I like this idea - I think getting rid of replays makes a lot of sense, but from R1 onwards the team in the lower division getting to choose whether the game is played home or away would add an interesting element to it. If it’s two teams in the same league the tie just gets played as it was drawn.

Think the lower ranked team is automatically at home in Germany? Although I like the uncertainty of not knowing at the draw whether you have more chance of a giant killing at home versus a trip to a big ground.

Marlon going ‘home’ to captain his boyhood hometown team to promotion. Fairytale.

Read an article the other day I think where MP said he had extra comp tickets written into his contract, as he had so many friends and relatives wanting them!

It's low for a short-term single set of any 5 games. Fairly often you'd see at least one team winning 4 or even 5 in a row and so posting 12 or 15 points across 5 games.

But, if we were able to maintain that form over all 46 games, we'd hit 101 points, so it's very high in terms of actual games -> points conversion.

Yup all true. As I said kinda reflects the top sides struggling at the moment

I'm not sure if this is worthy of it's own thread, though since I don't post often and I've a vast amount of respect for the posters on this board, plus invest a lot of time reading others' comments with enthusiasm, I hope I'll be humoured / spared!

Two key players being out today triggered my thoughts. If we think about for example, a sales team, an office team, production, ANother - 18% of your 'usual' workforce being unavailable would surely create a big gap. Especially when considering how crucial team work, and familiarity with roles and responsibilities are.

When I worked in Honda for example, we couldn't operate with a far smaller % out, and would simply have to stop production for a day. Even if a tiny fraction of the staff were off sick and production could continue, supervisors etc could step in to cover, though weren't quite as proficient as the people who did the roles all day every day and production slowed.

In my current business, I work as half of a duo as part of a wider team. I know that if I'm tied up doing one thing, my buddy will pull out the stops with the other stuff we need to get done, and vice versa. If one of us is out, we have help to call upon, but it's apples and oranges due to the team ethic and understanding the two of us have built.

Can football be compared to 'mainstream' business? In some respects no - customer loyalty for example is incomparable.

On the other hand, human beings, emotions, knowing you can completely trust the person to the left or right of you to do their role - unequivocally.

Additionally, if we think about a production or sales environment - sometimes we have a rush on, or an extreme week, and really pull one out of the bag. This isn't a sign that people can keep that up every day on an ongoing basis, it's simply not feasible, and can easily result in burnout after a while.

I'm not saying that we smashed Blackburn as a result of players running themselves into the ground (given the opposition errors) thus should be allowed an off day today. That said, all human performance is surely peaks and troughs impacted by anything and everything. And 18% off the workforce out is bound to have a large impact /upset the equilibrium.

Naturally another difference between 'normal' business and football is that in football there is a team in front of you directly trying to stop you achieve your goals, and Huddersfield were playing for their lives, as to be honest, we were expecting blackburn to.

Why am I posing this? I suppose to try to give (and possible foster) a little understanding to the quite different experience for fans over the last two games. Also, no, I'm not Bristol sport 🤣🤣

My word, what an essay. Thank you for reading. Any thoughts welcome. Have another apology (I'm sorry). And a potato 🥔 (those who know, will know).

Cheers all, have a good Saturday night.

    Tom

Not completely sure I agree but certainly an interesting post 👍

Once again a lesson for all those quick to write off that what you see when a player has a bad game isn’t necessarily what you’ll get going forward. These players train full time and there’s every chance they’ll improve.

I guess we should say the same about the Manning too, I’m sure during those dreadful games he wasn’t thinking this is fine, surely he was looking for ways to Improve and this weekend we have.

I’m not saying he the messiah all of a sudden but we’re stuck with him at least until at least Christmas I’d guess, so here’s hoping.

Look I still think it’s quite early to have a pop at Liam but in the interests of balance referring to him as ‘the Manning’ is a touch OTT too? 🤷🏻‍♂️

He's always been good enough. This season a decent screen in front of him is allowing him the space to breath and demonstrate his ability. That helping him post the kind of numbers that make him look like one of the best in the league. It's nuanced but my reading of it is that he's good, but the defence helps him to be really good. Almost as though football is a team game.

My opinion is also that having CBs who are confident on the ball - Dickie in particular - help him with the recycle and the out.

I've always said we don't need to upgrade the goalkeeper to finish in the top 6 and it's great that he's currently demonstrating that.

Football as a team game 🤔. Nah it’s all about individuals who are either complete rubbish or the love child of Pele and Messi.

You personally said you had barely any motivation for todays game and were more excited about a haircut.

Yet at the same time you were expecting us to win? Yep the logic really tracks there.

Totally understand if you’re Manning out but if you aren’t going to consider both sides of the debate and give merits when they are deserved because we were somehow expecting to beat a side 35 points ahead of us, 10x the squad value, what’s the point debating in the first place.

£95m on the bench alone according to Sky 😮

Didn't rate mehmeti atall today, yes he does the hard stuff easy but can he please just do the simple stuff

    Roberts played excellent I thought

What has Mehmeti ever done for us apart from the roads, viaducts, health system oh, and that brilliant finish to win us the game 😉

Before the game it seemed like a lot of people had written it off as another defeat but wanted to see an improved performance. And we got that for the most part.

Nobody's "celebrating" anything, just remarking that it was improved. If we'd produced anything near it in the last 3 games I doubt we'd be having all of these conversations.

    Careful that’s subversively rational 😆

Genuinely not seeing this.  Performances have regressed, players have regressed, results have regressed and league position has regressed.  I see zero signs of any sort of progress.

This is a total myth which has constantly been churned out.

There has been zero signs of any progress in his time here.

    Infact we have got worse.

No signs at all? To start with we kept the ball more which I think was overdue if we were going to progress as a team. Watford away, West Ham, Forest away. Then the Southampton game, 4 games ago, was the best performance by a City team I’ve seen in a good while, regardless of how we played tactically and similarities to NPs. Certainly the most convincing performance against an ex Prem team given our record has been appalling against them in recent times.

Look last few games are concerning, I’m not glossing over the big issues we have. I just don’t think it’s been nothing but decline since he took over 🤷🏻‍♂️.

    I hate to say it…

But shipping the seven at Swansea led to getting rid of Tinnion and the appointment of Johnson, which in turn led to promotion the following season, our highest league finish for a generation and several years at the level above. It lasted about 5 years. So, it depends what you mean by long term and or seismic change. But I’d argue that in the sphere of a football club, a managerial change is fairly seismic and a markedly improved position for at least half a decade is at least medium term success.

Context was a bit different though - Tinnion had a year and a bit of mediocre results. Manning has had 5? Months and had some signs of progress at least, albeit others where we’ve gone backwards.

That said I do remember saying to my wife that I hoped we’d get humiliated once it was clear we were going to lose that Swansea game, as it might force hands. Sure enough…..

Manning has lost the fans and players trust from the outside looking in,

He's continuing to blame his players and not look at his coaching methods

95% of the time it's the system/organisation that's the problem, not the people with in it

This bullshit starts at the top of the club, that needs to change now, no matter what they've done in the past, they've taken the club as far as they can and need to leave,

They lost the trust, once that's gone there is no way back

Lost the players trust? Well that’s not what James thinks in the article:

For all the conspiracy theories about lost dressing rooms and a disenchanted squad, as we understand that is abundantly not true.

edit -Apols previous post says much the same

Not to the same extent. The main rivalry is Plymouth and Exeter. I would place Torquay to them in a similar way that Yeovil used to be for us. Close, but not the main rivals and animosity has never really built up.

Went to an Exeter Torquay game years ago and the home fans response to Torquay was effectively we don’t care enough to hate you! Defo Argyle Exeter over everything.

I agree to an extent Dave, some of this baz-ball is brainless, a mixture of both styles would do me, on another note the Aussies v Windies game last week was fantastic, would love to see the Windies back to their old glories, the ‘70s & 80’s teams were unbelievable

Think we’re forgetting just how bad the England team was pre Bazball….
