  1. Name the four teams who, in their history, have finished runners up in England's top division, and runners up in the FA Cup (don't have to have been in the same season), but have never won either trophy?
  2. The 12-12 (or 14-12 to Germany if penalty shootouts are included) counts West Germany and unified Germany, but does not include England's four games against East Germany, of which England won three and drew the other. The most recent game against East Germany was in 1984; England won 1-0 thanks to a great goal by Bryan Robson. Video as follows: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euarQ4cK9qw All of the results are on the following page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/England%E2%80%93Germany_football_rivalry
  3. And I should point out (before anyone else does) that Wikipedia says Germany lead 14-12 overall, as they count the 1990 and 1996 penalty shootouts. The FIFA website treats 90 and 96 as draws (as I believe FIFA officially record tournament games that go to penalties as draws, for ranking points purposes), and says it's 12-12 overall. If you want to include penalties, Germany would be a 5th team on the list.
  4. Bear in mind we had never lost to Germany prior to 1968 - most of the meetings before then were England wins, and those that weren't were draws. Since 2000 it's 4-3 to Germany (England won in the meetings at Euro 2000, the 5-1 in Munich in 2001, and the 2008 friendly in Berlin. Germany's four wins were 1-0 at Wembley in 2000, 4-1 in Bloemfontein in 2010, 2-1 at Wembley in a 2007 friendly, and 1-0 in a friendly at Wembley last November),
  5. Yes, they beat us in the 98 world cup and also in Euro 2000, and in a 1982 world cup qualifier in Bucharest. We've only beaten them twice (at the 1970 world cup and a friendly in 1939). The other six meetings have been draws.
  6. We've beaten Croatia four times (friendly at Ipswich, Euro 2004 game in Lisbon, 4-1 in Zagreb when Walcott got a hattrick, and 5-1 at Wembley) and only lost to them twice (2-0 in Zagreb when Neville scored an OG, and 3-2 at Wembley). Our record v Portugal is won 9, drawn 10, lost 3.
  7. Yes, Romania completes the set.
  8. Uruguay - yes. Chile and Costa Rica - no (Chile is two wins apiece, and we've never played Costa Rica before). The last country is one we've lost two high profile matches against in the relatively recent past.
  9. Brazil and Italy - yes. Argentina and Germany - no (England v Germany is twelve wins apiece). Two left.
  10. Here's a question for you: in the history of international football, only four teams have defeated England more times than England have defeated them. Can you name them?
  11. Batistuta = Batty's tutor. It's a trick question which I've heard before.
  12. Trick question. Batty and Batistuta.
  13. Incorrect. Dukla played Celtic in the semis in 1967, but neither Slavia nor Sparta have ever made the semis (neither has any other side from Prague). Edit: Slavia's European record: http://www.uefa.com/teamsandplayers/teams/club=52498/profile/history/index.html Sparta's European record: http://www.uefa.com/teamsandplayers/teams/club=50033/profile/history/index.html
  14. Is correct! Took me a while to get that right when I was asked the same question.
  15. Which current player has scored in the Premier League, Championship, Leagues One and Two, the FA Cup, League Cup, Football League Trophy, the FA Trophy, the Champions League, the Europa League, the Scottish Premier League, the Scottish Cup, the Scottish League Cup, the Conference Premier and the Conference South?
  16. Correct. Rapid Vienna made the semis in 1961, and Austria Vienna made the semis in 1979.
  17. No to all three I'm afraid. A clue: the last one is on the same river as two of the other answers.
  18. Indeed it is. Dundee United very nearly got to the final in 1984. They won the first leg of their semi final against Roma 2-0, but very controversially lost the second leg 3-0 amid bribery allegations (link here http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/jim-mclean-admits-feels-sick-1097937 ). Roma progressed to the final and lost to Liverpool on penalties (the 'Grobbelaar's wobbly knee impression' final).
