  1. If you’re looking for real ale pubs (aka craft beer) after watching the rugby in more sports orientated bar there are lots of great choices all around the Harbourside area to check out. The Golden Guinea and nearby Ostrich Inn at Bathurst Basin (300 yds from St Mary Redcliffe church, towards Ashton) are both great pubs. The Shakespeare on the Waterfront, adjacent to the Arnolfini arts place, is another very central great pub. Just off the Centre, in Denmark St is The Smoke and Mirrors pub, which is a pub which does magician shows (no, it is good!) and they have people doing tricks in the bar if you don’t want to pay to watch a show. The Christmas Steps pub - at the bottom of….Christmas Steps, is another pub full of character as is the walk up the steps to….Zerodegrees micro brewery (proper craft, not ale) who also do good food. King St is the major area for lots of bars, the Beer Emporium is downstairs and has a huge range of beers. I’d avoid the Small Bar opposite as it charges pint prices for 2/3rds glasses! Oh and King St Brewhouse is good as is the Llandoger arrow opposite. That’s probably enough for your first day, someone else can advise for the rest of your trip ?.
  2. I’m amazed the Gas let this guy slip under their radar in the transfer window? Still time though, he intends to play until 60 ?. Kazuyoshi Miura, 55, signs for Portuguese second-division side Oliveirense on loan https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/64488275
  3. Indeed - and he gets a lift home to Guernsey on a private jet with Uncle Steve whenever he wants ?.
  4. Agreed, good analogy. Along the way we’ve had some sausages burnt by crap chefs and have refined our recipes to work towards at least one Michelin star. Hopefully we can continue with the full a la carte restaurant menu choices rather than donner kebab take away option offered by Irene’s greasy spoon cafe..
  5. No coverage for us on the local BBC news sports coverage this evening? All other games covered but not even a mention for us. Explanation needed from Whiteladies Rd!
  6. It’s not baguette shaped and it’s not French but as you appreciate a decent loaf I recommend you try the ‘low GI’ (not glucose intolerant..) bread in Lidl? it’s a really crusty loaf (round boule - French!) that is so light and tasty ??. £1:59 a pop and you’ll probably need to get there early ish to be sure of getting one, although some stores also bake during the day so it’s a bit of pot luck if it’s in stock.
  7. That phrase was about the limit of his comic genius for me. Always came on stage with a big leek to play to his adoring Welsh fans.
  8. Thanks, at last a considered opinion from a professional physician.
  9. I was only thinking the same myself the other day. He’s had a steep and difficult learning curve under Nige but he’s dealt with it (and considering the grief he got from some fans, a bit deservedly so because we wanted him to do well) in a very mature way. If Kalas is off, he’ll be the rock in our defence for quite a while I think, unless someone comes in with a totally unexpected but cheeky offer…no idea what his contract situation is.
  10. The YTL Arena = Years Too Late Another delaying tactic to not spend too much money until we get out of this recession I think? Add the falling prices of houses and no surprise they’re happy to sit on their hands for a while - it may even give them time to get the train connections sorted out as well.
  11. You may have heard the old proverb of building a house of straw? No point in somehow getting a promotion by luck and then not being able to realistically stay there You won’t attract decent footballers to a club where they see little investment or a long term plan to build the infrastructure together with the right people, then slowly (too slow for many) you can transition - avoiding FFP, to really build a good team and hopefully hang onto to your local talent you’ve brought on through the academy set up to add to the mix. SL is supporting various sports, not just rugby and football, the plan is for a ‘Sporting Quarter’ to allow local talent to flourish and leaving a legacy for the entire City to be proud of. The next phase, to build a new home for Bristol Flyers is well underway as is the surrounding homes etc which will help sustain the business during non match days. Not getting close promotion is something 21 out of the 24 teams in the Championship have to live with. No one sets out to fail but you need a grasp on reality so you don’t feel entitled to a place in the top leagues like many other ‘big’ teams e.g. Derby have done. You’ll never attract another investor with serious cash and when Wael finally wakes up and realises he on the road to nowhere ? he’ll be off asap.
  12. When he leaves, as with everything in life - it moves on, the club will be seen as much better run, better assets like ground with real stands, (not tents flapping in the wind) or an academy set up which is producing a number of very promising footballers and a decent training ground than many others in the EFL. The chance to part own the club will attract more suitors than even Irene did on her busiest Saturday night! Not many people really like their bosses. By nature of the fact the boss decides what to pay you and when to sack you, he’ll never, really, be your ‘mate’. Nigel Pearson doesn’t want to be funny and spend his time being narcissistic to get attention from journalists on newspapers who’s business is to write in English yet don’t know how to spell or use grammar correctly - he is a man manager who tries (not always successful) to help people realise their potential on a tough profession (check how many fail to get professional contracts after being with a club since about 8…). Anyway, you shouldn’t be on here this time of night, Mummy will be upset you’re not tucked up in bed as you’ve got big school tomorrow.
  13. A lot of it is down to the demography of the people posting? A generation (or two) who don’t bother saving for something and get instant credit and want everything now. No patience and no understanding that if it was that easy everyone would be changing managers every few months - like on Football Manager etc. Yep, we all pay our hard earned money and think we have a right to criticise players when they - like we all do, make mistakes in our jobs. Instead of outright calling players out try shouting out some actual encouragement to the team you support, especially when things aren’t going as we’d like. It’s not being a happy clapper, it’s trying to get the best out of what we’ve got and confidence is so vital - yet it’s free! Keep faith with what is happening at all levels of the club, I’m sure we’re getting around a very long corner at last.
  14. This is what I found when searching for definition of a ‘fan’:- A fan, aficionado, or supporter is someone who has an intense, occasionally overwhelming liking and enthusiasm for a sporting club, person, group of persons, or trend. Fans constitute a fanbase or fandom. They often show their enthusiasm by starting a club, blogging, or promoting the object of their interest. How exactly is the club treating these people to stop them being fans (other than not winning enough games to increase the enthusiasm bit!) ? Are these same people fans of KFC or McD’s or are they customers - how can we spot them in the crowd on a match day? They’re just going to make themselves - and the club they allege to love, look very embarrassing.
  15. I didn’t. The bloke is vanity personified, every match I watched during the WC, within 5 mins of kickoff, he was ‘picked out’ by the camera crew, sat there all smug at his own self importance. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him doing the same at the burial.
  16. No it won’t / can’t work! If you pay NP (and all his support team) off it’ll cost millions pushing us over FFP - which will then definitely get us a points deduction. I don’t think that will help getting a new manager in, as there’ll be even less money in the kitty to spend after we’ve had to pay everyone off and get a new team in place. We all want the club to succeed - I just don’t understand why some of you don’t understand the rules of FFP!
  17. Quite a bizarre topic for the BBC to cover, must be that combination of no Prem, no England joy and pre Christmas? Collecting data for serious injuries (I guess you have to collect it all to do that..) is worth doing but the 1% which includes asthma is odd as that must be a pre-condition? The fact it may be triggered at a match shouldn’t be a reason to include it as it can be triggered by so many known everyday things so why go if you think it’ll happen and you need to report it.
  18. For Sale - 90’s iconic puppets Sooty and Sweep. Any offer accepted - I just want them off my hands..
  19. I’ve been watching so much football I’ve got Qataracts
  20. They should complain to Rediffusion (ask your grandad…) and demand they’re money back!
  21. I don’t think it’s quite as blatant as a conspiracy but FIFA definitely want to expand their reach and market. Africa with its huge - but poor (but getting better educated and then richer..), populations are too big a market not to possibly ‘favour’ a few more bits of luck than they would normally get over the course of a game. It would also help balance the inequality of too many predominantly white European nations against the African nations who despite producing some amazing individual players over the years have not been seen to have been given the same opportunities at national team level? Other than that we scored less goals than the French, bon nuit et au revoir?
  22. Red DNA

    Ronaldo

Maybe he could team up with Prince Andrew for a few rounds of golf? Exactly the reason why he done it, no dignity or sportsmanship, all attention seeking to boost his profile one last time before he hopefully disappears off the radar and back to work as a waiter in his restaurant in Madeira.
