  1. Anyone know the last time we had a player in the Championship Team of the Year?
  2. Personally think Conway will soon become our first choice centre forward and Wells won't play enough games to get to 50 goals. Assuming we continue with 4-3-3, of course.
  3. I struggle to square this with our stated aims, though i.e. getting in the playoffs/promotion. Unless we have a young Lionel Messi coming through or, at the very least, a couple of Alex Scotts. Which is highly unlikely. I can't visualise some of our current first teamers playing in a promotion winning team, never mind doing so with promising kids on the bench or getting regular games! Also, injuries this season have exposed the lack of depth in our squad and I can't see how continuing to rely on kids will improve our depth of quality, either. All that said, a pathway is vital. Tis a difficult circle to square, for sure.
  4. Yep but also an example of why Southampton will be relegated. They've lost plenty of experienced, proven Premier League players and replaced them with unproven kids, albeit full of potential. More fool them. Buying a job lot of teenagers from Man City was never going to be the answer for them. Never mind though, eh?!
  5. (cough) Kane Wilson (cough)
  6. From 'Bristol City Football Club - The First 100 Years': " Highly-rated, jovial left-half Peter Chambers played an important role in Bristol City's 1905-06 Second Division title success. After helping Black Diamonds to win the Cumberland League & Cup in his native Workington, he joined Blackburn Rovers in 1897 and moved to Bedminster FC 2 years later. Following the merger in 1900 he starred as Bristol City were Southern League runners-up in 1900-01 and were elected to the Football League. He netted 10 goals in 173 League games before joining Swindon Town and helping them win the Southern League in 1910-11. Subsequently landlord of the Red Lion pub, he remained in Swindon until his death in 1952. " 'Bristol City The Early Years 1894 - 1915' states that 2 weeks before his testimonial match against Chesterfield, an attendance of 18,000 to watch us draw 1-1 at home to Man Utd produced gate receipts of £335. The attendance for the testimonial Chesterfield game was 5,000, so a ball park gate receipt of £100 maybe? Of which Chambers got 50%. Some testimonial. Anyone know what 50 quid got you in 1905?
  7. Perhaps watch the goal again because you're basing your opinion on the exact opposite of what actually happened. O'Leary wasn't "stood on his line watching that happen around him" - Carroll wins the first header, O'Leary comes forward to claim it, doesn't get anywhere near it, ends up in no-mans land, and leaves Joao with a simple looped header into an empty net. Furthermore, Andy Carroll is 6'3". Lucas Joao is 6'3". Our centre backs that day were Vyner and Pring. So that type of goal was an accident waiting to happen on that particular day. And unfortunately it did. But only because injuries had deprived us of all of our tall, aerially strong defenders - Kalas, Atkinson, Naismith- and our only other tall players - Klose and Martin - had been correctly moved on in January. This won't always be the case though. You say these types of goals keep happening, I would say they're in no way indicative of our direction of travel - for 2 reasons: 1) You'd like to think we won't have so many injuries to key players again 2) But if we do, this summer is the first genuine opportunity Pearson will have to build a squad with the necessary depth that can cope with this number of injuries. He's said repeatedly we're light at centre back - give him the chance to do something about it. He's said he wants a big, physically strong team - give him the chance to do something about it. The summer will be his first genuine opportunity to do so. And all that on top of the obvious improvements this season in number of goals conceded, defensive solidity, team cohesion.
  8. Anyone mentioned Reading at home and their equaliser yet? Free kick to the edge of our box is won by Carroll prompting O'Leary to wander off his line into no-man's land, he gets nowhere near claiming it, allowing Joao a simple header into an empty net. Poor. All rather reminiscent of Millwall's winner at our place - free kick to the edge of the box, O'Leary out of his goal but gets nowhere near claiming it, Millwall player presented with a simple tap in into an empty net. Poor. There's a pattern here. It's a No from me but I completely get why other positions are a priority at the moment.
  9. Well that's jinxed that, then! Darn Titter twitter twaatter
  10. As always, depends on what definition of "biggest" we're using. Some will base it on size of crowds (current, potential or historical). Others will base it on success on the pitch (current or historical). There's plenty of scope for disagreement in all that. Personally, I don't consider Luton Town a bigger club than Bristol Rovers - they're obviously a far more successful one though. But that's just my definition. In the 1900s, City were a "big" club - not how we'd describe ourselves now. In the 1930s Huddersfield were massively successful- not so much now. So it's all relative and hugely subjective. Which is a long winded way of saying, I dunno. Although it is one accolade I'm happy for dA gAss to claim. As if the ignominy of being a Non League team as recently as 2015 isn't sufficient!
  11. In my 40+ years of attending Ashton Gate, this was the single most inept and shambolic announcement I've ever heard. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
  12. Thoroughly enjoyed today. We are without Kalas, Atkinson, Scott, Williams, Sykes - all first choice starters. Two more - Conway and Naismith - only played bit parts today. What on earth do people seriously expect?! Our threadbare squad is running on fumes, yet even when the players still find a way to grind out results, it's not good enough for some. Nuts! And what other City manager, stripped of that many first choice starters, has ever got such results and, yes, performances at this level of football?? I can't think of one. Again, nuts isn't it?
  13. Anyone know how many posts that fundamentally disagree with the OP there needs to be, before a thread can be officially declared nonsense?
  14. Really? Plenty of posters on here - who actually know me, unlike you - who'd say the exact opposite actually (If they can be arsed to address such an ignorant comment. Don't bother, lads.) So what the actual **ck were you expecting from today's game?
  15. I am not deflated after that. Next!
  16. So the Taliban represent what Muslims think of women? As someone just said, Christ on a bike.
  17. The medics will know whether Kalas was just unlucky with his latest injury or there's a serious underlying problem. Let's hope it's the former. For sure, Vyner's availability this season has been excellent, absolutely vital when running a small squad that seems to attract more than it's fair share of injuries.
  18. Kalas. Already here and worth every penny - so long as his fitness can be relied upon. And - if it can - assuming he'd agree a new contract. A few ifs and buts in there, for sure. Or how about the 6'4", ball playing lad from Palace reserves we're interested in? Probably Vyner's equal on the ball and much taller. Think extending his contract is just the club protecting their position while they explore other options. Vyner's played well this season but I'm struggling in my mind's eye to see him in a consistently top 6ish City side. Assuming that's Nige's minimum goal. You never know though, I guess.
  19. Mine too, Scott aside. Get the feeling he plays through injuries when not 100% fit too, just because he's so important to the side. Great attitude. We're lucky to have him and King guiding the young uns.
  20. I'd recommend visiting Het Waterhuis aan de Bierkant. A cracking pub. @GrahamC fell off his barstool in there during an evening drinking ridiculously strong beer. I somehow survived but did sleep for about a week when we got home.
  21. Yep, people fretting when actually this is just what we want - competition for places.
  22. Guess I retain 100% faith in the manager. At least until he's been given the chance to build his own team - which will probably require the sale of Scott but that's life. Other than that, I'm not sure what you expected from this set of players this season.
  23. Top half of the middle 8. But Conway will get better, Pring will get better, Tanner will get better, pray god Atkinson will get better (pray god his knee does) Scott will get better (yes I know, I know), Sykes will get better, Mehmeti will get better, Bell will get better, Kane Wilson might turn out to be Carlos Alberto re-incarnated ? and Kalas will get fit or a centre half of Pearson's choosing will replace him, ie a gurt big un (what input has Pearson had on any of our defensive signings so far?? precious little, I think). And if Scott leaves, there's money to spend. Cheer up!
