  1. If you like history podcasts then Dan Carlin's "Hardcore History" series is amazing. They are VERY long episodes (6 hours per episode isn't uncommon!) but are so amazingly detailed.

  2. Had a quick read of the two comments voicing objections, and to be fair, they are both positive about the development but wanting reassurance about the parking and traffic situation. Which sounds perfectly reasonable.

  3. Edit - meant to post this in the politics forum. Ah well. Searched for a thread but couldn't see one yet so thought I'd start one. I am currently listening to the The Lazarus Podcast which looks at North Korea's attempt to steal $1 billon from Bangladesh. I'm only one episode in but it's fairly good. Others that I've enjoyed are: British History Podcast - Produced by Jamie in America it's a pretty broad look into British History. Currently into 300 episodes and only just getting into 1066. It really encouraged me to look more into pre 800 British History so I owe it a lot. Revolutions Podcast - Produced by Mike Duncan who also did a Roman Podcast. The Haitian and Mexican Revolutions have been particularly great. BBC History Extra podcasts - I tend to listen to these on and off. Cover a wide range of subjects. Also History Hit get some good ones in but I can't stand Dan Snow. Football Based: Tifo Football occasionally, OSIB of course, and Undr the Cosh though I found UTC a bit samey after a while. Realise some of those aren't political but I am always interested in finding more so thought I'd ask the fair minds of OTIB.

  4. The deal is all done for the reopening of the line , network rail already have it out to tender for the construction of it, it's just waiting for north Somerset to rubber stamp the planning once covid lets them have a public desplay of the plans, The idea of an Ashton gate station was dropped at least 3 version of the plans for the line ago after the report into the stations substantially and ability to generate income found that not enough local people in the area to use it and make it pay, interesting match day attending was not allowed to be considered as the rules do not allow for special events it all has to be based on how many will.use it when the football isn't on, I know there was an offer at one point for an excursion platform but this never went anywhere as the club didn't want to pay the millions it would have cost and they could not be sure that it would be used by GWR , The only hope at the moment is the Bristol west 4 tracking happens as this will make parson street back to 4 platforms so the trains from the new line will be able to stop something at the moment they will not

  5. I seem to stick with History type podcasts the most rather than other genres (apart from OSIB of course) Currently going with... A History Of Rock Music in 500 Songs The Constant, A History Of Getting Things Wrong The History Of English

  6. Are the club going to launch baby wear this year? Why is our merchandise so poor in options compared to other clubs ?

  7. Agreed. St Nicks has been amazing for top quality street food for years, going back at least 15 years or so I’d say. Matina is top quality and fantastic value I’ll agree with that. The Caribbean lady there does the best Curry Goat in town, too.

  8. Rumour seems to be that it's Elton John, not 100% sure though. Won't be long until we find out.

  9. Squeezed is the best burger I've ever tasted. Honest Burger, Hobgoblin & Three Brothers all up there though. I tried Bronx a month or so ago, it was terrible! The fries were unbelievably dry, I've never had fries like it & I thought the same about the burger bun. I don't like to write places off after 1 visit though, so will definitely give it ago again, might even pop down on the weekend. Asado really wasn't for me either! May have to put it back on the list as well.

  11. Few updates on this. Birmingham No longer seem to be under an embargo. Can't say I'm surprised, big sales of Adams and Bellingham in recent times and seem to have been cutting back in general. Blackburn Still awaiting Club Accounts at CH, Venkys London Limited well I think they were in Soft rather than Hard Sanctions territory. Selling Armstrong for a suitable fee would solve any outstanding issues, I also expect their wage bill will be lower anyway. I think even factoring in final year of contract, that he's probably worth £10-15m. Those are two clubs in relatively benign scenarios. A few different ones now: Reading Sounds as if they are under an Embargo again. However the apparent lack of pressure to sell players by the Deadline-Accounting Period runs until 30th June- is very strange. They surely have a significant hole to fill to the end of this period, having sold Stadium (to immediate UK parent in 2017/18 and to Chinese parent from immediate UK parent in 2018/19 at a Profit), old Training Ground, Land around Stadium and loaned Aluko to owners Chinese Club for £3m in 2018/19. Despite all this, their position is problematic. Not just to 2021 but going into 2021/22- a deadline is a deadline, he'll they even turned down a bid for Moore in 2018, Loader 2019 and perhaps Swift 2020! They appear to be disregarding entirely aspects of the Regulations. Stoke Was going to post a little bit about my confusion as to why Clucas is currently available on a free as per Nixon, but will cost £3m after June?? Have to assume there is some kind of FFP link there, though Wimmer, Lindsay, potentially NDiaye have all gone and they are clearly working hard to shift players, indeed have been since January 2020 when they loaned a load out. Allen has also been linked with a move and there are a clutch of others who possibly need shifting, albeit unsure by when: Bauer, Martins Indi, Etebo, Afobe, Gregory, Vokes. However their position is about to improve. Reports that they have accepted that Nathan Collins is off to Burnley for £12m. This was mooted a few weeks ago, assume that Stoke were holding out for a greater fee or bidding war. Academy Product=£12m Profit. Anyway this combined with continued efforts to cut back and working with the EFL, points deductions suddenly start to look a bit less likely- big contrast to Reading?? The two regulars in this thread. Derby They still seem to be under Embargo and rightly so. There are many reasons why they would merit an Embargo. Even if they got through to 2021, that mooted £31m loss in 2018/19, that is the new Starting point for the cycle. The Stadium Sale drops off and that takes its place- as we know, it's 2018/19, combined average of 2019/20 and 2020/21 and going into 2021/22! Future Financial Information, T+1 etc. Also possibly of interest- or possibly not- the Confirmation Statements for Club DCFC Limited, The Derby County FC Academy Limited and Stadia DCFC Limited are all showing as overdue at CH- as for that matter is Sevco 5112 Limited albeit in that case, it's the 2020 one that's overdue never mind 2021!! No Accounts for all those companies, the Club or Gellaw Newco 203 Limited for 2018/19 despite the extension and if nothing in 9 days, it'll be two years worth that are overdue!? They're due by end of June. Let's call it 2 weeks as it can take a few days to process. Some other Confirmation Statements might also be due soon but not really looked in depth. Sheffield Wednesday In theory a fantastic FFP position as the Stadium Sale rolled forward to 2018/19 after the Independent Panel Ruling. In practice, will the EFL accept in effect a double benefit? Wages may have dropped, certainly in 2020/21. I don't understand how they're getting away with other issues though. Players can invoke their notice period so what gives. Reports are that no full payment since February ie that was the last time. PFA appear to be involved, and it's not like some won't have interest either. Windass eg is linked with Stoke, Millwall, Fulham I think, possibly more. Millwall in fact I believe had a bid rejected for him. Reports suggest that he's valued at £2m. Borner was set to go back to Germany on a free but that seems to have stalled. Seemed a pragmatic deal-allowed to go to Hannover on a free in lieu of cash owed to him, wants to go back for family reasons- joined on a free too, not a profit but a net saving all the same. One local report did suggest that once all those released finally off the payroll that the situation would improve significantly but that's not good enough. Well it will improve matters but outstanding money due is outstanding money due!! 15 day notice also set in stone. As well as Windass and the proposed return to Germany for Borner, I'd also suggest that with injuries in some cases being a caveat, Bannan, Dunkley, Iorfa, Paterson off the top of my head could all attract interest for one reason or another. Urhoghide too but unsure of his contractual situation.

  12. The first podcast is pretty political and I was particularly interested in what that section of the forum listen too, but fair enough. At least I didn't imagine it. Yes like the Carlin ones too. His voice is very settling. I struggle with the episode length as I usually listen while going to sleep and lose my track.

  14. £40k per year for that role doesn’t seem a lot unless I’ve missed something. Better than the under 23s manager job which from memory was advertised at £35k per year. Maybe reduce wage players wage bill by 0.5% and pay these people proper wages to attract quality

  15. Good thread, there are so many these days the only way to find them seems to be wors of mouth. I don't have any political ones in my list, and most of what I listen to is on BBC Sounds but I can recommend.... In Our Time - Classic History discussions on.... well just about any subject that happened before yesterday. Two Colin Murray ones, an interview based one which was called At Home With, but has turned into Midnight Meets, some truly excellent interviews. The other is Blood on the Tracks a music discussion show. Kermode and Mayo's Film Review, speaks for itself really. Possibly the most well known, the Infinite Monkey Cage with Professor Brian Cox and Robin Ince. I also like some of the fictional stuff like The Lovecraft Investigations and Cipher. Always open to more though.

  16. Bridge from Landsdown to hotel has always been part of the plans - would want the prawn sandwich brigade to be a able to stumble to their beds + wedding receptions etc.

  17. This application is the only official plans there have been but even the original illustrative images had a linked bridge to the lansdown. The main intention being access to the suites in the upper lansdown as there won’t be much other facilities along the side of the arena. Although the arena will have a relatively small concourse, they could of course open up the lansdown concourse for concerts/live events

  19. Official site says 'Interim' coach and implies for the new season. No mention of Oxtoby. Hmmm. Lauren was a backroom staff member for a good few years and knows the club, but has not been here for the last four. I hope this is a good call by those who make the decisions and that it will be a foundation for a drive to return to the WSL. We'll wait for news about the playing squad and if that makes a difference.

  20. Zero affordable housing being provided as part of the sporting quarter plans, based on financial viability. That's a pretty poor look.

  21. THE ROBINS FOUNDATION TACKLE LONELINESS FRIDAY, JUNE 18TH 2021 This week people and organisations have come together to raise awareness for loneliness. It's no surprise that this past year has left a lot of people feeling lonely and isolated. As socialising was put on hold, those who had previously relied on attending weekly sessions for their social interactions really struggled. This was very much the case for some of the players of the Bristol City Walking Football team. When Covid-19 first hit back in March 2020 and sessions had to stop Lee Gillett - the Health and Well-being Lead at the Robins Foundation was conscious that some of the elderly players in the walking football team would find it difficult. To tackle this Lee would call to check in on players who lived alone for a chat and to make sure they had everything they needed. Lee would also knock on the player's doors that lived locally to him, for a chat and to drop off sport's equipment so players were able to stay active at home. For many of the players walking football means a lot more than just meeting up with friends and playing football, as for some it is the only social interaction they have. Pre-covid the players would stay after sessions had finished, for a cup of tea and coffee to catch up and check-in with one another. As a team, they would also have quiz nights and organise social events throughout the year. These formed friendships and solid support group has kept many of the players going when they were struggling with their own mental health issues or going through difficult periods of their lives. Lee Gillett said, "Our walking football sessions are much more than just a kick about, we have created a team spirit where we support each other on and off the pitch." To get involved and join the walking football team, feel free to come to the sessions below. Tuesday’s at Imperial Sports Ground South Bristol, BS14 9EA. 10:30am - 11:30am. Cost: £4 (Outdoors) Thursday’s at Imperial Sports Ground South Bristol, BS14 9EA. 10:30am - 11:30am. Cost: £4 (Outdoors) Should you require any additional information on these sessions, please contact the Robins Foundation on 0117 963 0636 or email: lee.gillett@bcfc.co.uk If you or anyone you know feels lonely or struggling please contact Samaritans Call: 116 123 Email: jo@samaritans.org

  22. So when will we start to see clubs in questioned actually sanctioned? i guess relegation for derby is unlikely now (god knows why it’s all taking so long to conclude what are obvious misdemeanours) are we just going to have weeks, months, years of discussions without any action ever being taken? sheff weds for example, and any club for that matter, that fails to pay their players should be struck with an immediate points sanction for the current or following season depending on if it occurs during or in off season. So why the red tape and why are clubs allowed to continue their fuckery for so long with little or no consequence?
