Richard Gould and Nigel Pearson must take huge credit in getting these players to sign. RG goes about his business in the background and NP doesn’t bullshit the fan base. Whilst he is not everyone’s cup of tea, I am so glad he is at our football clubs and is slowly trying to change it for the best and the future after he has gone. Really looking forward to next season. COYR28 points

Some good signings but let’s not get carried away here. It’s a huge step up for both Wilson and Sykes, and we still need a couple more additions in key areas Its Great to see us get our business done early though15 points

Sounds like your average 20 something to be honest. Just be thankful the only interviews we’re hearing are from the players and not wanky sound bites from a jumped up CEO.13 points

Back in the early 1980s, Ian Botham went into his favourite restaurant in the West Indies and ordered the turtle soup. The Head Chef came out of the kitchen to apologise personally as they couldn't make him any turtle soup. "WHY NOT????" aske Botham, "I come here everytime we're on tour and I love your turtle soup so much that I've been telling people all over the world about it" The chef replied: "The problem is, Mr Botham, that we cannot get them to put their heads out of their shells so we cannot cut off their heads and boil them. As soon as they know we're coming they hide away and there's no getting them out." "Ah, I see your problem" replied Botham, "leave it to me" and he goes out into the kitchen. picks up a turtle, sticks his finger swiftly up its bum. the turtle's head shoots out, eyes bulging, Botham chops his head off then proceeds to the next one. When he's done 5 or 6 of them he passes them over and says "now you can make my turtle soup" The staff are amazed and ask where he learned to do such a neat trick. "Oh, it's easy" says Botham. "It's the only way we can get an MCC tie on Gladstone Small."13 points

Nice one. What a top pro he is. He worked so hard after his cruciate injury and deserves everything positive that he gets.12 points

It's started already. Fans of other clubs are getting us mixed up with Arsenal.12 points

There's an absence of overtly dissenting voices on this thread so if for no other reason let me try out the argument against (besides the revenue/attendance point several have flagged*). It comes down to whether people who follow football see themselves as supporters or spectators. I think the vast majority will say the former - and I think the two are materially different. Support is active not passive, it's meant to represent a level of effort and investment to consummate your allegiance. A spectator is a viewer: passive and purely entertainment focussed. Every one of us I hope remembers their first game, the first time they walked out into a stand (normally into Ashton Gate), the first time they saw live football and the scale of their ground. We need to protect the effort required to experience that buzz, to be able to properly support your club. Otherwise some people will never experience it or others never get addicted to it. Football is not meant to be 'Netflix' or fans will get bored at Bristol City Season 3 Episode 9 and switch over to Forest Season 1 Episode 1 and that might be that. Allegiance requires effort. Allegiance is also about proximity - a convention that would be destroyed by unlocking TV access to any club. And it is about being able to support (as in physically get behind) your team. Even for away games the VPN stuff hasn't sat right with me. How many people hand on heart would have ever made that extra effort to get to an amazing away game if they never had to? Making an alternative and universal point of access to football that requires no effort may stop large numbers - even generations - of people from having experiences that bond them to us. You don't build affinity and loyalty without effort and experiences. A viewer is someone who can switch off. Get people hooked on these experiences, and as we all know, we all come back. (*And obviously the revenue/attendance point is not to be ignored: at a time when football finances are precarious, it's insanity to introduce a lower cost / lower commitment access point).12 points

Benzema, Griezmann and Arnautovic on the field and old runs-about-and-points bags first. Lovely.11 points

How often is a defender named player of the season, in any division? A very very exciting signing...11 points

Q are now just that bloke outside Oceana at 3am. 3 strawpedos, 7 pints, and 6 jagers down. His mates have all disappeared, the girl he was talking to has just got in a taxi with her mates, it's cold and he dropped his kebab. He will literally go with anyone that looks at him.11 points

If these signings live up to anything near the potential we might have a fun season…We’ll all of us who haven’t been trying to get Pearson sacked in the media social or traditional.10 points

Ain’t that the truth. Each signing so far has been about the player. How it should be. Pearson, Gould and whoever else is involved, know it’s not about them, and / or aren’t insecure enough to need to make it about them. Refreshing..9 points

Delighted for him- a real hard worker and dedicated player but so much more besides- the goals, the assists, the movement- the playing ouf of position, sacrificing himself for the good of the team a while back, sign of his versatility. Deserves all the good things that happen to him.9 points

The same Hull who went on to draw with promotion chasing Forest in their next game? It was a good result for us but there had been a fair few signs before then things were improving. Oh - and the old "if we didn't have our best players" thing is bizarre. You could say that about any club. Maybe their incredible impact is something to congratulate Pearson for instead of just implying he was a lucky bystander?9 points

I don’t want to come across colour blindest… but I have a whole day planned of getting nothing done by watching this thread. Can we keep it about Kane Wilson?9 points

All clubs are potentially huge and size should matter not as to how they are treated cf their peers. EFL Board have long since been known to favour certain clubs over others, that's why they did for Macclesfield who messed them around once too often despite being no worse off than other clubs the EFL bent over backwards to save. Derby have surpassed Macclesfield in the contempt with which they treat and hold their peers, the EFL and supporters in general. EFL have made mistakes but need to stop the rot today and if that requires the politically unpopular permanent explusion of Derby County, that's a price worth paying.8 points

What's also clear, is there is a plan and getting through last season was part of that plan,7 points

Not bad for someone who just runs around a lot. Well done AW7 points

...impressed, seemed very level headed. One observation - of how many cities in Britain might it be expected that a 22 year old footballer could use the word 'gorgeous'. I know we all take it for granted that incoming players will say positive things about eh ground and the facilities...but as an exile it's nice to hear people appreciating Bristol itself.7 points

Exciting times. I never understood the doom and gloom and the “I’m not renewing my season ticket because I’m not enjoying it” sentiment. It’s the Championship FFS - a great division so what’s not to like; far better than being in league one (or worse). Plus we have an experienced manager who knows what he is doing at this level. We have some great young talent. We improved in the latter part of the season. Yes some of these signings are unproven at this level but this is the market we are in - and we will have beaten a lot of other clubs to Kane Wilson. On Twitter you can see Watford fans who are cheesed off that they missed out (despite the manager connection). I’d rather we were signing a young league two player of the season than an experienced championship has been or journeyman. I’m also pleased that we have prioritised the defence and done our business really early. Our club is in safe hands.6 points

Think he was banned a while back. Not before he got me a week's ban for responding to his never-ending stream of misery though.6 points

Both, to the best of my knowledge, are hard working and honest people, who, it would seem, are always willing to pass the glory on to those who play the game!6 points

I appreciate it may sound silly, but I did get the impression that, results aside, we really had been improving throughout the season. I accept that the "if we didn't have our best players" argument applies to all teams, as does the plaintive 'If only our best players hadn't been injured', although it might be argued justifiably that injuries possibly affected us more than most, given the size (and age) of our squad. One might also add the 'Oh, if only we hadn't conceded so many last minute goals' or 'if only we had received the numerous penalties we should have been awarded', but, and there is always a but, had we not conceded those late goals/been awarded those penalties, we would have finished comfortably mid table. In short, far from being a 'lucky Northern bystander', I am pretty confident that NP is slowly and surely getting us back on the right track, something I feel will be demonstrated this season.6 points

You think the impact of Antoine & Weimann was nothing to do with Pearson Wow Your views still on Pearson , For somebody who was a persistent drum beater for Johnson when he was clearly going backwards and spending cash like water ...... Just Wow Maybe have a think back to the complete car crash Pearson inherited and who played a part in it6 points

I've said before that as a City pessimist, I think we are in for a very good season. Looking at the club's intro to our new shirts with a team photo of the 1955 Third South champions, it hit me like a ton of bricks that in that side, including some who were not in that picture like Tony Cook, Alec Eisentrager and Arnie Rodgers, they are all "LEADERS" in different ways. Captain Jack White, Ginger Peacock, Tommy Burden who was captain of Leeds before coming to us, Arther Milton faced up to tremendous fast bowling as an opening batsman, both fell backs and of course leading by example, Big John Atyeo. Pearson is building a club with leaders. From Chris Martin, Klose, Weimann, Joe Williams, Alex Scott, Aymen Benarous and all three newcomers, we now have leaders that have replaced the "after you Claude, shrinking violets" that MA and LJ collected at enormous cost. PS. I'm assuming that Kane Wilson is arriving soon.6 points

A ‘good human’ no doubt. In fact, appears to pass that measure with flying colours, and then some. So I wish him every success and happiness in the future (off the field) - the World needs more people like him. However, no player encapsulates what has been wrong and why I fell ‘out of love’ with my Club over past 6 years more than he. The Club’s CoD ‘era’ has finally ended. Praise be. Roll on the Pearson revolution!!6 points

Delighted with this! I have to say, the early indications of this transfer window are extremely exciting. But also, the long-term impact this could have on our progress as a club. We actually look to be signing for the future, and not just the present (something we have been guilty of in the past). Well done to Nige, Gould and the recruitment team so far.5 points
