  1. Bit weird that. So why did they appoint Barton in the first place knowing he has two criminal convictions for violence?

  2. This is a very telling statement on the mentality of anti-maskers, anti-vaxxers and anti-passporters (I am not saying you personally are all of those!). There's no thought at all there of others. You can't even comprehend that people pro mask/vaccine/passport might not be doing things for themselves but out of consideration of others. Personally I have very little fear for myself. I'm double jabbed, reasonably healthy and young enough that covid shouldn't touch me. Bit none of that means I can't catch it and pass it on to somebody who could become very sick or even die. I'm not "cowering" as Sajid Javid would think, I am trying to protect other people. It's the exact same reasoning behind washing my hands after going to the toilet or covering my mouth/nose when I sneeze or cough.

  6. The proof of the pudding will be in the eating and all that....He's gone on record now. If Jailbird is found guilty on either charge, and remains with the club then this will come back and bite him. I would say that he's more likely to be found guilty on the Stendel case because of this now. It's only human nature that people on the jury will have this incident in the back of their minds when deciding guilt in that one, even though they shouldn't allow it to influence their decision. *Edit* What I would say though is that the words are rather hollow given that Jailbird's got a well documented history of proven violence and Wally still offered him a job.

  12. Did you know people have died this very year even though - and get this - they had their seatbelt on? Clear indication they don't work in my eyes and it's all a ploy by Big Seatbelt to enslave us all. What next, seatbelts on bikes? A seatbelt on every chair in the world? Am I going to be banned for sitting down now if the government gets their way? Ridiculous. It's just a slippery slope towards a totalitarian nightmare.

  16. As much as we enjoy taking the piss out of them, that statement and Wael's follow up is simply not funny in any way. It's horrendous, irresponsible and dangerous. To trot out bland platitudes such as the club is against violence in any form when they've employed someone with convictions and pending charges for violence, beggars belief. Still what do you expect if the owner is a man-child. Embarrassing.

  18. Of course Barton is innocent until proven guilty which doesn't stop me having a very low opinion of him but there needs to be some serious questions asked at rovers to release a statement like that? With the press who are reporting on the rovers statement are omitting parts of the statement for legal reasons such as itv below, will thier statement leave them in a precarious legal position? https://www.itv.com/news/westcountry/2021-07-27/rovers-joey-barton-will-not-lead-team-at-pre-season-game-after-assault-charge https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/bristol-rovers-release-statement-after-5702864 Refuge have also spoken out about their statement https://www.refuge.org.uk/refuge-statement-on-joey-bartons-court-appearance/

  19. Look. I'll contact my friends on my government trackable smart phone, get in my car with a government mandated license and insurance, travel to the pub with a government license to serve heavily regulated alcohol (the government has banned the kids I got with from having any though), before going to the city ground regularly inspected by government health and safety teams with multiple licenses, and sitting in my seat as the government have banned terraces so I can't stand. I'll have to have a cigarette on the way though as the government have banned me smoking and drinking in there. What I will NOT acquiesce to though is the government deciding what I can and can't do!

  20. Scared isn't the right word, but to be apprehensive of large crowds at a time when Bristol has 1% of its population carrying the virus is fair enough. Double-jabbing provides immunity for 90%-95%. You will not know if you're in the minority for whom it hasn't worked until you catch it.

  21. My friend who is 50 was double jabbed but is currently in RUH with covid. My take on it is that if he hadn’t been vaccinated he would have been a lot worse. His boyfriend also had covid at the same time but recovered with little or no symptoms.

  22. Sadly the "family" club has never seemed more ironic. What shame that club continue to bring (on and off the field) to our city. The sooner they go the better. Nobody needs them.

  23. I rarely say anything complimentary about their fans however the majority (on social media at least) seem appalled by that statement. So credit where it’s due. The club however are clearly intent on supporting him no matter what so it’s going to be interesting to see what spin they come out with in their next statement. Probably some kind of “treat em mean keep em keen” approach. They'd have been better off just keeping their mouths shut rather than make themselves look utterly stupid... Remember ladies, if some thug kicks you in the head it’s a ‘victimless crime’ ?

  24. I posted the sad emoji to some comments - simply because I cannot believe how desperate his wife must be to accept this behaviour. I can only assume (and I shouldn't) that it's because of the children (keeping the 'family unit' together) or she is so afraid of him, that she dropped the complaint (as there seems to be no doubt a 999 call was made). I can only feel such deep pity and sadness that a woman has to live like this in 2021 in a 'civilized' country. If it's fear - surely there must be restraining orders - and with the money that is within the family, she should be able to hide safely until the law does its thing. If it's to keep the family together - I can tell you now from a friend, that seeing your dad beat the living daylights out of your mum has lifelong consequences - she is better with the kids and supervised visits from Dad. If she's dropping it to keep in the 'good life' - I honestly don't know what to think about her. How much money is worth the odd black-eye? A Bloodied nose? I really hope that's not the case. If it is - the children are better off away from both of them in all honesty. Hopefully the Police can find CCTV and charge Barton accordingly - and throw the book at him. I honestly can't think why a woman would stand there covered in her own blood, after calling the Police, and then when they arrive, say she made it up? It has to be fear of Barton surely? What an awful situation for the children. I'm guessing a whole lot more will come out in due course - I really thought men had moved on from this. Clearly there is much, much more work to be done.

  25. The Pandremix problem - a very small number of serious side effects in 12-16-year-olds - were observable within weeks. They didn't suddenly come to light years after vaccination. The mechanism of how a sudden rise in immune response could trigger narcolepsy in a very tiny number of adolescents is now understood. Although Pandemrix was within product safety limits, it had gone through Phase III trials involving 6,000 volunteers, it was withdrawn for use in this age range as other vaccines that protected against H1N1 were available and these were used instead on this cohort. In total, around 17 cases of narcolepsy were linked to this particular vaccine out of 30 million doses administered. Most countries using the vaccine did not record any raised incidence rates of narcolepsy following their Avian Flu immunisation campaigns. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30122647/ In the case of the various Covid vaccines, Phase III trials were conducted on several hundred thousand people 15 months ago and they've gone on to be administered to 2,000% more people than received the Avian Flu vaccines. Serious side effects reporting has been negligible given the vast number of doses administered. In every Covid vaccine approved for use in this country, SSE are well within normal medicinal guidelines. Because there is a multiplicity of choice available, as with the H1N1 jab, we were even able to switch AZ away from certain age groups from an overabundance of caution. Taking AZ if you're under 30 is still safer than getting on an aeroplane. However other Covid vaccines were even safer, so we are using them. So, to answer your patronising question: Yes, I do understand how vaccines work and yes, I already know about Pandemrix. However, it appears you still do not understand how vaccines work or understand statistical risk.

  31. Personally the only fear I have had throughout the pandemic is that I might be infected and pass it on to somebody who then died. I'm glad and not surprised you behave responsibly but please do think of protecting yourself. This article yesterday was heartbreaking. For some people, the moment the ambulance arrives is the time they start expressing regrets about not receiving a coronavirus vaccine. For others, it’s the death of a loved one. Healthcare workers and Covid patients have spoken out about growing numbers who, once faced with the serious reality of catching the virus, realise that they made a huge mistake. Dr Samantha Batt-Rawden, a senior intensive care registrar, said she had only come across one patient in critical care who had received both vaccination doses, and that the “vast majority” of people she was seeing were “completely unvaccinated”. Batt-Rawden said it was difficult to witness the look of regret on patient’s faces when they became very unwell and needed to go on a ventilator. “You can see it dawn on them that they potentially made the biggest mistake of their lives [in not getting the vaccine], which is really hard,” she said, adding that she had overheard people telling family members about their remorse. The patients who pull through are for ever changed – their Covid scepticism disappears once they have experienced time in intensive care, Batt-Rawden said. One patient who regrets not being inoculated is teacher Abderrahmane Fadil, who nearly died from the virus. Speaking from his hospital bed last month, he said: “At the moment I am Covid-19 positive … My road to recovery has been excellent and positive and I am looking forward to getting the jab as soon as I get out of the hospital. I advise everyone to get it. I for one am prepared to go to hell to get the jab, instead of waiting for the disease to devour each and every one of us,” he said. Glenn Barratt passed away in the Diana, Princess of Wales hospital in Grimsby after fighting coronavirus for weeks. The 51-year-old, from Cleethorpes, had opted not to have the vaccine. But his final words to bedside nurses and doctors were: “I wish I had.” His family has now urged others not to make the same mistake. Ken Meech, a cousin, said if his relative had been vaccinated, “he would still be with us today”. He told the Staffordshire newspaper the Sentinel: “I’m not a doom-monger or someone who’s telling you what you should do or not do. After all, we are supposed to live in a free world. But this is one of the saddest times of my life, losing my cousin, Big Glenn Barratt, to Covid.” Carla Hodges, 35, whose stepfather, Leslie Lawrenson, 58, died at home from the virus on 2 July and whose mother ended up in hospital, said it had been a big wake-up call on the importance of inoculation. Lawrenson did not believe in vaccines. “My mother did not have the vaccine either, although she had underlying health conditions such as diabetes,” Hodges said. She said her mother was now looking to get a jab: “She is very lucky to still be here … I know not getting vaccinated is a massive regret of my mother’s. She was embarrassed to tell hospital staff she had not had the jab.” Batt-Rawden said families often ask if anything could have been done to prevent the situation. “You know that there is something that the patient could have had which would have meant their life is not at risk, and it is a question we get asked a lot,” she said, adding that in some instances relatives have actively discouraged their loved ones from getting vaccinated. A lot of the misinformation came from social media, she said. Batt-Rawden said she felt guilty when patients came in and were not protected, as she thinks “we have failed them as a system and a country”. She said doctors will continue to speak up, advising anyone on the fence to get the jab. “The side-effects are mild … Listen to doctors who work in intensive care, because we are heartbroken every day and don’t want you to end up here.”

  35. Without Mrs B giving evidence, here’s my informed opinion of what might make up the prosecution case: 1. The 999 call - we can see from the article that Mrs B called the police and said JB has throttled then kicked her. 2. Upon police arrival they’ll have undoubtedly been wearing body worn video. It’ll be interesting to see at what point Mrs B retracted her accusation. Did she continue it to police upon their arrival? Did the two other people present tell the police what had happened and was this captured on body worn video? 3. the injury. Said to be a half golf ball sized lump. 4. previous incidents between the two parties whether prosecuted or not. 5. bad character. Now, we know JB likes the odd assault, but in order to be used as evidence is has to be pretty strikingly similar. You can’t just tell a judge - he’s got convictions for assault - there are proper and quite tough hoops to jump through to allow bad character to be allowed in a trial. 6. CCTV - as someone mentioned above - this took place outside. There might be Cctv. all in all, cps only charge people if they think there’s a realistic prospect of conviction. So there’s definitely evidence here. Injury plus initial complaint is a good start - I wonder what else there might be… I wonder what JB’s behaviour was like when those officers and their body worn video turned up?! it’ll be interesting that’s for sure.

  36. My biggest fear about these lunatics spouting unjustifiable nonsense is the way their nonsense will be used to try to bully those with genuinely held concerns about the direction of travel with regard to vaccine passports and that is dangerous. Personally I am really uncomfortable with the removal of access to normal things like football, concerts etc if you have not received 2 vaccinations. It does not sit well at all.

  37. In my opinion (former criminal lawyer) 1) & 2) won't happen, largely becuase it would send an awful message to those who may wish to raise a domestic violence complaint in future. As for 1), I guess there could be a witness summons for her attendance (not even sure the judge/mags would go for that, nor whether the CPS would even ask for one), but if she then appears at court, and takes the stand, the prosecution would have to treat her as a hostile witness and cross examine her on any original statement (is there even one?); as you can imagine, cross-examining your own witness is not a good look, and in the absence of independent evidence, is a tough ask for the prosecutor. Regards 2), there is a potential for it to happen, but would have to be an extreme case (think serious sexual offence allegations). So we are left with the 999 call, and bodycam (likely only showing any aftermath)...potential for a bad character application perhaps (although hard for me to say without reviewing the file). Unless I am missing something, this case will be incredibly difficult to secure a conviction on, if it even gets that far and the CPS do offer evidence. The prosecutor on the day will have their work cut out, and will not have been the one who made the decision to charge/progress with the matter. I know there are good policy reasons why domestic abuse convictions should be pursued in the absence of the complainant's support, but that doesn't make it any easier for the lawyer on the day.

  38. As I said, not sure of the details. What I read , and as it was Newspaper stories I can't say 100% true, she received a kick to the temple which left a golfball size lump. Now I would think it would warrant a visit to the Doctor at least. I also read, from early on , that his Wife didn't want to press charges. Not sure how this is going ahead if there is no one to be witness or to press charges as victim. Although I think calling it a victimless crime is a poor phrase to use.

  40. They are quoting the crown prosecutor. But what the CPS meant by this and what ‘victimless crime’ means in common usage are very different. It’s pretty grim to pull out that quote and base the official club statement on it. from cps website on domestic abuse: ‘’While victims are rightly at the centre of everything we do, the CPS prosecutes on behalf of the Crown and for the good of the wider public. That means we can prosecute domestic abusers without the support or direct involvement of victims through ‘evidence-led prosecutions’ - for example relying on witness accounts or CCTV footage.’’

  49. Getting rid of a present club employee convicted of an offence carried out whilst in the employment of the club would not be the same as hiring one who was convicted 5-6 years ago and with no apparent repeat of those offences since is it? If you don’t believe in second chances that’s fine but to put a narrative out there that they will do the right thing and we haven’t is bizarre quite honestly.
