  1. Hate to say it, but the changing demographics of our fan base is going to make it very difficult to get back any sort of atmosphere. Middle class, first generation Bristolians and their children now populate Ashton Gate and whilst their support and money is very welcome, they mostly aren’t going to join in with songs and chants. It’s just the way football is going I’m afraid and there are only a handful of grounds left in the UK that can still generate a good atmosphere.

  2. To answer the OP, not really. James has been good, with an availability record others don’t remotely match. King is a useful squad man, if HNM & Williams were fit (& the latter now looks like experiencing another lay off) then he’d be a sub at best. When you then look at his last 2 seasons & the fact we only thought him worth a year after a short trial, he’s done fine. I do find this Paterson revisionism after yesterday pretty hilarious, the consensus on here (but certainly not my view) in the summer was we were glad to get shot & Golden Boy Liam Walsh (how’s that going?) would be a big miss..

  3. As others have said, I’m praying we have Han-Noah or Atkinson back, preferably both. Can’t say I’d have Bakinson anywhere near the first team.

  5. Thats bollocks, he's not Joey Barton. He is trying to create a different culture and has clearly brought in players that can set an example for that. James in particular has been excellent in most games especially with the right players around him.

  6. Korey had a number of significant injuries when he was with us, and I think we can agree he was a player who left having made a significant, positive contribution to Bristol City becoming an established Championship side - as well as a goal or two! Hopefully people aren't too quick to write off Williams, his reaction to this latest set-back shows how much he wants to succeed on the pitch and I don't think it's too much to ask to expect supporters to rally behind him, rather than throwing comments around like 'sick note'.

  7. On Saturday with plenty of time to think, due to getting stuffed, I wonder how we can continue to give visiting teams such a great time. Our singing section is tucked in a corner with virtually no noise until the game starts. Such a limited range of songs and few that others can understand and join in with. We sing the Dasilva song whether is is good or bad because its one of the few that we have. At the other end !!. We give them a full end behind a goal. Why don't the away fans at the gate get tucked into a top corner somewhere like we do? I started watching City in 1970. The East End then has some pride and character. The song leaders where at the back in the middle and the singing spread out wide to both sides. The noise then would put our current volume to shame. We had a song for each player which didn't need to be a musical master piece. Everyone could hear it and join in. We had real hostility when one of ours was wronged. We briefly heard the far end of the Dolman on Saturday but it soon died out. For Goodness sake. Lets move the singing section to the middle of the East End. Get some simple and decent songs and belt them out and finally lets move the away fans as far away from the pitch as we can. Lets also turn the pre match music down so that at least the fans can be heard. Come on, the team needs help and the noise and encouragement just has to be better

  11. Unfortunately I don't think things will ever be the same. Some of the youngsters won't know any different, but I was lucky enough to remember the days of standing in the East End. 5 or 6 Pints of Natch before the game, a hotdog and a burger from one of the wagons, face all covered in Ketchup and Mustard. Score a goal and you'd end up a good 10 meters from where you were, jumping up and down like a loon hugging someone that you didn't even know. I'll never ever forget that.

  13. Given that we have a relatively small squad, with some players injured or out of favour, what team could Pearson have selected that would have enabled us to compete with Bournemouth yesterday? We have a squad of 26, take off the keeper, the injured in Semenyo, Cundy, Atkinson, Massengo. Then there's the 2 fullbacks that are keeping Dasilva and Simpson out. Then players that are really too young and inexperienced to face that sort of opposition, the likes of Janneh, Bell, Scott. Add in those currently out of favour, like Wells, Bakinson, Vyner and Palmer, because they've really not provided enough to be selected consistently and what are we left with? The answer, the team selected yesterday, with the out of favour players making the subs bench along with the keeper. The only difference for me yesterday, would have been to have Dasilva wide left instead of O'Dowda but, that's based on hindsight. I think Pearson's hands are tied to a certain extent at the moment and, he had little choice except to go with his tried and tested players and formation. It just happened that Bournemouth were mobile and slick, as well as tenacious in winning the ball back when we did eventually get it. Especially compared to our ageing midfield, that also experienced bad luck, with the out of position Williams being forced off. Our full backs have been playing 3rd/4th tier football and are still coming to terms with the pace and movement, they got hammered yesterday with little protection from those in front and those inside of them. I'm sure some would argue that Palmer, Scott and Wells should start, though I think we'd have been even more poorly organised and focused had that happened. Bournemouth were just too quick of mind and foot for our lads yesterday and our manager is trying to hold the club together with what he has available, cut him some slack and get behind the team. We must be patient and support the club during this tough time, I know it's frustrating but, get on the managers and players backs and, you will knock the major thing going for us, which has been sadly missing for five years. That's team spirit and, the desire to succeed while helping each other, let's nurture it and help the younger players get better, knocking them won't help in the slightest.

  21. Personally I thought it was significant that Bournemouth targeted James on Saturday. Every time he got the ball they pressed him hard in two's and even threes, I think Parker as a midfielder himself recognised how important he is in linking the team together. If you go back in the build up to their opening goal, you will see that they worked to dispossess him, which then left us exposed because players had started to move forward to support him. He is the type of player that fans don't necessarily recognised as a key part of the team, but opposition teams do.

  22. @headhunterI think the answer depends on whether you want to take Saturday, where all of the front 6 were below par and judge them both on that…or whether you want to evaluate over the dozen games. I think generally James and King have been decent enough. Both do a lot of unseen work, both do the basics well. I think the expectation of King at 32 having played little in the past 2 years was lower than James, and I think both have met the levels I expected. In terms of James he’s yet to have a settled partner (King, Massengo, Bakinson), which from a team point of view hasn’t helped us either. Re set-pieces, I think you’re missing that they’ve improved massively. We are a huge threat from corners and set-pieces, have as many goals from them this season so far as we did all last season in total (league and cup). If you look at just how many assists James has you’ll only see a 1 against his name, the free-kick for King to head-home v Boro. But of course he doesn’t get the credit for Thompson’s og v Peterborough, or the Pring nod-down to Martin at Reading, nor the numerous corners that have found their target but the recipient not converting. Shots against is a team thing, you can’t just level at the midfield. As a team we are still finding our way, we are doing okay results wise. I wouldn’t say we’ve really clicked yet, flashes at best. agree, he’s been consistent, doing all the right things in the main. He’s not a flashy player, but a player who you can spend 5 minutes just watching and see what he does. He reads the game well. As many have said on other threads, it’s never gonna look good when you’re chasing the ball and your opponent all over the park. agree, King a squad player, no harm in that either. He’s contributed in different ways. In some games, he’s worked well with James, knowing when to sit and allow James forward. James did look like he was labouring a bit on Saturday. Him and King were dragged away from their positions by ineffective play elsewhere, but weren’t great themselves either. Poor team performance, the front 6 all playing a part in letting down the rest of the team.

  24. Really? When he first arrived and was played through the middle he was picking up goals with absolutely no service. By no means tearing the league apart but was scoring regularly from half chances in the penalty area. I've not got an answer on how to get the best from him, but playing him regularly and in position seems to be a good start to me.

We reminisced about the hat trick he scored against Crewe in my first game at Ashton Gate and he said that he still looks out for our result. Id like to have asked a little more. But I was a little star struck! cheers all!

  30. Okay, let’s be honest, we got stuffed today and had we lost 5 nil, it would have been appropriate. That said they are pretty much a Premiership side and started this season with a £20 odd million parachute payment. It’s disappointing as for whatever reason, there was no press, commitment or apparent effort from some but there we go, it happens. I would however comment that we are most certainly going the right way - just 4 losses in 12 games this season, a minus 1 goal difference, just 4 points off the play offs? Is NP not what we have been asking for for a long time, so can we not just get behind his honest approach and give him the three seasons he suggested he needs to turn us around? I never bet against City but, if I did, today would have been the day, just about everything was up against us, and B’Muff did really well, fair play to them. Their quality in depth is incredible to be fair and I have no doubt they will go up this season. I am glad we have Tuesday to come when we go again. Okay today was always going to be hard but, let’s be honest we will have some much easier games to come, the home win will come. Finally, how wonderful to see all fans join together for the minutes applause in the 7th minute - let’s hope the young lad Brooks responds well to treatment and is given the all clear in the near future, well done to all who quite rightly joined in, so nice to see and hear!

  34. It was a total shambles - The FA, Met and the Government should hold their heads...the fine and behind closed doors game are irrelevant. The damage to this country's well built reputation for holding successful major international events (96 Euros and 2012 Olympics) has been shattered. The final's organisation reflected the current leadership of this country...arrogant, unprepared and shambolic in its approach. The ticketless hoards that packed the Olympic Way personified an international view that English football fans are jingoistic, self-indulgent, undisciplined and out of control thugs..... even when the vast majority are not! We can kiss goodbyeee to any thoughts of world cup finals here, even if we have the best stadia and infrastructure in Europe...it makes me weep to think that Germany and Spain will have hosted 2 world cups each since we last did..... No doubt the powers that be and terminally stupid will say it's the "dirty foreigner's fault that we are not chosen, Brexit and all that...

  41. I'm right behind you on this one, EA, and as someone that isn't colourblind. I replied on the thread on Twitter to Wes, I work for Opta at the ground and it was nigh on impossible to tell some of the players numbers from in the Lansdown Stand. Didn't the PA get the wrong name when announcing the first goal or did I dream it? Have noticed the issue with kits a few times this year and from my perspective, it needs sorting. Reading's kit this season doesn't have the large white patch/red number combo this year, presumably because they are playing in a new 125th anniversary kit. Sheffield Wednesday's are tricky, Rovers numbers are hard to pick out too this season. And as for West Brom's kits..... aaarrgghhhh!!!

  42. Thing is I don't think it needs more rules. Legislation and further regulation should be the last resort, and personally I think the tools are already in place. We simply need clubs, leagues, and kit designers to be made aware of the existing FA and UEFA guidance, and then for them to implement it and bear it in mind when deciding on kit design and selection. Regarding Saturday's game: I don't think a green kit is ever wise, but if the marketing guys at Bournemouth want it then that's fine. But they should then consider the guidance and realise that the time to use that kit is against Fulham, Swansea, Derby, Coventry, or any other team that plays in white or lighter blue. To use it against teams that play in red is inconsiderate. This season I am seeing more fan pressure, and also some response from clubs (see the Huddersfield example above). I am hopeful. My greatest thanks is to someone like yourself who despite not being colourblind, has shown interest, support and compassion for those people who do. Thank you.

I don’t think it was the formation yesterday The players need to be firing on full cylinders to match the better teams and treat it like a cup tie Not sure why they weren’t at the races but the injury to JW may not have helped as he seems like one of the key characters and main players around the club now

  48. Give me bridge delays any day. For some of us the 112 mile journey home topped out at 190 miles, two sections of the M4 eastbound closed, pretty much the whole of the M25 South, anticlockwise closed (all for roadworks so forget A303 or route via Bracknell) forcing all traffic from the West to use the clockwise M25 North and M11 to get to South East London. Guess what, that resulted in accidents. Highways England my ****.....
