  1. What a fun player he was to watch. Would rather watch him over someone relatively consistent but functional and boring like O’Dowda any day.

  2. One of the last games I watched with my late grandad, he never swore in his life. He did that night, we were sat in front of the rovers directors and he gave them the w'anchor sign and said, "pick ee out the stingers you barstewards".

  3. I posted last year and said the kids we have just are not good enough for this level. Got shot down but has anything changed - No not for me. Not one of them is doing anything in the first team. It’s time we had a good look at the academy and maybe even follow the Brentford model and scrap it and just have a B Tram. Of the current crop the best we have is Seymenyo who can’t score for toffee. Edwards I like but no where near the first team. Then - Scott will never score a goal if he plays 20 games. Needs 2 year on loan in L1 then we will see. Bakinson no manger likes him due to work rate HNM again another who will never score a goal for the club O’Leary never will make the first team Bell - to light weight. Pearson - where did he go? The list goes on. Will any of them actually become a first team player for us? Before every jumps in. Think about we can not win a game in the last 12 months. We had to clear out so much crap and deadwood. They have all had some game time and none them are really what I would call a first team player (Scott won’t start Friday and won’t see him start again) It’s time to take a look at these kids and think why we only produce players for L1/2 standard. The days of Bryan,Booby and Kelly look like they are a long way off at the moment. I know this won’t be popular as everyone loves the kids but I just don’t see it. They are as much of the problem as the recruitment team we have.

  4. Why do they keep being main headline on the website? Does anyone care? Surely they should have own website like the rugby team?

  5. No, Remember people wanted to sell Reid for 300k because he will never be good enough Or wondering why Bryan is in the squad it must be because he's bristolian It's a stupid ******* post full stop,

  7. Personally I feel alright about out kids, as for once they are actually kids. They're 20 or under for the most part and looking decent - not fully fledged Championship players and maybe never will be, but that's fine by me. My issue is with the Vyner / Moore / O'Dowdas (examples, not saying I dislike them) of the squad who get treated like kids, but actually have a decent amount of experience and are well into their 20s. I'd rather keep and gamble on a Scott or Massengo for the next few years than one of those three.

  8. Amazing Prem class player. We were lucky to have him. It’s obvious to see why his career has gone from strength to strength since leaving City.

  12. Sorry Graham - JET and Trundle are two of my favourite players to watch ever so I won’t hear a bad word about either! Davefevs could prove me wrong with 10 graphs and Mr Popadopolous could bring in a well sourced FFP report to also prove me wrong and I still wouldn’t accept it ? I also really enjoyed watching Ivan Sproule in those days.

  14. Bobby Reid was 24 and a half before he showed what he can really do. Bryan had a couple of loans out before he showed his quality. Players like Kelly only come around every 10 years or so usually. I think Scott is the next one with that potential. Now’s not the time to criticise the young players - it’s the seasoned pros who should be performing better.

  17. Bristol City is a football club. It fields multiple teams across multiple competitions. Men's and Women's first teams, then numerous age group teams. The men's first XI may be the most prominent part of the club, but it's not the only part. It's a club, literally a group of people joined by a common interest - in this case football. You can ignore the women's team - I largely do. However, from time to time they will be more relevant in the news than the men's. I believe they played today and so I assume they are lead story today. That's fine, the men's team was the lead yesterday. It's a club, all are welcome, there's multiple teams and they all get covered in the same football section of the site.

  18. Don't usually comment on 'Match Day Threads' but just got back from Middlesbrough and some time with friends, two of whom were also at the match (as 'boro fans). First time I have been at a City match since February 2019, so that was good. The Pukka pie at The Riverside was also very piping hot, so good as was plenty of free parking. Walked back to the car with the two clearly tactically aware 'boro fans, they used words and phrases like what @Davefevs does ???. They thought that they should have won easily, but didn't and that Atkinson has the potential to be a great player. They were also impressed by the tactical change of Kalas at right back and Weimann playing on the right. Personally I saw a plan, maybe not greatly executed, but at least a plan. To me Martin and Weimann looked rusty, which is not unexpected. The relationship between Baker/Atkinson/King/James was interesting, but all so new. Scott has talent, but like most of the City team was out 'gamed' by 'boro. I travel to enjoy the football, which I did, except for the following. To the 'fan' immediately behind me who spent the whole match telling his kid (I guess 8-10) how 'F-ing sh-te' all the city players were and how particularly 'sh-te' any one was who wasn't a WASP and the foul and abusive terminology used about the non-WASP players, I have have your photo and you have been reported to the police.

  19. Looks like Tammy is off to sign for Roma. Could be a great move. Playing under Jose, can only help improve his game. 34 million with a buyback option set at 68 million (must stay a minimum of 2 seasons). Should help his england chances if he goes to Italy and bangs in 20 plus a season.

  20. Most of us realise that the long winless run is poor, but also that so far this season we have been 30 seconds from a home win & lost by the odd goal today. Hardly a crisis. We could badly do with a win this week but most realise Pearson has limited funds & a tough job on. I feel I could be posting this every week in response to certain posters at present.

  21. Old bean, you seem to have inadvertently staggered into the “take the piss out of Rovers” thread and been perturbed that there’s piss taking of Rovers. Much like when you - Inadvertently staggered into the transfer forum and was discombobulated to see potential transfers discussed - Inadvertently staggered into the politics forum and was horrified to see people with informed opinion on political discourse - Inadvertently staggered into a thread on veganism and was flabbergasted to see vegan based discussion Its a f*ng minefield this place…

  25. I spoke to a few Gashead friends today. One a normally level headed fair bloke, so I value his opinion, said it was the first time ever he had left early. He said loads walked out in protest as it was gettingvwuite nasty in there, so @Bristol Robthis tallies in with what you witnessed. He has two young children and the level of abuse being dished out to Barton and Lines was like nothing he has heard before. He certainly isn’t a ‘delicate’ fan. He said he actually thought there would be some sort of riot, and there certainly would be if they lose again on Tuesday. It was really hostile. The fans have lost patience with Barton big time.

  27. That goal is right up there with any I have seen scored by a City player, Jimmy Mann v Shilton being one of very few better. I absolutely loved watching him, superb technique, excellent goal scoring record for us & even why we were a bottom six L1 side under SOD, JET was worth paying to see on his own.

  29. Always hate posts that start off as self indulgent as "I said last (year, week, month)", where the poster seems to be trying to say look at me, I'm so clever, my sage like qualities have been proven correct. Forgets to mention all the sh1t posts that have been way off the mark! FWIW, think you are way off the mark now and at the moment, one of the things we have is some excellent youngsters, who may push on, assuming people like you are not quick to get on there backs after each miss placed pass or poor game.

  30. Mods: will we be starting a new Non League Bristol Rovers thread, or will we have to dig out the old one and re-use that?
    3 points
  31. Mate. Have a word with yourself. In terms of Moore, Massengo, Bakinson they are not academy players. Massengo has been in the first team squad since he signed, and was injured pre season hence no involvement - you may recall last year NP playing and praising him, and HNM being one of our one bright spots. As for the rest Scott - played very well first two games and only 18. If he does go out on loan eventually that’s fine, but it doesn’t mean he’s not making it. Do me a favour - show me how many 18 year olds are playing Championship football regularly. You can’t. You’re trying to prove your point by picking on one who is!! O’Leary - He’s played at this level for a stretch. He’s played exceptionally well at the level down. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but one of our best players is our GK and we can’t play two. Pearson (it’s Pearson not person) - Involved in pre season. Is he ahead of Weimann currently which is what he’s going for? No. Should he be ahead of an established footballer at this level who we desperately missed last season? No. Does that make him a bad player? No. Bell/Conway/Jannah - see Pearson You appear to think that if someone’s not tearing up the league at 18 they are never going to make it. While simultaneously thinking the one 18 year old who is playing well at this level isn’t going to make it. So, absolutely no reason to keep on 18 year olds who may need loans at lower levels in your opinion. Here’s a few names for you: Ben White - Loaned to Newport in L2 at age 18 Jack Grealish- Loaned to Notts County in L1 at age 18 Harvey Barnes - Loaned to MK Dons in L1 at age 18 All played for England in the last 12 months. But as they were only ready for L1 or below at Bell, Pearsons, Scott’s and Conways age I assume Brighton, Villa and Leicester should have let them go. You’re either a troll or a moron.

  32. You sure that wasn't Barton's post match interview?

  33. Why have we not produced 6 or 7 17 years olds who are immediately ready for Championship football? It's crazy. Interesting OP forgot to mention Janneh who is currently our top goal scorer this season, or Conway who scored last season.
    3 points
  34. I think the OP may have been possessed by the spirit of the departed Ashton Yate. What needs to be understood is that the academy/youth system for years was not fit for purpose. You might see Matt Bryant, Aaron Brown or Joe Bryan come through but it was at best 1 player a year making it to not just our first team, but league football generally. And that was when we were a lower level and there was more chance to get through as there were less overseas players. Where we are now is we’re getting rid of players like Nurse, who move to league one. That says we’re bringing through good players. And it’s only just getting to that point, because the academy has developed. So we have Scott, Conway, Towler, Bell etc (Massengo and Bakinson were bought as non academy players). And behind that, we have Low, Henry, Benarous, Francois. Not all will make it - it’s the fifth hardest league in the world FFS. But right now, we have players with chances. And to make this comment after two games when most of the kids haven’t been playing is a touch bizarre.

  35. With Barton in charge, they won’t get fined, they will be given a bonus.
    3 points
  36. From what I have seen, it’s not that they aren’t good enough, it’s that they simply lack the experience and guidance. Now, if some of the more senior pros stood up and started putting in more solid performances, getting results and leading by example, the younger players would have an opportunity to flourish. Unfortunately, they have been thrown into a team that has a losing mentality and soft under-belly.

  37. Clint Hill has just walked out on them for ‘personal reasons’ and Barton unable to do the press interviews after the game. Its all going to shit….. ???

  38. Morning all, I’ve done a little reading of our greatest ever matchday thread author’s posts and I’ve attempted to write this tribute in his unique style. Truth be told his threads take one of two forms; reminiscing about fixtures of years gone by, or Marvelous historical references that appear to Segway out of nowhere. With history not my strong point I shall attempt the former. It feels entirely fitting that it’s likely that at a little over 1,600 miles away, I’m probably in with a good shout at being the OTIB member who’s geographically closest to Havana, Cuba. Today’s game sees us rekindle our favourite love/hate relationship with Ken Dodd lookalike Neil Warnock and his Middlesbrough team. To reminisce about our fixtures with the kings of smog, I’ll take you back to the 06/07 season. Plying our trade in league one, we’d eventually win promotion back to the championship, finishing second only to a A Scunthorpe team spearheaded by 30 goal Billy Sharpe (wonder what happened to him?) But the 4th round draw of the FA Cup that year would see us draw Gareth Southgate’s Premier League Boro (wonder what happened to him?). A pasting was on the cards as we fell 2 behind to two early goals at Ashton Gate - Yakubu and Malcolm Christie - seemingly irrecoverable, until 50 something minute goals for a player made famous for shouldering the blame in a drunken car crash in Derby and another who didn’t enjoy a short holiday in Reading would score to take the replay to The Cold & probably wet Riverside Stadium. This time we’d go ahead through David Noble only to be pegged back by Mark Viduka. The game would go to extra time, and a late Boom-Boom goal would cancel out Yakubu’s extra time goal to take the game to penalties, which we lost 5-4, the decisive penalties missed by Craig Woodman and scored by future Paedo in the making Adam Johnson. But plucky Bristol City had done a job in those two ties and given themselves the confidence to have the consistency to climb into the Championship. Today’s opponents are a different kettle of fish to that of 06/07. We’re up against our favourite pantomime villain, only this time managed by our own. Not unlike ourselves, Middlesbrough have established themselves as a championship team, only having done so by coming down through the trap door, rather than our upwards trajectory (although this trajectory is somewhat questionable!). I invite you to raise a toast to Hav and all of our other OTIB friends who are now supporting from way up higher than the upper tier of The Lansdown Stand. To those who are no longer with us. COYRs.

  39. They’ve been using this shit excuse for years. If they bothered to fill up the home sections in their tiny stadium every week like any medium sized club would do in a ground that size, their average attendance would be much closer to 10k....but they don’t. Same when they talk about away attendances and claim that smaller grounds in the lower divisions hamper their average away figures....yet they don’t mention that they rarely sell out their allocations in those ‘smaller’ away ends anyway.

  40. Just a small tip. If you’re claiming to be more intelligent than the person you’re responding to, it may be appropriate to respond to what they actually said. I didn’t say Scott would play in the prem, I said he was an 18 year old (ok 17) playing in the championship. If you’re claiming to be intelligent, you might also realise the phrase is “no he won’t” not “now he want”. If you’re claiming to be more intelligent, you might want to remember that in the last five years we’ve produced more than one league footballer from the academy. If you’re claiming to be intelligent, you might want to look up the definition of opinion vs facts. You’re expressing an opinion, not a fact despite what you say. Actually, If you’re claiming to be intelligent, the best thing for you to do might be to stop digging. Because everything you’ve written suggests the opposite.

  41. I think had we played him correctly and utilised his strengths he’d have been much better for us. GJ wanted him to play as a more traditional forward when really he was better in the free role he played for Swansea. In terms of technical ability he was excellent. He also justified his outlay with his playoff final goals.

  47. When NP came in last season he had a bag of shit with regards to the players he inherited and we were already in freefall. A fair few of those players have now gone so now he has a smaller bag of shit and people still expect us to be competitive? This mess isn't of Pearsons making and he has had very little money to spend on players to make things better by bringing in players he actually wants. Anyone who thought or thinks this wouldn't be a long, hard season of struggle needs to re-adjust their thinking a little before pouring scorn on somebody who has been handed an absolute shitstorm of a squad.
