  1. Getting rid of a present club employee convicted of an offence carried out whilst in the employment of the club would not be the same as hiring one who was convicted 5-6 years ago and with no apparent repeat of those offences since is it? If you don’t believe in second chances that’s fine but to put a narrative out there that they will do the right thing and we haven’t is bizarre quite honestly.

  2. Completely different situations. simpson was not a city player when the incident happened, went to court, sentenced, served his ‘sentence’, appears to have turned his life around and several years later signs for city Barton is the incumbent rovers manager, has a court case hanging over him, has a long history of violence, has allegedly attacked his wife and if found guilty should rightly be sacked

  4. Quite. The usual gas head tactic is to try and deflect anything they do with something we’ve done but looking at their thread, quite rightly, 95% are keeping on point. Disappointing to then come on our forum to see 1/2 trying to compare what is going on over there with the Simpson situation…..any excuse to have a got at our club it seems

  6. The correct offence is one of Battery. Ultimately she has injuries, and this will be a case based no doubt, on the 999 call to emergency services; and the accounts of the ambulance and Police officers when they turned up. Backed up bybthe Body worn video they wear. The fact that he was bailed, and subsequently charged means that the CPS by their own guidelines consider this is a case of a "realistic prospect of a conviction". Given his previous convictions, which will form a part of a bad character application with the details of those offences read out in court. I find it highly likely that JB will in fact be found guilty. The real question is why is he out on bail at present? He is currently on Crown Court bail for the other trial matter. That is under a surety that he won't commit other offences (thus removing the need for a remand in prison awaiting trial). It will be interesting what position the Judge takes tomorrow.

  7. Borstal as a young man could have prevented all this nonsense. Too late for that now but perhaps he could be confined to the family stand at The Mem. A short sharp shack never did anyone any harm.

  9. One has been found guilty, served his time and gone through a period of reform and returned to his previous life, the other has had repeated incidents of violent behaviour in the past, has two ongoing court cases to answer similar behaviour, and seems completely unable to accept the blame for any of it. But like you say, no moral high ground to be taken...

  10. His skill set puts him in a position where he has to be in the public eye to pursue it. He could be seen as a good role model because he did something terrible, was punished and took steps to improve himself. There are many young people out there that could learn from that. Without labouring the point that has been made time and time again, look at those who have supported his return and ask yourself if they are seeing a positive you are missing. His situation is nothing like Barton's, who appears to be a man either unwilling or unable to change his ways. He also looks for excuses for his behaviour, "he burned my shirt so I used him as an ashtray"! Like that is a commensurate reaction. I don't know anything about Simpson he may well be doing some charity or educational work, I doubt this would be publicised due to the sensitive nature of the subject both to himself and those who it would be helping. I know of several ex-footballers who have been involved in AA work and with other similar organisations, only because they were on different communication skills courses I ran, I don't remember seeing any other publicity regarding their roles. I doubt if you will be changing your mind, but I do think the two cases are hugely different, I don't think it's a fair comparison at all.

  11. I stand by my words, no matter how much stick I’ve taken. My view are that domestic abuse is unforgivable, particularly for people in the public eye. Simpson is welcome to a second chance in a non public eye, role. But as a role model for children and others, he shouldn’t be in the privileged position of being paid to play a game for a living. We could have backed that up by refusing to sign him. We didn’t. The scenarios are different but comparable. Both clubs had the chance to take a stand, on an issue they’ve supposedly supported before. We didn’t even make a comment for several weeks. Obviously, if it had happened whilst DS was employed with us, he’d likely be sacked. But, no doubt, many would be on here wanting to give him a second/third chance. Barton should be sacked and Simpson should be earning his money elsewhere. Not a lot could convince me otherwise, unless DS wants to demonstrate he’s really changed by doing som educational or charity work about his experiences and why DV is wrong. No, didn’t think so.

  14. Completely warped logic. slap your wife about and you’re a milkman, ok to go back to work slap your wife about and you’re a footballer, not ok to go back to work, change your profession and hope somebody gives you a chance domestic abuse is the issue here not what job you do

  16. He’s not a stain on Bristol. He’s not Bristolian and I don’t see why our City or our club should be tarnished because Bristol Rovers and their fans are terrible judges of character.

  17. I don't....you play with fire, you're gonna get burned.... They knew exactly the sort of person they were appointing and most of the fan base celebrated it. They get everything they deserve. I couldn't resist....I'm just surprised that they aren't more comments!

  19. I don't think its a chip, more like a full blown potato head. I expect nothing less from a nothing club with a dwindling fan base with a history of doing nothing yet think they're on a par with the likes of Norwich. They will continue to show a complete lack of respect for the rest of the League Two clubs and even complain that it's not fair that the same clubs "up their game" when playing them.

  24. Indeed it will be a treated as a victimless prosecution. As she has decided not to support the investigation by supplying a victim statement. However the circumstances around the incident, and how the emergency services came to be at the address; allow for these prosecutions to take place. It's there to protect vulnerable, intimidated victims that form the majority of DA victims.

  28. Yep. I've barely seen any mention of Simpson by their fans but, sure enough, there are more than a few of ours bringing him up in order to slag City off.

  31. He's not. That's why he's ended up where he is..! If a former Premier league, high profile footballer ending up at Bristol Rovers isn't the metaphoric laying in the dog shite, at the bottom of a cesspit, then I'm not sure what is..?!

  32. I wonder why there is no coverage of this on the Bristol Live website? They have an article on how they are coping with the cancellation of the Swansea game, and that's about it. Would it be the same silence if it was the Bristol City Manager involved?

  36. Had a good bit of luck today. I got put through as the lucky caller on the BBC Radio Bristol Big Mystery Prize competition. The DJ said to me "How are you feeling?" "Nervous" I replied. "Don't worry he said, it's an easy Maths question, get it right and you win the star prize" "That's a bit of luck" I said "I did Maths at GCSE and A-Level and then I went on to do an HND in Engineering and there's lots of Maths in that" The DJ responded, "Well then it shouldn't be too difficult for you. Ok, Before we start, I can reveal that the Grand Mystery Prize today is 2 VIP Tickets to a Bristol Rovers match of your choice. After the match you'll have the chance to meet the manager and players and you'll get a signed shirt. So, the question you need to answer to win this amazing prize is....... what it 2 plus 2?" "7" I said.

  38. @Riaz I was born in 1943 so could have had a bomb land on my bed until 1945. Just after the war, children were dying of several horrible diseases. I spent two weeks in hospital with measles and a further three weeks in convalecence at Clevedon. Just after a vaccine was introduced. Do we hear much about measles now? Also polio, Mumps, Whooping cough, TB, smallpox and maybe a couple more that I cannot remember. All vaccines have a risk of one death in a very large number. But all of these medical advances turned the average anticipated life span for most "Western" children in the rich and developed countries from around 35 years in the mid 1800's to over 70 by mid 1970's. There is not any guarantee that you reach that age but we all have a much better chance of a life not ridden with illness and early deaths. Hence the big increase in human population numbers in the last forty/fifty years. There is a downside though. I first watched City in April 1950 and got instantly hooked. So if I had died earlier in my life, I would not have had to suffer seven relegations and a helluva lot of crap seasons like the one just passed!

  41. I phoned Heart FM today, to enter their mystery prize competition. The presenter answered and said “Congratulations on being our first caller, all you need to do is answer the following question correctly, to win our Mystery Grand Star Prize!” "That Fantastic!" I called out in delight. "Feel Confident?" The presenter asked, "It's a Maths Question." "Well, I've got a degree in Mathematics from Oxford University," I proudly replied, "and I've taught maths to A level students for the last 20 years.” "Ok then, to win our grand prize of 2 VIP tickets to a Bristol Rovers game and to meet the players after the game, what is 2+2 ?" "7", I replied.
