  1. I try to reset and be positive, but that was frankly abysmal. We are only going one way. 1 deflected free kick from 35 yards was our only shot on target in 102mins of derby football. That line up is so much better than what we dished up despite deciding we can play without a left-back. The substitutions? Our best midfielder for two games running hooked, and our best midfielder across the course of this season dropped. A centre-forward who refuses to commit himself to this club has somehow become a man that has to play every minute of every game. McCarthy and TC are probably beside themselves with disbelief at how easy that was. Plus Marlon Pack who seemed more animated and tactically aware than the whole of our bench. Deary me, time to be realistic, this is dire. Out-fought, out-thought, out-played. Only silver lining for the board is that there was not 25k plus in the ground today as that would have been toxic. Cannot see how anyone can draw any positive signs from the descent we are in.

  2. This is an Ashton out thread... ....why? 1) Overseen the most injuries in one season in living memory 2) The players purchased are getting worse season after season the quality of the squad, is trousers. 3) The league position is getting worse season after season 4) The football is so awful I refuse to watch it 5) The coaches appointed are not good enough 6) We're overweight in midfield, with absolutely not good enough players 7) We buy players with no thought of a system or way of playing Where is our next 8million plus player sale coming from 9) What is the actual plan And because all roads lead to Ashton, all roads in turn lead to Lansdown. Steve and Jon, get your house in order lads. Get rid of this leech and get some well respected football people in. Perhaps then we might make some progress.

  3. He’s “in charge of all football matters”. We don’t have a 1st Team Manager. We don’t have a Head of Recruitment. We don’t have a Chief Scout. We don’t have a Director of Football. We have 1 person who is in control of everything. So, when footballing performances and results are poor, the person who is self confessed “in charge of all football matters”, is surely the one who is responsible.

  4. Sack Ashton. Sack the 2 pointless ex-England coaches. Remove Holden from Head Coach. Hire a proper manager. One with managerial experience and a CV that says “I know how to recruit footballers and I know how to put a team together”. I don’t know, Paul Cook as an example. If Holden is happy to do so, he can stay as a coach or assistant. The new manager has a say in bringing in a Chief Scout / Head of Recruitment. Working as a team to bring the best possible players to the club. Sack off half the recruitment analysts. Hire some proper scouts, all across the country, doing the hard yards.

  5. I very rarely comment directly after poor performances, and even when you take into account injuries and C19... however...some of the decisions and tactics this season have been absolutely baffling. It's some of the most amateurish decision making I've ever seen. In all seriousness, do any of our coaching staff have leadership qualities? They all come across as pretenders. Would I be listening and respecting what they had to say as a player? Everything comes across as amateurish...I look at our three coaches and all I get in my head is Only Fools and Horses. All three of them have to go imo. I can forgive results...but our football is the worst I've seen on a consistent basis for a long time. The reality is, fans are sick to death of the world we are living in, they look for a bit of respite from their team...not to come away like you want to slash your wrists after most games. In all seriousness, this will hit the club in the pocket, fans will not return in numbers if this sham continues.

  6. After seeing today's result, I felt absolutely nothing... Wasn't sad, angry or even gutted. To be Honest I didn't even remember we were playing until after the result. Normally my heart would sink at a result like this. Yes it probably has something to do with covid, however I really feel the club have a huge job on their hands to get people happy to come back and watch the club willingly. The club and fans have never been further apart and it is really worrying right now.

  7. 100% clear this is a coaching issue. These players are better than this. Our tempo, phases of play, patterns, all set by the coaching team. I actually think on the whole that the fanbase was pretty accepting of the whole Holden appointment despite the smoke and mirrors communication behind it, and have been patient, but some things are not forgivable and to be dominated in that manner in a derby is completely unacceptable. Cardiff had not won in 8 and basically just swatted us away on our own turf. Embarrassing.

  8. No they don’t. All roads lead to Lansdown. Ashton is just his patsy.

  9. So far Mark Ashton has - for all his talk of '20 years in this industry' and his contacts in football and 'planning ahead' and 'consulting throughout the football Industry' has .... after twice undergoing 6 week periods of extensive interviews.... appointed:. Steve Lansdown's mate, and Steve Lansdown's mate's mate. He's a fraud .

  11. 3 dominant centre backs. Flint 6ft 6, Morrison 6ft 4, Nelson 6ft. All brilliant in the air and strong as any cb’s in this league. 3 cultured midfielders, Lansbury, Williams, HNM. Number of balls played into the channel to turn the big dominant CB’s. None. Number of balls lumped up to Diedhiou by our long ball defence, for him to lose to the 3 dominant CB’s. Loads. Oh dear.

  12. Today caps the latest in a long line of dismal performances under Holden, IMO. Off the top of my head: Boro (h), Norwich (h), Huddersfield (a - for 70 minutes), Cardiff (a), QPR (a - for 45 minutes), Rotherham (a), Millwall (h), Preston (a), Luton (a), Norwich (a), Huddersfield (h - for 70 minutes), Derby (a), and now Cardiff (h). That’s ten whole games and at least three more halves — more than a quarter of the season. This is consistently the worst football I’ve seen since Millen or McInnes and that might be harsh on them. Now I don’t expect us to win every game and I empathise with the injuries, but is it too much to expect us to compete with a Cardiff side with a sub ‘keeper in goal? I don’t think so. The bottom line is the performances under Holden are largely abysmal and the results are starting to reflect that. Four defeats in the last six games now. Holden’s inexperience is being shown through tactical ineptitude. For example, Lansbury hasn’t even had an U23 game and is thrown in for most of the game today — in defensive midfield, ahead of others who’ve done well in that role this season. The board will start tapping us up for ST money soon. Who in their right mind wants to watch this dross? The worrying thing for me is there’s little hope of this getting any better as no manager worth their salt will accept working under Ashton. Drastic change is required otherwise I think we are in real danger of relegation next year. All my opinion, of course.

  13. In spite of the absolute dross and lack of enjoyment, not renewing hasn’t crossed my mind. I’m lucky enough to have not (yet) had finances impacted by Covid and I have no truck with anyone not renewing both in the current football and financial circumstances. For me, Ashton Gate is home. I spent my childhood there, I’ve taken my kids there. I’ve had great days and really bad days but I just can’t not go. Most of all, it’s the place I’ll always most associate with my dad. His names on the statue and on the wall, but his spirits in the place so it’s where I’ll go to remember him. One of the last things he said was lamenting never going to AG again - even though the football was shit! Thats one of the reasons why I hate what’s happening at the moment with negative disinterested football. Holden, Ashton, Downing and “Simmo” will go. They’ll get other jobs, have taken more money out than merited and won’t give a second thought to bcfc. Us that are left will keep going regardless. They’ve got us by the bollocks either way. They could at least try entertaining us while they do.

  14. Let’s get this right.Ashton is the CEO of a family business of which he is not a member. Ashton is responsible for the day-to-day running of said business. He does not make any major decisions without the sign-off of the owner that is an absolute certainty. He can ‘spin’ the decisions to the owner and put his angle on them but ultimately he does what he is told. Do not misunderstand, I despise the man and his persona but he is really not the problem, he is a YES man and is well rewarded for it. He will soon be gone as I expect his ambitions lie in a role at the EFL or the PL BUT, his departure will change nothing. The problem is an owner who believes that he can get PL football doing it his ‘way’. I have a huge respect for SL as a self-made man but on this one he is utterly wrong.

  15. Ashtons a puppet , with Lansdown the puppet master He does what the boss wants , and picks up his £500k Holden was a Jon and Steve Lansdown appointment
    12 points
  16. Ashton is no puppet. Steve Lansdown is a very busy man. He has delegated the football side of things to this clever gentleman. Now to understand what Ashton is actually all about I implore anyone who really wants to know to read 'Broken Dreams - Vanity, greed and the souring of British Football' by Tom Bower. It is researched fact, not a fictitious novel. And even this is the tip of the iceberg. It doesn't matter what the quality of the players involved in the transfers actually is, just that they happen on a regular and unecessary basis . The kick backs are enormous and all the people involved in the deals are on the take. If you are not people think there is something wrong, they sniff a rat, you can't play the game, so you take. So the estimated £500k basic pay is by no means only what he is on. The odd quality 'bit of business' signing whether it is a sale or purchase is necessary to cover the tracks. I don't usually make a long post like this but the fact that there is no hierarchy, no-one to pull him up on anything, and I mean anything, means that until he is gone this club will not go forward. This CEO is not working for Bristol City Football Club.

  18. Dean Holden’s post Cardiff interview, you are invited to add your own concluding paragraph. I’d like to apologise to our fans for that performance, it was unacceptable and simply not good enough. When I was appointed I made clear my delight at being given the opportunity and stressed that I would be as honest as possible, you may remember that at the time others labeled me a ‘good human being’. It is time to be honest with myself and the fans. Managing at this level is beyond me although of course my passion and desire to learn and succeed remain undiminished. However, throughout my tenure we have failed to progress and as was the case yet again today our performances have been very poor. Furthermore, we have, in my honest opinion, won a number of games against the balance of play; away at Cardiff and QPR being but two examples. Throughout my career and certainly during this season I have not looked for excuses and as I have previously stated I always look for the positives. Nevertheless, it is clear that the squad has been decimated by injuries this season and I am faced with managing a depleted team, which means having to adapt and have players out of position. After another woeful performance even I am struggling to see any positives. Consequently, following today’s game I have spoken to Mark Ashton.... 1. He made clear that whatever happens I am safe in this job, at least until the end of the season. He explained that largely this is due to the huge financial impact of the current situation on our club and football in general. 2. He informed me that following the game Steve Lansdown contacted him and it has been agreed that, by mutual consent, I am stepping down as Head Coach with immediate effect. 3. I explained to him that I was tendering my resignation as the Club needs to plan for next season and the time to do that is now. 4. Your turn

  19. For the most part the story of Bristol City these past twenty plus years since SL's involvement has been 'where would we be without him? Aren't we fortunate.' I recall twenty plus years ago being a fan and shareholder who felt part of the club. We had not early gone through the hoop in 1982, been bottom of the basement division for a short while a little later but within four years were playing and winning in our first Wembley final and by 1990 were back in the second tier and finishing in a creditable position in 1991 only bettered once in the thirty years since then. Thus from bottom of the pile to the high echelons of what is now the championship and two Wembley finals had been achieved in less than 9 years. We, the supporters of the club, deserve a great deal of credit for that. We turned up in the fourth division in numbers and gave our backing. With our numbers behind us we achieved things. We also felt like the club was ours and together we owned our stadium and felt like ultimately we could call the directors to task. There was no one supporter who thought he knew best and if things were done his way we would succeed though his way was skewered and wasn't the model for any other club. I suppose what I am trying to convey is would we really be worse off had Steve Lansdown not taken over here? It's automatically assumed we would be a mid-table third tier side at most playing in an antiquated stadium. Really? I haven't access to a crystal ball but maybe, just maybe, we might have experienced premier league football this century as managers were appointed instead of head coaches tasked with participating in the running of this club in the manner Mr Lansdown wants. Managers with football nous not head coaches effectively controlled by the man at the top with a fantastic knowledge of finance and business models but a crap comprehension of what it takes to mould a team that will take to the field with a winning mentality. Surely too, with the fan base we have (nothing whatsoever to do with Steve Lansdown) we would have improved OUR stadium too. Maybe it might by now have involved foreign backers, but one rarely hears the media, or supporters of the Manchester clubs, or various championship clubs who have tasted promotion to the premier league complain about this. I'm pretty sure I have never heard a Leicester City fan wish he/she was still in the championship under the ownership of a local businessman made good like the lucky Bristol City fans experience. I don't wish to denigrate Steve Lansdown as he has put his money into the club (although not when it comes to appointing the most important role in the club that of manager). His heart is in the right place and he feels that he is doing the best for everyone by being a benevolent dictator. However, I truly believe he has done so by disenfranchising the supporters. We have to go along with his model for the club and doff our caps and be truly grateful. We deserve a voice too, Steve. You have taken the club from us. It's only your view that counts. Yet we are supporters too. Your ideas are not working. They have rarely worked in football and are unlikely to. Treat us with respect too. Why on earth were the likes of Cook and Hughton interviewed for the post when you, the great businessman, knew full well they would never work as your lapdog unable to 'manage' this football club. I fear it was simply a cosmetic exercise to placate the fans. Mr Lansdown if someone treated you like a mug they'd be out on their ear. Please don't treat us with disrespect. In future when you make a head coach appointment just inform us of the candidates who are prepared to play the role you have scripted for them. It will be a very uninspiring list but at least we will know where we stand. Then we, as supporters of this proud football club, might actually think that if it comes to it we will be better off forming our own club and starting at the bottom of the pyramid then passing yours on the way up.

  20. For all the moaning...they hold the Trump card. The only way they will take notice, is if fans stop paying for season tickets and going to games. We are customers...nothing more, nothing less these days. Clubs are in a win, win situation. So many fans pay up regardless. It's in the blood for many. We go because it's a ritual. Many have said they don't go for the football...but for meeting up with mates and going through the same rituals each week. Forums are also great for clubs...people rant on forums, get it out of their systems then are less vociferous when at the ground. The only way they will take notice is if it hits the pocket. In a world where everything is negative, we look for joy and entertainment. Give us something to be proud of regardless of result. It's dire to watch, depressing, cloaked in bullshit words from the club. Its not about winning anymore...many fans are losing the love for it. I'd rather we heard that we are going to blood as many academy products as we can, without Prem talk, know where we stand and get behind that. Not...we want Prem and expect it, and then employ people out of their depth to provide it. That's why so many are frustrated.

  22. I think it’s just that we’re shit. The board have managed expectations appallingly, but as others have posted, it’s just not fun. When we were struggling in the 80s, when I started following them, you still felt part of something and displays just weren’t this inept. Even during some lean spells in the 90s, you almost forgave the club because we didn’t have the resources to to really achieve more. We have had every opportunity in the last 4 years (squad, facilities, results, momentum) to achieve something not seen since the 70s and yet poor coaching and poor board level direction, leadership and decision making has meant we have reached a point where the ‘brand’ is fast losing its appeal and we are yet again bereft of idea or direction.

  26. Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic. Massengo the only player to take any credit from today. Not only is Mark Ashton ruining this football club, but he has ruined this young man's career. You can see the superior quality. If he had stayed with Monaco he would either be with a big club now or would have them all sniffing. Famara once again tried his hardest against impossible odds. He IS our best defender, but is of course judged as a striker, which is what he should be. But when your team is forced to defend all game and has no creativity up front, what chance do you have? From now on any poster that I see accusing him of not trying will go on ignore. I don't care what anyone says, a triple substitution to me always says, "I've ****ed it up and now I'm desperate". This 'management' team hasn't got a ****ing clue what it is doing. If we really aren't going down??... and if Lansdown had the slightest bit of interest in the football side of his toybox, he would pay up the contracts of Ashton, Holden, Simpson and Downing tonight and put Tinnion and Murray in charge until the end of the season. They might not have a ****ing clue what they are doing either, but it least we would have a bit of passion and fight for the shirt. I don't want to see any more GIFs etc. from this football club of players pumping fists and tapping or kissing the badge until they show the same fight on the pitch. I haven't been so disgusted since I walked out of AG at 0-4 down to Huddersfield at half time in the days of Liam Fontaine.

  29. They all leave me cold. You can warm to people, respect people, feel peoples presence...listen to them and think ' these people know what they are talking about'. Demand respect...showing leadership qualities. These three don't have that...they don't stand out, they aren't leaders. They are just grey. The sort of people you'd walk past and not even notice. No disrespect to them...that's just how they are, but you don't want that leading your Club. You need leaders. They aren't. It's a cross between Del Boy and Froda coaching.

  34. You are correct in that Mark Ashton is a big part of the problem. Is the bloke on the Channel Islands that bothered is my question? Today was a Derby game and that was the most spineless, gutless performance we could possibly have mustered. I think today broke new ground in terms of lack of performance. I have defended Dean Holden but that today was indefensible in every way. That wasn’t 70 minutes of total shit with 20 minutes of play thrown in, that was just 90 minutes of pure dross. Until the guy in Guernsey decides he is unhappy nothing changes at his football club.

  36. There will be a hardcore (6-7000) who will renew whatever. And that’s going to be about it. Many on here have lost the love for live football and our performances this season have done nothing to encourage anyone who wants to be entertained to buy a season ticket. The appointment of Holden was a very short-sighted one and one that will come back to haunt the club both in footballing terms and financially.

It took 6 weeks to find someone who would and then the mother of all spin campaigns to justify it, as the chosen one was the least likely based on the profile given of who they wanted.
