from Orient's stadium and I'm really happy to have the opportunity to give back to the club that gave me my first professional start. "It also gives me a platform to say a big thank you to the many frontline heroes and charities out there who provide care and support during these challenging times." Orient chief executive Danny Macklin added: "What started with a simple idea has escalated into a very unique and emotive shirt sponsorship agreement. "We wanted to say thank you for the exceptional hard work and dedication of the frontline heroes during this pandemic and also bring attention to the other charities out there who have all suffering financial loss due to the pandemic. "We are in uncertain and worrying times across the world but thanks to their efforts we will get through this together. "Thank you, Harry, for your amazing support and generosity - you are a true role model for the modern game."

  6. That's the great thing about football though, every success is relative, our last minute promotion against Dagenham, or your last minute win against Manchester United, would have meant just as much-if not more- to us than an umpteenth Champions League to a Real Madrid fan.

  8. I appreciate I’m on a forum about a club I dearly love, but does anyone else feel like I do, in that I really couldn’t give a **** about this season. If the new season starts in August, fine. If not, I don’t really care.

  10. They've voted for no relegation to the National League - but this is subject to EFL approval which I hope they don't get. No relegation - then no promotion I say.

  13. With apologies to @AppyDAZE, what ten movies would you take to your desert island? For the purposes of this thread you can have films that are split over two or three separate episodes (like The Lord Of The Rings or Kill Bill) as one choice. Mine Blazing Saddles Life Of Brian Kill Bill Pulp Fiction The Outlaw Josey Wales Lord Of The Rings The Godfather trilogy Kelly`s Heroes The Warriors The Matrix trilogy

  15. Great news for supporting fans of sport in Australia today with announcements from the leading 3 sporting codes. AFL Ozzie rules, NRL Ozzie rugby league and A League Ozzie football (soccer down under ) AFL - Non contact in groups of up to 8 as of May 18 then full scale contact training from May 25. All players will be tested at least 24 hours before each session. New fixtures and accurate details will be released in the next 10 days. The teams across the country will all play in Queensland which means the 2 WA teams Fremantle Dockers ( my team ) West Coast Eagles and the 2 South Australian teams Adelaide crows and Port Adelaide will relocate to Queensland. They have been booked in two very large golf course centers on the Gold Coast in Queensland where they Will make their home. NRL - Rugby League after 8 weeks of uncertainty training will start in restricted environments on Thursday the 28th of May. Expect to see where all clubs across all state and territories will also be contained in one state to play the remainder of the fixturers. A League - Still approximately one month away from commencement of training. There are a large number of players that returned back to their original countries in Europe at the start of the Corona virus and are still under strict national travel bans. There are a high number of players in the A League that originally returned to Italy which has around 31K deaths and you can appreciate there would be many other players that returned back to Europe. In comparison Australia as of today only have a total of 98 deaths and we are very lucky. Things are starting to get back to what used too be normal in WA/SA/NT. In the eastern states like New South Wells, Victoria they still have their challenges mainly due to population numbers in such close areas. I wish all of those in the UK a great weekend coming up as i hear its going to be some nice weather.

  16. I normally visit my parents in Goolwa, South Australia twice a year for 3-4 weeks. They are 95 & 90 years old and as such not in great health. Have this awful feeling that I won't see them again as this pandemic will not disappear anytime soon.

  19. Hi all, hope all you fellow reds are well & safe, this is my first post on here, although I’ve always enjoyed reading people’s opinions over a number of years. i am a self employed personal trainer / sports coach and due to the current situation I’ve not been working so around my Mrs demanding jobs for me to do and spending time with the kids I’ve started interviewing sports athletes. I was intrigued on their diets / fitness programmes over this crazy period and I started off with Joe Joyce of Bristol bears then I managed to interview Herbie Kane & Matty Hill. tomorrow I will be interviewing Brian Tinnion & have a couple of others lined up. I thought this would be a great opportunity to try and get my name out there and hopefully be able to build my business I’ve been building for the past 4 years. So if anyone wants to listen to my pervious interviews then head to my Facebook page Facebook.com/jpsportfitness a heads up I’m no Toby Osborne but it’s something I’ve quite enjoyed doing and if any of you guys have any questions you’d like me to ask Tins tomorrow drop me a message COYR Joe

  29. Bless him...thinking a week later the piss taking will have died down and everyone would’ve forgotten about it You’re absolutely spot on, it gives me a very smug feeling inside thinking about all those Sagheads and what they must have felt after spending most of that season telling US we were definitely going down. All those times they celebrated us losing league matches in divisions above them against teams that would’ve put 10 past the Sags had they been the opposition and not us. Sag nause indeed, many workplaces have more than one...I never tire of telling them how much I find their relegation to non league hilarious.

  34. Reading it back it looks a bit overly sentimental for a thread about football, but I would imagine for many of us there are occasions that football can play a huge part in our lives. I look bad at that particularly tournament with fondness rather than sadness, it did seem a very positive time for our country.

  36. Greed, greed and more greed. Just like Bolton, Brighton know that when their dalliance with the prem is over, they will slip back to where they came from. Just like Bolton etc. they’re desperate to think of any back door way to hang on to the loot.

  37. Completely agree with you, a season for me is all about the momentum of a season, the highs & lows and hoping you have something to play for at the end. This season stopped so long ago it would feel like a promotional mini tour, almost like a pre-season but without the fans, just think it would be sterile.

  39. How many of them actually go and see that rubbish (& I don't count slipping Bob the gateman a fiver to get in) Not many I suspect judging by the sell out crowds at Turnip Patch Tent City. It's like the window lickers who phone in to Radio Bristol after the match and give an opinion on a game they've not seen but listened to on the radio. "It was definitely a penalty Geoff from what I heard on the radio, stone wall" Comedy gold.

  45. This guy, having to take a week off work. I doubt very much that it was because he was upset, probably more due to the fact that he's a massive Sag nause who has continually revelled in any misfortune we've had for years and years. He clearly knew that the opportunity for anyone else to give him some grief back would have been taken and relentless, and he knew he wouldn't have a leg to stand on. You can just imagine what he's like - every workplace has one... FTG

  47. Bitcoin won't ever make mainstream use, it's just too slow and expensive I've asure that a certain type of cryptocurrency will do though. It's just better at being money than money is, but as it stands, for some reason one of the worst cryptocurrencies is actually the most well known.

  48. I don't need bitcoin as Ive made my fortune thanks to a couple of emails I've received recently. One, from the USA was from an attorney telling me that Im a beneficiary of a decades person's estate over there and just needs my bank account details so the money can be sent to me once the estate is finalised. The other, from Nigeria, was from a Prince who needs to move twenty million out of the country and just needs a UK bank account into which the funds can be transferred and for the use of my account will pay me a 10% fee. With all the email scams going around it's lucky that Im dealing with such highly regarded and respected people as an attorney and a prince, so I have nothing to worry about and am just waiting for the money to arrive!
