  1. On this topic, I think we need to wait for NB to speak. It’s tragic any career is cut short due to injury. It’s highly personal and given the nature of the injury - very sensitive. He got a fair bit of shit on here for being a sick note but he always put in a shift. A real warrior. Wish the bloke all the best

  2. Just got married too I believe. Imagine he’s having a lovely honeymoon. I’m perfectly happy with how club have positioned this, and perfectly happy to let the club or Bakes give us the next update. It’s clearly a delicate issue, and I don’t think it needs ***** on twitter asking the club “where’s Bakes” with an agenda, nor someone replying “surely he can’t still be concussed”….it’s effing insensitive, and crass.

  3. People might not agree with Le Tissier's opinions, but he is entitled to express what he believes. Free speech is a right which has cost him dearly. However, he has not broken any law. Carragher, on the other hand, has got off very lightly. Not surprised Le Tissier raises the question of fairness,

  5. Tipping us to go down (with Reading & Birmingham) on Sky this morning. Thank **** for that, as there can’t be a pundit who knows less than him, he said Rotherham would survive (ok then) but then had to be prompted because he clearly didn’t know their manager’s name. Absolute *******.

  6. Really! Spitting is a physical assault which is a criminal offence and should have been charged and sacked for it. Le Tissiers only made comments what he thought was correct at the time. Sad world we live in to compare the two.

  8. I am a bit disappointed to see that we play both Sunderland and Wigan in our early opening fixtures. Whilst they are teams from the division below they often make up for their deficiencies with extra motivation and energy. Also they are used to winning. I much prefer to play them after six to eight weeks when they run out of steam and the bubble has burst. So we will need to be on our game from the off to avoid dropped points. I don’t agree with Bristol Live that it is an easy start.

  10. Never been much of big I am however. 1991 / 92 Sunderland away.we left briz village at 6am on Shem tours.I had bought a 24 pack of Stella between myself big jas and Martin .On arriving at Chester le street we then had 3 rounds each and staggered back to the coach . onto the game 3 nil up .Ithink Andy Cole scored twice and leroy rosenröter the third? We won 3-1 After the game the 2 litre bottle of blackthorn was drank and then we stopped at Mecca of the midlands- Ashby de la zouch for refreshments as well. Absolutely steaming when the coach dropped us back in briz village about 2am. Back up the Good Intent at 12 the next day joey and his lightweight wife can do one Im 51 now and can no longer do this.

  11. So, fixtures out today. Mate of mines an Ipswich fan and they have Rovers away on Valentine’s Day. Hes told her she’s in for a great night under the sheets. He just hasn’t told her the sheets are the minimal grounds tents…

  13. Spent a very enjoyable 90 odd mins watching that and watching Scott like a hawk , imagining if I was reporting back to a potential suitor in the Premier League Tried to watch for any positives and negatives Getting the negatives out of the way they amounted to two very minor ones , the only ones I could even mention in the 90 Arguing with Lino and lucky not to get yellow , and one unnecessary ‘flick’ late on losing possession - the sum total of negatives in 90 mins As for the positives , there were numerous , the obvious , his first touch , composure , use of the ball , his defensive work , Winning the ball , winning free kicks ....the list was tick tick tick ,and possibly what impressed me as much as any of the obvious , was his maturity and game intelligence and awareness without the ball , constantly on the move , adjusting his position, filling holes , blocking passing lanes , in a high block - so impressive for someone of that age , and when we had the ball , always looking to make an angle to receive the ball. Id describe it personally as a very accomplished all round performance , and particularly for one his age If you were desperately looking for any comment on his overall make up as a player , I can only suggest that he ideally would like an extra yard of pace, he’s certainly not slow , but compared to some he’s not blistering It would help occasionally when he slips past somebody but he cant do much about that and compensates with his touch , opponent awareness and cleverness Add to how easily he changed position in the game , and the trust in him to do so - He can literally play any role in middle of park , as a 10 , or wide in a three I also think he has a real competitive edge to him , a bit of fire edging on ruthless if needed Another real tick for me He even looks like he’s rolled out of a Manchester or Liverpool suburb , not Jersey I really think his choice of destination when he departs is vital - I’d be totally looking for a side that are possession based Credit to the whole team , in their discipline and shape - very impressive , and bloody hell do we have some monsters coming through Half The team were built like Linford Christie , as powerful , and nearly as quick , but with the technical ability of top end players - frightening

  15. Did you spot the bit in the first half when Chucka broke forward. Most players would have broken forward thinking about receiving a through ball later on. Not Alex Scott. He was marked (not tight, but his marker in-touch), so what did he do? He stood still. His marker continued running back towards goal, Chucka then had an easy passing option, sideways / slightly forward to Scott, who got it, opened his body, and sprayed a simple pass out to Norton-Cuffy bombing forward. Just a simple example of his game maturity, and perhaps something he learned at Southampton, because Alan Ball snr, once said Matt Le Tissier is the best player at getting into space by standing still. That wasn’t a dig at his laziness, it was a compliment of how some players think they have to run forwards, when your marker will always follow you. By standing still your marker will often ease off getting tight, thinking you are no longer a danger. It buys you time.

  16. In all honesty I think the Club has played a blinder with the Nathan Baker situation. It's clearly a, diificult time for all concerned, but especially himself and his family. He needs all the time and help he can get and without any pressure being placed upon him. I am sure news will be forthcoming in time but we need to remain patient and wish him all the best with his future whatever the outcome.

  21. Good luck KP. Given game time in a system and with players that play to his strengths (possession based team with strikers who play on the shoulder) he may well do quite well. With quality movement he can pick a pass for sure. Don't know if that is Cov, but it can't be a less good fit than us. Even if he has a good first season I've got my doubts he'll be successful at this level long term. Glad he got the move and glad to have him off the wage bill here. As far as I know he never made a fuss at all when here though, even when out the squad. Best wishes from me

  22. Fantastic post LR - at that point we had Afobe up front with Palmer and Weimann behind him - we were on fire, we were ripping teams to shreds ... such a shame we didn’t get to see how that panned out - I really rated Palmer, he’s obviously a very skilful footballer, such a shame it didn’t work out for him here - someone will build a team around him and benefit hugely ...

  25. You'd like to think they'd ask him that now though, wouldn't you! Q: Who's getting relegated, Lee? A: Bristol City Q: Why've you picked them then? No-one's getting angry about Lee Hendrie - "he ain't worth it". But some people do have opinions about the absolute state of football broadcasting.

  26. Right, I couldn't find any articles or data online, so I did it myself over lunch. Just looking at the results of the newly promoted sides over the first 6 games of the season for the past 7 seasons - i.e. from our own promotion until now. A small sample but I'm not exactly operating with state funding here. So, across the 126 games that I looked at the newly promoted sides accumulated, between them, a grand total of 132 points, at an average of 6.29 points each (mode of 5). Barely more than 1 point per game on average. 16 of these 132 points were gained in matches played between newly promoted sides (6 games). So, out of 120 matches against teams in either the Championship or Premier League in the prior season, newly promoted sides have accumulated 116 points, or fewer than 1 per game. Essentially, the most likely result in an early game between an 'old' team and a newly promoted side, is that the 'old' team wins. "But City are classic City, we always lose to them!" I hear you cry. Bollocks. Over that same period we've played a newly promoted side 6 times. We won 4 and drew 2 of those. That includes 2 wins and 1 draw in opening day fixtures. There is the odd outlier of course. In 2019/20 Charlton Athletic went unbeaten across their first 6, winning 4 and drawing 2 games to have a huge 14 points from their first 6 matches. They finished 22nd and went down. The past two seasons have been particularly brutal starts for the new boys. In those 36 matches newly promoted teams have won only 4 games, and in 2020/21 Wycombe managed to lose all of their first 6 games. So bring on the new boys. Bring us some points early doors and let's get the party started.

  27. Another ******* revisionist who looked away when we finishing in the top half of the table and having a decent League Cup run. 2017-18 11th 2018-19. 8th 2019-20. 12th Poor for the last 2 seasons I grant you, but there is no need to exaggerate,

  31. It's reasonable and fair for pundits to predict us to go down, We've struggled for 32 months now, or since just before the start of lock down

  32. To be fair, the ‘sick note’ reputation was reasonable based on his record but I think the rumours about Baker’s medical situation in recent months has added context to his many early withdrawals in matches which has enabled fans to understand this a bit more. Think it’s fair to say we’re all now united with respect and best wishes for NB and I echo the sentiments of previous posts.

  33. Tiss has some interesting perspectives to say the least, I actually have some time for his perspectives - I don't agree with a lot of them but I can see where they are coming from and that is an important place e.g. freedom - what should be held IMHO as more important than life/death. JC should have been sacked for what he did and if he was 10 years older and less relevant then probably would have been.

  34. As I said in another thread earlier, I think this is a bit of an overreaction to them being a 'big club'. Finishing in the top half would be an absolutely incredible achievement for any promoted team, let alone finishing in the top 6. The Twitter comments below the Hendie video are full of Sunderland fans acknowledging that he's talking rubbish. Many of Sunderland's own fans are saying they'd be happy to just stay up. I don't follow League 1 closely at all, but I gather that their promotion was far from comfortable - bear in mind they only finished 5th. I appreciate Sunderland have good long term potential, but in the short term they're not really a team that should be feared. And perhaps they will do brilliantly this season, but if they do, it won't be "because they're Sunderland", "because they have so many fans", or "because they're destined to be a top flight club".

  35. If only they put in the contract "You will be able to come back at the end of the season and justify your prediction won't you?"
    3 points
  36. From the outside looking in, I can see why people might predict us to struggle. But don’t get worked up over it. The last time we were fancied for the drop by most pundits was 2017-18 and we nearly made the playoffs. Then, the last time we were really tipped as contenders was when we brought in Coppell and David James, which looked like a stupid prediction about an hour into the season.

  37. Because someone's paying him money to have an opinion, so at least make an effort to have a considered opinion, informed by some facts and solid evidence. Otherwise, your opinion's worth shit. You're entitled to it but it's worth shit. It's the equivalent of him not making the effort to train during the week, then turning up on a Saturday and playing shit. Can you turn up to your job, trot out a load of lazy shite and be paid for it? You're right though, Lee Hendrie's opinion ain't worth anyone's time or money.

  38. Agreed. And the acquisition of a couple of lower league players plus one from non-league, whilst the likes of Palmer and O'Dowda will register negatively with them. They can't be arsed to do a bit of research to find out exactly what is happening at clubs, just lazy, lazy, comments which is to be expected.

  41. I reckon we could be missing a trick here, attendances could skyrocket if the club declared Ashton Gate a 'Sweet Caroline' free-zone, we could attract followers of cricket, darts, rugby and who knows whatever else. Just need to stop that nonsense noise from being uttered in BS3!

  46. The rules apply to a 'Transfer of an Undertaking' so until 'NewCo' appears agreed, until then the players are bound by their contracts. The TUPE rules allow an individual to refuse the transfer to a NewCo or to treat the contract as ending through breach of contract on the transfer. So in reality there is a case.
