Unfortunately the club didn’t meet the ambitions of the players (Bryan, Flint and Reid) in 17/18. Bryan allegedly had offers in the Jan window but club wanted him to stay to see if he could help get us up. We tailed off badly as we all know, and all 3 left in the summer, plus Magnússon (and Djuric) netting us £20m+. We bought Weimann, Hunt and Webster, loaned Kalas and Dasilva, then Palmer. It was the lowest amount in fees we paid in LJs reign, which was surprising with the amount brought in. Re the 3 players that left: I bumped into Joe Bryan at Cribbs just after our season ended. There was all kinds of shit flying around that he was in Barbados (or somewhere like that) on a pre-booked holiday because he’d downed tool second half of the season and therefore knew we wouldn’t get to the play-offs. Yet here he was chatting for about half an hour with me and (my) Joe, who he’d met several times at the Hospice, whilst waiting for his brother to pick up the wedding suits. He was pretty open about his future. Said he loved it at City, but needed a new challenge. It wasn’t about money, he said he’d been brought up in a pretty privileged position. It was obvious he wasn’t staying. Flint, we’d managed to delay his sale by 12 months, again, a case of him wanting to do the best he could in a short career that started late for him. I think it was play-offs or bust that season for him. Reid was just a case of him having a stellar season and not being able to do anything about it. Cardiff was a strange choice, but from the club point of view, you take the highest bidder. So, yes, we should’ve built on that season, but the failure to get to the playoffs meant a mini-rebuild was needed. In some respects finishing 8th (best finish under LJ) in 18/19 (we finished 11th in 17/18) justified it, but I think many would agree we weren’t the same team that season, we didn’t play great, but results kept us moving up the league (was it 13 unbeaten?), but having got into the top 6 we let didn’t win in 5, got a couple of results (West Brom (h) Sheff Utd (a)) before we didn’t win any of our last 5. It was more boom and bust. And then we lost Kelly (Bryan succession planning), Pack (the key to the system) and Webster. Even Paterson going on loan to Derby had an impact. In fairness to Johnson, he kept results going, but it wasn’t great to watch. We didn’t really improve the squad, we just made loans permanent at a cost of £14m, and Nagy for Pack was a huge risk that ultimately failed and in part cost LJ his job. So we lost 6 or 7 of our best / key players over two summers….then Brownhill. I don’t think any replacement player, other than Webster for Flint, albeit, for 1 season only, has been an upgrade. Couple that with the plethora of players that went this summer and it’s hardly surprising we are where we are now. I can just imagine what LJ would be like if he had to deal with the current squad and it’s size. It is a real shame. What we need to do next (and are doing) is to continue to cut the wage bill and then recruit young, hungry players (like Ayling, Freeman etc) and develop our own. We need to match the ambitions of the likes of Scott, Massengo (who has been up and down this season) and Semenyo, guiding them with signings like Wilbraham, Elliott and James. We could actually have a very low cost squad in 18 months, that then gives us the opportunity to “go for it”. It’s about getting through this season intact. Feels like a waste, it is, but I don’t think there’s any other way.

Nope. It was purely that the club has picked up he has been playing well, so want to get him back to coach that out of him. Needs to reacquaint himself with the BCFC "system".

A lot would depend on how well the guys in question are known to the stewards, ticket office, club in general etc. If they're the kind of fan who has an ST in the same seat every season, lives round the corner and everyone just knows, then it'll be tricky for them to get back in. If they're a bit more occasional, or quiet then yeh grow a beard, dye your hair, get your mate to buy you POTD in cash, and 'enjoy' Oldham's impending relegation from the front row. It's a private ban so any 'breach' is unlikely to be criminal trespass, instead they'd have to sue him under the normal tort of trepass. Oldham get fewer than 5k fans as well, so it's not gunna be that tricky to find three guys in that small a crowd. Honestly this guy should pay a lawyer £100 to write a letter of response breaking down every sentence and saying 'prove this', 'prove that' etc. If he cba with that then getting it into the national press will probably help him. Agreed, although my feeling is that as it's not specified, Oldham/Brown would quite like to know as well. If it was a specific thing then they'd name it. Nebulous, vague accusations such as in that letter mean "You're doing something we don't like, it's not bad enough to actually peg you under any particular law, but we just don't want to deal with it. Please F off."

What utter tosh. He was running hard, working the channels and starting every press from the front in the first half. (Didn't notice so much second half as I was in the South stand). Just because the press isn't successful is not Martin's fault. Blame those around him who should be making sure Martin's man has no outlet ball. He did not stop working hard first 45 yesterday. Not his fault that most long balls pumped up long from the back favour a taller more powerful Centre Half. Most of the time all he can do is make it awkward for the Centre half to get a clean header. Not saying he should not be replaced but some of the criticism on here is wide of the mark, just spend 10 minutes in a game watching him and his work rate rather than jumping to preconceived ideas.

I,ve always wondered how the home club enforce these bans anyway. I accept that if a banned person is caught entering the stadium, it is a criminal offence, however a big coat, hat and facemask would render anyone unrecognisable. They should just carry on regardless, obviously though with someone else buying their ticket.

Good overview that. Marlon Pack and Korey Smith were so important to that team. Never got my head around them leaving. I can see Lansdown trying to sell off/find new ££ backers for the football part of Bristol Sport at some stage soon. If City was run as a football club and not an accountants business model (Bristol Sport), some of those players would have stayed. From what I heard, there was very little attempt to keep some of those players. It was all about getting ££££s in. In effect selling the family silver and buying brass. Awful mistakes made. Put the club back 10 years.

Yep.........the reason the defence lets us down is because Pearson keeps putting the wrong players in the wrong positions? I just don't get it? How can a man who played his career as a central defender, get our defensive set up so wrong? He keeps coming out with the same BS after most games......that's 19 defeats in 38 games since he was appointed, I try to support him, but his bizarre choices are beginning to change my mind. As was mentioned on Bristol Live, when asked why Pring did not play, Pearson stated, he felt he was not ready to play? When asked by the reporter, why this was the case.......Pearson replied "I don't know".......so why didn't you ask him?...your his manager, and supposed leader of men? Ha! It's your pheckin job to know why he was unable to play? If their was a problem, then address it, and if you prefer for it not to be made public...then say so, Do NOT say "I don't know"? I worry about Pearson?

Oh, I agree with Root trying to assert his authority, even if he never will shake off the public schoolboy who wouldn’t say boo to a goose tag. As far as the batting’s concerned, I don’t think it’s a lack of experience down under at all. Most of these players have played either Tests, white ball, BBL, Lions, or even Grade cricket in Australia before. It’s got more to do with your spot-on final point IMO. These batting collapses have become the norm for England, at home and abroad, and the finger of blame at the ECB. They absolutely are reaping what they sow, and it’s a brain-dead strategy when you consider Test match cricket in England remains their biggest cash cow.

I think Root is trying to assert some authority with the bowlers, as they aren't doing as they're told imo. It's not like he wasn't critical of the batting. That's clearly the main concern, though you could argue our batsman are also seriously lacking in practice/experience in Aussie conditions (certainly the openers where the main problem lies). And that's the thing with Broad and Anderson - they should know how to bowl in these conditions, given their experience. Notwithstanding this, the whole squad is being hung out to dry by the ECB who haven't given Root and the Test side the support it has needed for years, with white ball cricket prioritised instead. You reap what you sow.

The demands are much higher now and the science has improved dramatically. Just because it was done in the past doesn't make it right. It can take upto 48 hours to recover after a competitive game, and upto 72 hours for performance markers to return to "peak" levels. That;s just muscular recovery, doesn't account for knocks and injuries Factor in that that's assuming perfect recovery protocol which isn't always the case. I was lucky enough to spend the day with an England footballer recently, he'd played the night before and I asked him about recovery. It was an 8pm kick off at home, he got back to his house about 2 hours after the end of the game, but then didn't get to sleep until about 5am because of the adrenaline etc from the game. He was up at 7am to do the school run, and then had the day with us fulfilling sponsorship dutires. That's going to seriously impair recovery Of course they are very much pampered compared to the game 50 years ago, but looking after players bodies has to be a good thing right?

Players give it the big un on the pitch as do fans in the stand. I sit in the Dolman, don’t judge me, and regularly laugh at some people who get all het up stand and gesticulate at the away fans threatening to come over and invite them outside,I presume for a coffee and chat, when in all reality they are just big pussies who don’t need a covid pass but a brain cell pass.

Some of the football under LJ come the final 12-14 months wasn’t better than what we have now.
